Honestly the spurs starting rotation were just better than the thunder this series and the thunder bench was much better than the spurs bench mostly. Why we ended up with those results in +/-

I don’t understand why they kept trying to play the same starting lineup with Dort/Chet/Hartenstein when it clearly wasn’t working by like game 4. The Spurs jumped out to huge leads at the start of like every game

+/- is one of those stats that needs a huge sample size and would drive me nuts if I were a player.

Oh, I came off the bench for 3 minutes and Steph got hot and hit five 3s in a row, and now my +/- is wrecked for a month.

Why do people like on off numbers like this? Wemby could play like curry mixed with Hakeem and be the best player on the court but if his teammates aren’t making shots he could be a -20 on the game. It’s such a heavily flawed stat

Here’s the usual Thunder starting lineup that SGA played a lot with in this series:

Hartenstein, Chet, Dort and Cason.

Hartenstein is a solid player all around, but he’s not going to impact heavily, especially on the offensive end.

Dort is an offensive black hole.

Chet arguably just had the worst stretch of play in his career. Being negated a bit by Wemby is one thing, but giving them nothing at all at times was killer and inexcusable.

It doesn’t matter how good of a defense those 5 play, they still have to score offensively and if it wasn’t SGA it had to fall on Cason. This is why we’d see the Spurs go on runs when starters were matched, SGA being doubled and hounded often meant Cason was their only real offensive option.

The Spurs big 3 (4?) driving play are Wemby, Fox and Castle or Harper. The Thunder is SGA, J-Dub and Chet. Thunder didn’t have J-Dub and Chet was awful.

I think people this year have forgotten how important J-Dub is to the Thunder. They can win games without him, but they need their #2 guy healthy and regularly playing to win it all. When it comes to roster moves (not health or Chet needing to really work hard this offseason), the Thunder need to move on from Dort and retool their lineups a little.

Important to note that the okc bench was just better and spurs starters were focusing shai hard. So shai was getting double teamed whenever he is in the floor and when he is resting it’s usually okc bench vs spurs bench which okc wins.

Also he played the most minutes this series so anytime he was off the floor the time was so insignificant that is hard to draw meaningful conclusions.

All this from someone that fucking hates SGA which is why it’s important for me to hate with accuracy. Gotta look at the whole picture.

It goes against conventional NBA wisdom to call Wemby the best player in the world. To be the best player in the world you need to put up monster individual stats. It’s always been that way. But why? Shouldn’t impact matter more than stats?

That shows how well the Spurs defended SGA.

Their role players just never make mistakes and somehow always capitalize off the opponent mistakes. They’re really well coached and rarely beat themselves. Just constantly creating advantages, doing all the small things right, and all of it adds up. Just a masterclass in coaching and team building.

Series is already over. I think Shai and the Thunder already got the message that everybody hates their style of play, no need for more slander.

This alone settles the MVP debate and it’s not close. 

That’s why the entire “SGA carried an injured OKC team” argument is severely limited.

They were BETTER without SGA on the court. Over and over they came back in games, built or extended leads in non SGA minutes.

At a mimimim, regardless of your opinion of SGA, I think we should all be able to agree that if the “MVP” is this ineffective on average when it matters, there’s probably a flaw in how the league determines who gets the award. SGA is a top 10-15 player, but he isn’t close to the best in the world and he was never truly the most “valuable” player in the league. He’s a system product - a NBA version of Kirk Cousins or Keenum, just with a higher ceiling
