Oh yeah that’s one of my favorite sci-fi movies. Love del Toro. Honestly I also love old movies. The transfer is incredible when they rescan film. I’ll be watching an old Hitchcock movie and you can see the fabric weave, it’s like as if you were in a big theater right when it came out. The 80s especially look great. Check out The Thing and the first Terminator.

If you want a straight answer, for the majority of people, it likely won’t make a HUGE difference. Its more of if you can spot the differences, you will never be able to unsee them.

Streaming has such a lower bitrate compared to the raw 4k disc file that you are always going to be watching and listening to the over compressed version of the movie.

The biggest differences I have found were in 2 big areas.

Color banding in general and especially in dark scenes. Contrast is killed by lower bitrates and in turn you get terrible banding where you cannot tell what is what in dark scenes.
Audio. Audio gets hit harder than the visuals imo, especially if you have a dedicated home theater setup woth an AVR and dedicated speakers. On a 4k bluray the bass rips deeper and the audio (especially dialogue) is crisper.

A lot of home theater stuff took some time researching and getting used to but it has been a godsend for me personally.

Also owning your movies physically and looking at them on a shelf just brings back an old feeling to the experience.

In Canada, Raptors games are broadcast in 4K (even away games). The bitrate is around 21 MBPS so it’s not just 4K in name only, it’s actually quite good.

The NextGen TV standard (ATSC 3.0) allows for higher resolution HDTV, and has already been available for a few years in various markets, but it’s had a slow uptake for various reasons, and is often just an upscale of stations’ regular HDTV broadcast, even though it’s fully capable of higher resolutions.

YouTube channels like AntennaMan and Lon TV have been doing a good job covering the various issues, like broadcasters wanting to force DRM encryption on the channels to control the recording capabilities, the encryption requiring an Internet connection (for an OTA TV broadcast!), and certain home tuner devices currently being handicapped in their capabilities because of all of this.

True but other networks and leagues can broadcast games in 4K occasionally, even if some of it is 1080p from the camera and upscaled.

For the biggest event of the year in the NBA, it’s an embarrassment to broadcast in 720p. The Super Bowl and the CFB final were broadcast in 4K. Even if it is 7 games vs. 1, there is little to no excuse to offer such low quality.

Also plenty of, if not all, streaming services offer 4K for recorded content. I’m guessing it’s just cheapness on the broadcast end to upgrade their cameras and production pipeline.

This is definitely one area where you guys could learn from us: your broadcast TV system. Seriously, watching TV in the US feels like stepping back in time for a Western European. Everything about the broadcasting style feels so outdated…

And it gets even worse when you look at soccer (while the NBA will stops we will all enjoy the coming world cup in your country). From the overall picture quality to the camera angles, the difference is night and day. In Europe, the camera operators and directors understand the rhythm of the game. They use wider, better-positioned angles that let you see the tactical shape of the match, rather than just zooming in on whoever has the ball. Plus, the US broadcasts are incredibly cluttered. Between the poorly timed replays that cause you to miss live counter-attacks, the massive on-screen graphics, and squeezing in commercials while the ball is actually in play, it completely ruins the flow of the game.

It depends

Part of the dynamic to be fair is that the nfl/cfb is the better comparison here - and a lot of those broadcasts can be really impressive. NBA is just lower on the totem pole, and soccer is way lower (the same way EPL packaging doesn’t compare to lower leagues or less popular European leagues)

Production choices (like graphics and replays) are highly case by case and dependent on who is producing. And rather than one partner you have many who are doing smaller subsets of games.

Production quality (like resolution) has other considerations - balancing the top of the line experience with the tradeoffs for people still viewing over cable or on lower bandwidth streaming. ABC has been slow to improve compared to others - not sure exactly why.

An opinion from someone working in the industry, one of the reasons for the continued use of 720p broadcasts is because of the sheer amount of different trucks for different teams. A 1080p show would require replacing nearly all of the equipment inside and out of the truck, replacing cameras as well as their connector cables and all of the encoding/routing that would handle 3G-12G+ signals.

Even the games on NBC and Prime are 1080, which is upscaled to 4K if you’re on the streaming services (cable nbc vs. peacock).

A majority of viewers particularly for NFL are watching on tv or another medium receiving local antenna networks. Currently there’s not a big push to go all in on 1080 and definitely not 4K over satellite/cable.

So yeah, a lot of snarky comments regarding “welcome to the 20th century” but

There’s not a big difference between 1080 and upcaled 4k on streaming for sports games
And 2. Many production trucks are run independently from networks and would require their own spending to upgrade all of their equipment, unless they were a proprietary truck or a broadcast run from inside of the arena.

The ATSC 1.0 spec doesn’t allow for 1080p60, the two best options networks have are 720p60 or 1080i60 until ATSC 3.0 makes it off the ground, if it ever does

It will certainly continue to be 720p over-the-air for regular ATSC 1.0 HDTV broadcasts. Whether ABC stations that also have a NextGen (ATSC 3.0) broadcast will show the higher resolution, who knows?

I don’t even care about the resolution, although that’s good news. My local ABC channel always broadcasts sporting events at like 12 frames per second. I know it’s not my equipment because every other channel is normal. On the nights where ABC and ESPN show the same game you can flip back and forth and it’s 2 entirely different feeds where the ABC one is obviously not set up right. Hoping this means an end to that?

… It’s been broadcast over the air in 1080 since 2009? And many stations now broadcast in even higher quality. You just need an antenna
