[Highlight] Wembanyama hits an “Attack on Titan” celly after advancing to the NBA Finals
He definitely watched attack on wemby stuff
We have the power of god and anime on our side
HAAAAAAAAAAAA
Excuse you. Brunson used to try Aura farming as a Super Saiyan in the shower as a teen AND we have the Pope.
And the Spurs have the nuns. I guess its a great schism all over again.
By Bolter and Blade, the Heretics will fall. The Emperor protects.
Unleash the Adepta Sororitas!
Is the pope not a Bulls fan?
He went to the same college as half our team.
It’s treason then
Churros, anime, and Shaolin monks
God, anime, onlyfans models, and a corgi vs. danhausen, timothy chalamet, spike lee and the baklava guy
Excuse you we have god on our side
maybe, but he said he was an AoT fan since a while and it’s his favourite manga/anime
This just means he’s 100% seen it
yes but the action he’s doing doesn’t come from it that’s what I meant, he was doing it before
Ik lol I meant if he was doing it before, then he def had that shit pop up in the algorithm haha we on same page
Anime / manga / otaku culture is big in France. They’re one of the biggest cosplayers outside of Japan IIRC.
I remember once while riding the train in Paris, 2 schoolkids were reading Bleach. I gave them a thumbs up and they smiled lol
I call them Ouieebs
OuiOuieeb
Eren Victor, as long as you’re part of my life, I can fight to the bitter end.
First AI slop I’ve had to give recognition 🥀
I had to look it up and bruh i’m crying
Was it the one where the ref tells SGA he has his back? I randomly saw it yday and it cracked me tf up lmao.
That and the Jaylin Williams as the smiling Cart titan was perfect
here’s the video for those that haven’t seen it
sometimes i remember wemby a dude in his early 20s who grew up watching the same shit i did
I’m not from France but from what I’ve heard, anime is big there.
It is. The three biggest markets for manga/anime outside of Japan are China, US, and France. (Yes, France has higher consumption of manga/anime than the rest of the EU combined).
I would’ve thought Mexico is up there but maybe they’re just huge Dragonball fans.
They probably don’t have a ton of translations.
Most likely is that they pirate everything.( all Latin America does)
As always is always a problem with distribution and pricing, you can’t expect a kid to ask their family a sub to many different platform that is equivalent to sometimes entire weeks of pay.
They do on pirate sites.
I think thats Brazil
Not much of a surprise given those two countries have probably the biggest and most diverse immigrant populations in the world
Frenchman here. We also have a huge French comic culture, not even just anime/mangas/cinema.
A few widely known comics/cartoons are French, or French-speaking (Belgian, and others):
Asterix, Tintin, Smurfs, Lucky Luke, Valerian.
Also Moebius/Jean Giraud (one of the pioneers of Sci-Fi comics starting in the 60’s): He made Arzach, Incals, Blueberry. Work that has inspired some the most famous mangakas, drawers, writers, and cinematographers in the world.
There’s also a lot of mutual respect and special treatment with Japan, up to government level.
Has been this way for decades now.
Japan and France really have worked together to get a special relationship.
Lots of Japanese people are fascinated by France, and vice versa.
And the Japanese ambassador in France is cool as hell, ahah.
Didn’t think I’d see a Moebius shout on /r/nba. Pleasantly surprised haha.
My dad put me on Tintin comics as a kid, I loved them!
Maybe a bit irrelevant, but France and Japan are also the kings of gastronomy and fine dining. There is also a lot of overlap and influence between the two cuisines in recent years, with lots of amazing French/Japanese fusion restaurants in both countries and even outside of them.
A fun fact is that the artistic crossover goes back way before that - Impressionism was strongly inspired by Japanese art and woodblocking. Art nouveau, Moebius, and Anime all share roots.
I have Incals sitting on my desk right now!
I thought Brazil would be higher because they have the highest Japanese population outside of Japan.
yeah but that’s still only like 2 million people
Until last year, France was the biggest market outside Japan.
Which is funny because I hear Fist of the North Star is huge in Italy. Prime Minister Meloni has an official commission from the artist.
I heard Italy in general has a really strong culture for anime, especially from the 80’s.
That’s a mark against them
I wanna get into it, what is the best place to start?
France was the 2nd largest consumer of manga / anime after japan, which is crazy given their small population compared to biggest countries like the US or China. They were also the earliest country in the west to sell and popularize japanese comics, and broadcast anime. Mangas were literally as big in the 80s/90s in France as they are in the rest of the world now.
I don’t think they’re still n°2 now since anime exploded in the rest of the world, especially the US and China, so obviously a small country with 65M pop can’t consume more. It’s still impressive compared to the rest of europe though.
