[Vorkunov] The Dallas Mavericks say they’ve “entered into option agreements for the potential purchase of approximately 104 acres at the former Valley View Mall site.” Looks like there are no longer plans to build an arena on the site of City Hall.
This is a terrible location. There is nothing wrong with American Airlines, I hate our owners.
I also hate your owners
Its an older arena by todays standards and the lease is up in 5 years. I was convinced they were trying to move the team until the expansion LV was announced. So now it looks like they are picking an area where its cheaper to build a new stadium, rather than renovate AA and extend their lease.
It doesn’t need renovations…
Yeah, I’ve been a couple of times over the last two years as a stopover to see a Celtics game on my way to Vegas. I quite like AAC and thought it was in an extremely convenient, walkable location and right next to the light rail station.
It’s like how the Tampa Rays are going to put their new stadium way up on Dale Mabry in the middle of suburban hell instead of in Ybor. St. Pete (where it is now) is out of the way, but at least it’s in a downtown walkable area.
Obligatory fuck the Trop!
According the leagues bylaws the commissioner can require it. Multiple were forced to renovate recently to conform with emerging league standards.
It literally leaks on the floor every time it rains
The camera shot of Cuban seething while they mopped up the floor during a storm pretty much guaranteed they weren’t going to renew with AAC
you’re fucking kidding how did that happen
idk it just does lmao
as someone who uses to work there and was down below the stadium all the time, in the tunnels…yea, it absolutely does need renovations to be a sports team in 2026 or at least nba. its cramped, wildly cramped. you can tell the age below…like, guess who else is in the arena?? workers. the break room their sucks ass, there’s no employee amenities, lack of efficiency, the warehouse is small as shit, even the team stores are small as shit.
Like Mark Cuban said… ownership is no longer about basketball, its about real estate. They need to find a place they can build, and own all the surrounding land to build shopping and expensive hotels and casinos.
But gambling isn’t legal in Texas…… Yet
one thing that slimeball is good for is resisting the gambling overlords
Waiting for the big payout before he retires and starts his career in the special Olympics playing wheelchair basketball.
Sir, this isn’t gambling it’s polymarket routlette
I think renovating it would probably be the best option, but they want to own the whole surrounding entertainment area which isn’t going to be possible with Victory Park.
I was convinced they were trying to move the team until the expansion LV was announced.
So you were a dumb Luka conspiracy theorist. Glad you woke up.
American Airlines delayed my last flight for like six hours. Pretty frustrating.
Not for me, I hope this goes through I own a house right around there lol
The problem with American Airlines is there isn’t a casino there.
Lakers fans/owners love your owners
What’s so bad about that location?
The new location has only buses as public transit options unlike the current AAC which has rail station right across the street with one of the trains having a connection from Fort Worth. That and it’s right next to neighborhoods and next to an already super congested highway and it’s also even further north of the metro. It pretty much complicates the commute to see the mavs much more for a good chunk of the area.
The AAC is right next to downtown and is walking distance to hotels and restaurants; this old mall site isn’t really next to anything (it’s a dead former mall)
I’m surprised more dead masks aren’t repurposed into novelty projects. Go Karting thought a mask would be fire.
The biggest killer of malls is energy costs.
Immediately a bottom 5 location in the league. Just completely unserious
They would have to put a lot into the infrastructure around an arena in that location. It’s really not a great area of the city.
That’s what the casino lobbying is for
Believe it or not, a lot of the Republicans in this state hate casinos.
I’m actually shocked and impressed that the Adelson’s, with all their money, have hit such a stonewall with the casino.
Dan Patrick is one stubborn son of a bitch. He refuses to allow any votes to occur on casinos.
Hot wheels ain’t the biggest fan of casinos either
Probably the one thing I agree with Dan on
Yea, people commenting here don’t know Texas state politics.
The Lt Governor of Texas is absurdly powerful (compared to other state Lt Govs), as that position has control over the legislative agenda, basically being equivalent to a Senate Majority Leader.
