You know that Brown has increased his assists almost every single season right? - The only exception was 2018-19 where he started the season injured and got benched and played fewer minutes as a result. That is incredibly rare, and there’s like only 2 other guys who can say the same (and 1 of them is Jayson Tatum).

You also know that Boston has had years of pretty playmaking, right? - There are better individual playmakers in the league (eg. LeBron, Jokic, etc) but the 2000s Spurs, the 2010s Warriors and the 2020s Celtics are the 3 championship teams with the best team-wide ball movement this century.

Like in that terrible 2018-19 season where everyone else was either pointing fingers or burying their heads in the sand, 22-year-old Jaylen Brown was the only guy who stood up and said “It’s not one guy’s fault. It’s not the young guys’ or the old guys’ fault — it’s everybody’s fault. We all got to be accountable and turn this thing around.”

I hate to be the guy who brings race into it, but at a certain point there isn’t really another reason that Brown gets so much criticism for being selfish. He’s black and he’s outspoken, and that has so many people scrounging for excuses to criticise him.

1. Celtics fans that accuse these guys of being selfish and only looking for their own shot

2. Celtics fans that accuse these guys of being soft and not just blindly charging into the paint

It would be a circle.

It doesn’t make sense at all. You want them to pass the ball to the open man, but you don’t want them to pass the ball to the open man because he might shoot a 3.

Mazzula-ball is entirely built around Tatum/Brown collapsing the defence and then passing to the open man, who will then make a snap decision to shoot/pass/drive. In the modern NBA, the open man is often standing on the 3PT line.

The reason the ball doesn’t fly around as much anymore is because we don’t have Holiday or Porzingis in the corner making the secondary play, we’ve got debutants still learning the fundamentals.

I’m with you on playing unselfishly, but a Celtic could win the scoring title while playing Celtics basketball. Some have come close. JB this year obvs, then IT was 3rd in the ‘16-17 season, Bird was 2nd in ‘84-85 and 3rd in ‘87-88. They were good enough to get the scoring title, and if one or 2 other guys ahead of them weren’t as good those seasons, they would have.