Also a fun fact : before the manga wave, it was american comics that were just as popular in france, but from the late 80s / 90s they just got completely killed by japanese mangas. It’s literally the same phenomenon that’s happening in the US now, but 50 years earlier lol.
Ironically, mangas are now slowly getting replaced by korean manhwas and chinese manhuas. The only reason japanese mangas are still n°1 is because of their anime adaptations, but even that is also slowly changing.
I’m envious of the French consistently getting beautiful special editions of manga that the rest of us have to wait for or just straight up aren’t available elsewhere.
See the positive side : mangas are cheaper in the US.
The cons of a big market relative to pop that keeps growing without sign of stopping is that price just keep rising endlessly. When I compare the price of mangas in france now to when I was a kid and bought them at my local store, it’s nearly a x10 increase lmao.
I’m from the PH, not the US. Manga are still expensive af here unfortunately. I’m not sure if the price has ever dropped from when I was a kid.
That’s part of the bande desinee tradition in France, their comics are so much nicer than ours.
Bro, France was into anime ages before anyone else outside of Japan was. They’re pretty big in the animation world themselves too, and their own comic book giant Moebius has actually been very influential among Japanese mangaka and animators https://phantasmic.com/blogs/news/the-super-creators-moebius-in-japan
France is one of the biggest manga markets in the world.
France and Japan are very intertwined countries. Most of Japan’s desserts are all French. French people consume a shittonne of manga.
One of the French Presidents was so into Sumo wrestling they still have an award named after him.
The mutual love affair between France and Japan is really interesting.
Is he also a filthy gamer? Like soloing in Elden Ring.
All I’m hearing is that he needs to challenge Timmy D to a 1v1 SC2 match to officially settle who’s the greatest Spur of all time
It’s so weird that I’m 7 years older than that guy.
One of us!
It also throws me off when he uses gen-z slangs like “raigebaiting”
Knicks fan hoping we beat him but I gotta admit this goes hard. Wemby’s a legit anime fan btw, he was No Face from Spirited Away for a Halloween game in 2024
AOT’s a great manga/show for anyone who hasn’t read or seen it!
We just gotta stop the Wembling
I like how this also works as implying he’s still just a child and has two stages of evolution to go like a pokemon.
Yes, if we’re going the anime route. I hope Jalen metaphorically does what Goku did to Eis shenron. (Don’t care if not cannon it was a ruthless badass kill)
Rick Brunson revealed that Jalen used to spend so long in the shower cause he was practicing Kamehamehas
There’s also a pic out there of Jalen dressed as Yugi for Halloween one year.
He’d do better cosplaying Benson from Regular Show
it is cannon now. dragon ball super has gone all in on the multiverse and incorporated Dragon Ball GT into the broader story as a parallel universe.
“AOT is a great manga/show” might be the biggest undersell ever. To me, it is the greatest anime of all time.
I feel like goat anime is hard to gauge because it’s specifically a shonen anime. There are many genres of anime
For me, based on what I’ve watched it is the goat shonen anime for sure, but it’s hard to compare to slice of life or comedy anime, because they are completely different things
Like comparing a grave drama/action film to a slow moving slice of life film for example
I even go as far as dropping the “manga/anime” qualififer for it. Ir’s just one of the greatest tv shows that I’ve seen. That whole strerch of episodes in S3 culminating with Erwin’s charge is up there with BrBa’s Ozymandias for me. It’s really that good.
Honestly up until season 4 I would agree. Personally didn’t find the overall ending to the show that satisfying.
I also agree. Some parts in S5 (cant remember which S5 haha) got a bit convoluted at the end but I didn’t end up hating it to the point that it ruined the earlier seasons. It was not at the levelt of GoT ending bad. It was an okay ending. Could have been better but not catastrophically bad like GoT.
Totally agree. It is one of the greatest TV shows of all time. I have the survey corps logo tatted lol
Hell nah, it’s great but of all time is insane
Statements saying otherwise require you to drop some titles you put above it! 🔥
obligatory Full Metal Alchemist name drop
But nah there is no single best anime of all time, there’s just too many genres and good stuff that it’s just a matter of preference
Akira
That’s a movie so it is a bit different but no one can argue it’s significant influence
Bad ending tho
I’m always curious about this perspective, what made it bad for you? I loved how he ended it
!“thank you for being a genocidal maniac, you’re a good person Eren”!<
This. I don’t care the downvotes, the show was good until the garbage ending
What parts did you not like about it that makes it trash?
I don’t think it’s perfect by any means but ending a serialized story is often times the hardest part.