Dan Patrick personally doesn’t want gambling in the state, and he has not budged on it despite lobbying from VIP Republican donors like the Adelsons.
I don’t doubt Patrick’s position but he’s 76 and won’t be Lt. Gov. forever.
People like the Adelsons don’t operate on 4 year timeframes.
Abbott and friends may be scummy, but they have hard stances on a select few things where money won’t influence them. And gambling is one of them. Ironically the only way gambling probably makes it into the state is if a Democrat becomes governor.
I thought the natives in Oklahoma give them gobs of money to keep casinos out of Texas.
Should be soon then.
Never trust a republican. Gambling will be legalized in Texas definitely
It’s not about trusting a republican, it’s about the history Texas has had regarding this, the anti gambling stance isn’t off a whim they’ve been against it for a very long time. They’ve really spent a lot to keep gambling out of Texas, even going after small time gas stations running 1 or 2 game machines. The Adelsons aren’t the first to try to get casinos into Texas and if they stay in power, they won’t be the last either.
Yeah I have a sense of the history but Republicans have no spine and negative morals. You’ll see them fold, it’ll just take them a couple of years
Gambling really hasn’t been a partisan thing to date.
Lack of morals and corruption isn’t partisan either. It’s just that one side is the LeBron James of corruption and the other side is like a 6MOTY tier player
? I’ve seen tons of gas stations and various similar shops with 1-3 gambling machines
They just need their cut
Their Christian views are even more hardcore than other areas of the country. Real hardliners.
That just means they haven’t been offered enough money yet. If there’s one thing you can rely on it’s Texas republican corruption
In the first Trump term, the Texas state legislature put forth a bill to legalize marijuana in the state. It had 70% approval in the state house and the state senate and Dan Patrick refused to allow the bill to the floor to be voted on. Abbott and Patrick are committed to not allowing casinos in the state.
Don’t forget it’s not just casinos, it’s the sports betting too, fan duel and the like are currently banned in Texas and hopefully for them it stays that way.
But of course Kalshi and polymarket are totally legal because Trump is involved
Brings in a lot of crime and riff raff. They won’t bring it into the cities, maybe on the outskirts like Corsicana or something.
Colorado does a great job at this. All of the casinos are in the mountains away from the city.
Brings in a lot of crime and riff raff.
Does it though? MGM was built in the DC metro with no increase in crime at all. Violent crime has continued to trend down. Here’s a pretty significant study of crime rates following Rivers Casino opening in Philly. It found no material increase in crime.
I don’t like Casinos much. I grew up in Oklahoma and they were everywhere. That said, I like online gambling a heck of a lot less than physical casinos. Losing your life savings while gambling in a casino is a lot harder than doing so while in your underwear at home.
Maybe I am just judgmental but I have been to Vegas a couple times and the Colorado casinos several times and it seems to bring a certain kind of demographic but I could definitely be wrong.
I am definitely with you on the online gambling. I think they should outlaw it or severely limit it. At least outlaw the advertising of it.
it seems to bring a certain kind of demographic
Why be so vague? Sounds like you’re just beating around the bush.
I said riff raff so people who dress and act like they might commit crime? I think you can use your imagination instead of trying to race bait me or whatever your plan was here
I’ve lived in the Springs for 14 years and I’ve still never gone out to Cripple Creek because of how out of the way it is.
it’s really not a great area of the city
It’s Dallas, how can you tell?
You joke but the area AAC is in wasn’t the safest through the 90s. The area has come a long way and there isnt much reason to move, other than owner profits
Shit, I started finally warming up to Victory Park during these last few seasons and here they go ruining that
I went to a game when i was in town last year and thought it was a great arena…
They’re talking about the area it’s in, not the arena itself.
I was more expanding on the “there isn’t much reason to move” bit. I had no idea they were looking at building a new arena, seemed totally nice (aside from the dire basketball I watched that day between the mavs and dumpster fire sixers).
