[Josh Lewenberg] Rowan Barrett was asked about Jamal Murray, who’s absent from Canada’s player pool for this cycle. “No, Jamal Murray has not committed to playing moving forward.”
Josh Lewenberg:
The 23-player pool that Canada Basketball has to draw from for this summer’s qualifiers includes Gilgeous-Alexander, Alexander-Walker, Barrett, Brooks, Mathurin, Dort, Nembhard bros, Kyshawn George, Miller, Olynyk, Birch. Edey is still recovering from injury but will be in camp
Dwight Powell will also be involved but won’t play. AJ Lawson, Dalano Banton, Caleb Houstan, OMax Prosper also made the commitment but weren’t selected.
Not on the list, notably: Jamal Murray, Andrew Wiggins.
Those that didn’t commit this summer won’t be eligible for the cycle.
Barrett was asked specifically about Jamal Murray, who’s absent from Canada’s player pool for this cycle. “No, Jamal Murray has not committed to playing moving forward.” Notes that Murray has been part of the program since he was a teenager but things come up that impact a player’s availability.
Jama Mahlalela, Nathaniel Mitchell and Hanno Möttölä will be the assistants on Gordie Herbert’s coaching staff.
Shaedon Sharpe is the other notable name missing from Canada’s player pool for this Olympic cycle. Also wouldn’t/couldn’t commit. Surprised by this one. He was around the program/in camp as an observer last cycle, plan was to groom him for this one.
To sum up
NBAers in for Canada this summer: SGA, NAW, Barrett, Brooks, Dort, Nembhard bros, Mathurin, Olynyk, George, Miller
Out this summer but in for this cycle: Edey, Powell
Didn’t commit: Murray, Sharpe, Wiggins