There are people who hate it cuz it was a weird ending, or some stuff wasnt properly developed>!like the love story imo!<, and there are people who hate it cuz >!they are supporting genocide and dont understand the story. !<I hope the guy above is the former not the latter lol.
editor carried the story then he got arrested and then the cringevengers shit started happening
Based on reddit, after I finished AOT I thought people not liking it was the majority opinion lol. I don’t agree, but it seemed like everyone online was hating on it
It’s kinda the perfect gate way to anime. It’s hard to watch that first few episodes and not come away without some sort of emotional response and goddamn does it just go hard from that point forward. Of course, the other classic is Cowboy Bebop, which you can’t go wrong with either. Although I think AOT is so insane and unique it’s hard to take your eyes off the screen and there are so many twists and turns.
i don’t know anything about it - should i watch or read it?
Yup this is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen from the NBA being an anime nerd and athlete. Peak
irl colossal titan
Attack Titan. Colossal Titan is Yao Ming or Boban.
Muggsy as Jaw titan
3 years max until he becomes a villain to nba fans
I don’t know how he becomes a villain other than no team can beat the Spurs and they go for a four or five peat. Then it’s just hoping someone can beat him
I don’t know how he becomes a villain
Easy path. If (when) he wins a title, all he needs to do is to lose it the next season, then maybe add one earlier playoff exit and he’ll be the villain, overrated, etc. Happens to all NBA stars.
Happens in almost all American sports these days. I remember when the Chiefs were the young upstarts trying to take down the evil Tom Brady Patriots in the AFC Championship. Then the Chiefs started actually winning and Tom Brady retired, so the Chiefs are the villains and everyone reminisces about how great Brady was.
People will have a lot more love and respect for SGA once he retires and people fondly remember him trying to fight off the villainous Spurs dynasty
Hmm when you put it that way… But what about lebron, I feel like we can just appreciate his greatness regardless if hes winning or not
His hatred came from the whole Heatles thing. Before that he was pretty beloved. But then again sports media wasn’t nearly as toxic back when he first came into the league compared to how it is nowadays
I think that’s the unique privilege for someone who solidifies themselves as a GOAT candidate - LeBron faced as much hate as just about anyone ever has earlier in his career, but it felt like the tides kind of turned when he beat GSW in 2016. Now that the dust has settled most people - myself included - are fans, but it just so happens that he’s still fuckin playing at 41
Jordan fans hate Bron for making his own case as the GOAT. Toronto fans hated Bron for that decade of torture. Lots of people hated him while he was winning, we’re just at that end of an era point where we have to admit his greatness like we did for every other great player that we hated
Lol fuck that
Hey I’ve seen this one before!
Giannis managed to do it and that seemed impossible
It happens to every superstar that beats up on the league long enough
He possesses the same childlike passion for the game Giannis did earlier in his career.
If Wemby dominates for a while, that passion will be narratively construed as “immature” or “childish” like Giannis’ became over time. His blatant elbow this postseason is even a pretty good parallel to Giannis’ trucking of Dunleavy really early in his career. People will then find reasons to complain about his game too, etc. It’s a cycle of NBA fandom, there’s a ton of hater culture in basketball
Steph?
I think Steph definitely had his era of being hated on, it’s just that the Warriors dynasty is over now.
But people definitely hated on his “cockiness” or arrogance, the way he chewed on his mouthguard lol, I remember when he threw it into the crowd people made a big deal about that
Probably get bored of a repeat winning team. But story line right now he’s gotta take the ship. To have him and SGA battle each other if each have a ring is almost like LeBron/Steph. Almost. Knicks haven’t been there either. So right honestly I don’t care who wins as long as it wasn’t the Thunder. Wemby should take it just cuz the shade of SGA winning the MVP again and Wemby wanting it. Finish the story of this season. But if the Knicks win, I cant knock them either
Shohei Ohtani is a villain for most baseball fans and all he does is post photos of his dog
Kalshi Wemby
Despite the fact that he’s French I just somehow can’t hate this guy. Many players are very easy to hate (Shai, Jokic, hell even Luka) but the passion Wemby shows for the game and very obvious drive to be the best itw is insanely refreshing. Bro wants it all and he’s getting it
U say many players are very easy to hate but list players that became hated just recently, after facing events that Wemby could go through himself. No one hates young stars until they start to succeed. No one hated Jokic until after he won a championship, no one hated Shai until he started getting into MVP talks, no hated Luka until a couple playoff runs into his career. People love him for winning and his drive and mentality and willing his team to succeed rn, in 2 years they could hate him for the same reasons
You’re not wrong, but I think the person you’re replying to is pointing out how the supposed nonchalance of the other superstars made it harder to root for them when the basketball stuff got rough. Jokic was the horse guy, Shai the silent killer, and even Luka barely speaks with the media. Wemby’s drive to be the best is something they all share to a degree—but there is a tier above that he seems to have achieved mentally.