I just can’t see how that site would accommodate an area. Traffic off 635 is already dogshit and while there are major roads around there, they aren’t equipped for this sort of traffic
Not to mention 0 dart rail stops
The lack of Dart is the sad part. 635 alone handles ~12,000 cars an hour. I don’t think increased vehicle traffic will be that big of a deal.
635 hardly handles it well lmao. It’s always a mess and adding lanes wont do anything, even though they keep trying
Fact: 90% of city planners give up when they’re just one more lane away from finally fixing the traffic problems
Just one more lane bro trust me it will surely fix it.
I mean 635 is actively under construction.
It’s been actively under construction for decades
West of 75 is not under construction which is where Valley View is at, and east of 75 is getting close to finishing.
“east of 75 is getting close to finishing.”
I’ve been hearing that for years
The scheduled time for it to finish was 2026 so don’t know what you’ve been hearing about for years
It’s near Preston Hollow and Addison. All there would need to do is buy all the commercial property up through belt line.
What commercial property? 90% of the real estate between Alpha and Belt Line is residential. To the west you have the Galleria which is still going strong and a 3.5 billion mixed use development already underway. To the east is more residential and the oldest country club in Dallas.
What are you talking about? It’s surrounded by the highest income area in the entire metroplex, probably the state. Yes the actual mall is run down as it’s been abandoned for over a decade, but a stadium will reinvigorate it. Also this puts it pretty close to the Plano/frisco/prosper pocket of high net worth and corporate locations. Plus it’s got convenient highway access to much of the metroplex.
Honestly I think it’s a great spot.
Not having train access when traffic on 635 is already terrible is going to be a nightmare. It’s better than leaving Dallas entirely but I don’t think people were that worried about whether it’s near a bunch of corporate locations.
I don’t think being near a metro line is that big of a draw. All the homeless people ruin the metro for people that can actually afford to go to a game. They are crazy, smell can be violent and are generally diseased
The draw isn’t the train, it’s watching the basketball game or concert or whatever. Having trains reduces traffic even for people who want to drive. Tons of people would park in like Plano, take the train down because it brought you right to the arena, and take it back. You don’t have to pay for parking, there are fewer cars on the road so there’s less traffic for the people who do drive, and people who want to get a little drunk at the game can do that instead of having to drive immediately after so you’re probably going to have fewer accidents on the way out that would make traffic even worse.
I get it, bro. I wouldn’t disagree with any of that. Homeless people still fuck it up for everyone else. You absolutely can take the train to keep safe from a DUI but you would be replacing it with the risk the unhoused people on the train bring.
spoken like a true suburb enthusiast who never leaves frisco
Another option for the Bears
Arlington Bears or Gary Bears. Tough times for Chicago fans.
But funny.
Jerruh is about to shut down Reddit for you even suggesting this
The spurs tried pulling this same kinda dumb shit and are now moving back to the city center. Billionaires always think they’re the smartest guys in the room
When you play so many games you need people that go to games often and make it easy. Do you wanna go to the game should be talked about at lunch and done
Where’s their new arena gonna be? Are they going to tear down the Alamodome?
https://sanantonio.culturemap.com/news/city-life/props-a-b-election-results/
Interesting. So it’ll be next to the Alamodome. Been awhile since I’ve been to San Antonio, but there was a weird stretch where I was there like 4-5 times in the span of a year for random job/convention/family/friend events.
Hope you had a good time!
It was great. Got to see a bunch of stuff around town and ate a churro.
Yeah they’re building a multi phase project with a revamp of the Alamodome, land bridge over 281, new arena, parks, hotels, etc.
It got a lot of criticism but the voters passed it and I’m glad.
Ultimately, San Antonio wouldn’t be where it is now without Spurs basketball and the national attention it brings to the city.
