I was quite high relative to the average, and still was hoping for 50-55 wins with a 4th to 6th seed, before the season started.

A tough second-round exit was my satisfying expectation for development.

Anything above that was a bonus to me.

Obviously expectations changed by the end of 2025, and even more so by the ASG, in regards to regular-season seeding, but I was still on a “2nd round exit minimum, even though we could get to the finals and perhaps win it” as our floor vs ceiling.

I thought Wemby could develop a more consistent offensive game and get to 27-28 PPG to become the youngest MVP ever, though. I was too high here.

But his small injuries and minutes restrictions lowered his overall stats.

They’re talking preseason. Even one of the Spurs starters themselves (blanking out on who, though) admitted during their Western Conference game 7 postgame interview that their goal this year was to simply make the playoffs. 22-60, 22-60, 34-48 regular season totals in the 3 years prior. So to go from that to being in the Finals has exceeded everyone’s wildest expectations.

Heck, I was absolutely thrilled they made it to the 2nd round. Was just happy to see us win a playoff round for the first time in forever. Still feels incredibly surreal we are in the Finals after being 22-60 just 2 years ago and still not even having close to a winning record last season.

Victor’s injury last year essentially tossed us out of the playoffs where we were still in the hunt when he got injured. I expect that if he didn’t get injured, they give Fox rest here and there and not shut him down entirely. We make the playoffs and probably get that playoff experience last year.

I think the injuries made all the outsiders underestimate how good we really became after we got Fox cuz we never actually got to see that. I think the team itself however knew they were ready this year before and it took us a long time to started believing.

Even for right before the postseason, there were a lot of arguments against the Spurs, first of which is the experience bit, we just never see a team go in and win. Usually we see them lose first before they come back next year, the experience takes them out. New environment, new schemes to go against, players still developing, and then the stress/anxiety causing players to miss the shots they normally make. That alone makes it crazy that a team like this made it here, over OKC of all teams and not like a mickey mouse run. Health and minutes going up was another, especially Wemby having to play 40 not 30 which is a big jump.

I think I would have predicted a Nuggets win over the Spurs in the 2nd round given how good Denver looked at the end

In *this* case, the season series does give a different picture than reality because we lost the Cup final due to poor rebounding (something we’ve fixed since) and then we did beat the Knicks in our final season matchup.

It’s too even to call really, but I do think that the Spurs team has grown a lot since we last saw each other, and especially since we lost the Cup Final.

Plus, I’m pretty sure Vic has his *primary* motivation here. Dude is full of angst and a revenge mindset which he’s proven he can channel like all the other greats in the past.

Teams pour everything into that series and come out drained for the next round. ‘21 Suns were the closest to breaking it, took them all the way to the Finals. Theres a unique story for a few of these, though others I think the outcome was set either way

19-20 Bubble year. Celtics led in every 4th but blew it 4x, kicking off the series by getting outscored by 15 in 4th/OT and never recovering since. They were the best suited to advance, though home/road dynamics were funky this year

Suns and Celtics 2nd time I dont think there was anything special here. Both still made it to the finals

Suns dropping 4 straight is noteworthy, though you cant even say Booker was gassed either, he had 40 in games 4 and 5. Before Giannis responded with a 50 piece. And the Celtics were in their 2nd year, I think the Warriors just had the veteran experience, coaching, and had been there enough times that it wouldnt have mattered

Next years Warriors are an interesting case here in that they might have been the ones to expend all their energy to take out the upstart Kings in game 7. But I think the punch situation put a ceiling on what they could be capable of. Lakers got swept by the Nuggets cuz they werent in their league, and Malone really hated the fckin lakers

Maybe you can make the argument the Wolves were tired but this was also their 1st series win in 20 years. Its extremely rare to go the entire distance in your first treck to the dance since some of these guys were in diapers

Knicks might have just been outclassed as well, they actually dispatched of the Celtics rather handily in 6 games. Pascal Siakam had a series to remember, I think that had a bigger role than the Knicks being worn out