For real, it’s such a tired move. They always try to leverage some suburban land grab for tax breaks and then act shocked when fans don’t want to drive an hour through traffic. Glad Dallas seems to be catching on
I mean, not really. The new arena is closer to where most people in the metroplex actually live and the city was bending over backwards trying to get the mavs to build where city hall currently is
Suburban arenas are just lame
It’s Dallas. No one cares about the city center. Everyone will drive in anyways like they already do
didn’t the Wizards owner try to do what same thing? Or maybe it was a way to get taxpayers to pay for something.
Announced a deal to move to Alexandria but then got the deal he always wanted to stay in DC and renovate Cap One.
To be fair San Antonio had no downtown arena that was usable and the Spurs played in the Alamodome which is a football stadium.
what are they gonna do about Nowitzki Way? feels like another slap in the face to their franchise legend tbh after trading Luka
They’ll name a new street after a harder working player. Shaq Circle.
OJ Mayo Avenue
Raymond Felton Boulevard
DeSagana Diop Drive.
That seems like a suboptimal reason to stay at a location…
Honestly at this point they’re speedrunning the “how to alienate your entire fanbase” challenge. Dirk probably wakes up every morning wondering what kind of chaos Nico is gonna cause next.
This is the opposite of what most teams are doing
Terrible location but I guess at least it’s in Dallas and not in like frisco or some shit
Can’t wait to see downtown shots from 10 miles away, while getting the new arena in the picture
No they’ll do like they do for the Cowboys. Just show downtown and say about 15 miles away from where we are
My favorite is when the Sharks and Niners are playing and they show the fucking Golden Gate Bridge and cable cars as if they’re not like an hour away.
Proud home of FC Dallas
A small win but I’m tired of everything moving to the Plano area or surrounding area of Plano/Frisco.
Casinos need lots of square footage for venues, restaurants, hotels, parking, gaming, etc. Having it next to arena is gross.
This is the goal and it sucks.
I know Mark Cuban goes to sleep feeling guilty and ashamed each and every single day. Him selling the team caused such a massive turn of NBA events, and all of those can be pinpointed to the moment to decide he was selling the team. Even worse, he lied and said he would stay on to oversee basketball ops. HAHA
Or he voluntarily sold the controlling interest in the franchise, made a shitload of cash (even by his standards), but doesn’t like the current direction of the franchise as a large, albeit minority interest ownership holder
But do you man
The only thing that idiot has regret over is selling the team so cheap. He left more than a few billion on the table but that’s pretty normal for Cuban.
LOL you’re being way too generous with Cuban it’s almost a fanfic
The city hall plan made no sense, that would be a small arena.
How stupid. Being in the city center is massively beneficial.
If you live in Dallas you know how awful the traffic is in this area. These owners continue to suck
Hope for Mavericks fans the arena is bigger. I HATE this modern NBA trend of making the new arenas smaller with much fewer seats.
OCP Headquarters lives to see another day!
635 will somehow be worse.
OCP headquarters is safe!
And so it begins.
I grew up going to valley view mall all the time as a kid. So this is a fire pick for me. My favorite mall growing up
but I was told the Luka trade was just the first step into moving the team to Vegas. Funny how that didn’t happen
honestly this is probably the smartest thing the mavs have done in months
keeping the team in dallas while building a modern arena/entertainment district feels way more realistic than some of the earlier ideas people were worried about
I’m really not sure why the Reddit hive mind hates this location so much. Maybe because it’s more convenient for cars? Really is remarkable to see the downvotes come in waves for a dissenting opinion
Is it more convient? Having a train line next to the stadium is more convient for cars. Now everyone is going to have to park at the game vs a good % taking the train or walking to the game from Downtown.
They must think getting to and leaving a rangers/cowboys game is a joyous experience
There is no way they’re doing this for any other reason except for control of the surrounding land. How does it service people to move a stadium out of the dense downtown with hotels, walkability and restaurants and every DART line connection in the city and move it to 635 and DNT?
“Reddit hive mind” ie every Dallas resident who actually knows the location and why it is going to be a nightmare compared to basically the only place in Texas with a train stop.
If you’re curious why the area sucks, actually read comments from people who know it.