It’s like Kobe, or Cristiano Ronaldo. A perfectionist obsession. You just have a sense that Wemby is mentally on a different level, raising his ceiling to the sky, and as a sports fan that is so exciting to see. Paired with his charisma and his self-awareness and his clear commitment to growth, there is a lot to love about Wemby as a person, even if Wemby the basketball player becomes the league’s antagonist for a while.
Luka was beloved until a few years ago, everyone loved him when he beat the Clippers and the Suns
That was for beating hated teams, which tbf is part of why wemby is being celebrated. We’ll see if the authenticity he brings outweighs normal narrative building. The nba needs a new face so I think he’ll stay loved barring flaming out somehow.
Authenticity is the perfect word for him. He oozes it.
Yeah, as a suns fan I feel blasphemous every time I root for the spurs but I love everything about wemby. Finding out about his existence through 2k was one of the funniest moments of my life. Lmfao
Yeah this was the consensus on giannis too lmao
I will never get over the fact that it is considered normal on this website to start your message with a crazy ass sentence like your first one.
Va niquer ta pute de mère
i love wemby but if he makes a few more extremely dirty plays like with naz, he’s gonna get a lot more hate
It’s really inevitable that continued success will eventually make you the villain, regardless of whether or not you deserve it
Sure it’s cool now. But that coin can easily flip and one day some bored r/nba lifer makes a compilation that’s labelled as cringey and overdramatic. Then will come the flop compilation, dirty plays, etc. we’ve seen this all before
Won’t even need more than 2 years. The US team beat Wemby on his home floor to win the last Olympics. Wemby will be coming to our home court for the 2028 Olympics in LA.
I remember how much the old school spurs were hated in 2000s because of dirty bruce bowen and winning a chip because david stern suspended amare for leaving the bench when suns would likely have won it all. The only thing I can think of for ppl to hate the spurs is complaining of phantom fouls gifted to vic or letting him get away with fouls as blocks and opposing fans criticizing the tiniest wiff of complaint by spurs players for calls.
Remindme! 2.83 years
13 years until he dies canonically
less, if they win the finals this year the heal turn will happen next year
If he stays quiet like Tim then there will be nothing to hate on lol
Anyone else does this and all the comments would be taking about how corny they are lmao
Sure, but he’ll be a “villain” like Kobe/LeBron/Duncan/Curry where his fanbase is ten times bigger than his hater base.
Is this the timeline for the Rumbling?
WEMBY! WEMBY!
HE’S COMING!
BEWARE
😩 All I ever wanted to do was do right things, I never wanted to be the King,
😫 I SWEAR!!!!!
“If I lose it all, slip and fall”
Oh, that’s SGA 😂😂
If he gets around to it, that art piece by Isayama is going to be next-level.
Isayama
Wembanyama
He watches anime? I like him even more now
You should check out his Halloween outfits. I think it was his rookie year where he cosplayed as No Face from Spirited Away.
I mean boomers are on their way out. It’s just the millenials and beyond generations atp. Animations are also insane rn. I’m glad one piece is seasonal now too. Although older generations had classics like Voltes V and Dragon Ball Z lol
Man this kid is cultured asf.
Star Wars and now Attack on Titan
Between this and his love of The Stormlight Archive, I feel like me and Wemby could be bros
This guy really going to end the jordan bron debate . I will say, this finals will be like tim thanking lebron amd saying its going to be his league for a long time, knicks will win but victor will retire the goat.
okay goat
stop making me like you
Fire celebration
“Celly”…
What does that mean?
Celebration
Last I heard that was your cell mate in jail. But I’m old compared to everyone in the NBA, and have never seen Attack on Titan, so what do I know?
He looks like the colossal titan after letting off a lot of steam.
Just can’t help but like Wemby.
When i saw this on TV I thought it was a ref to Luffy changing gears.
Dudes such a nerd lol.
Sasageyo as fuck
https://youtu.be/qOaaK2yr2Ik
I am a Knicks fan, and as a general fan of basketball, I really like this guy. But Wemby has years to dominate. I just want one in my lifetime. And that time is now.
Haha AoT or One Piece bounce man
That goes hard ngl
Oh the irony of him being the Titan to be attacked.
He’s holding the Thropy like a ps3 motion controller
The people’s king
Is that what that is? He did the same thing after that guy got that amazing block and I was like what is he doing?? Why is upset?? LOL
Yeah, I don’t watch a lot of NBA.
The Titan would go hard asf for a nickname
Mitch always looks depressed lmao
Based
REEEEEEINNNNEEERRRR
Generational player AND he likes my favorite anime? He might be my new GOAT
This means Chet is Bertholdt and SGA is Reiner?
if you freeze this on coach mitch’s face lol
Yeah not sure why he looks so despondent. He’s probably just spent.
When he finally learns firebending and goes full Avatar oh man
Weebanyama
is that a reference to attack on wemby
Maybe but he has probably seen or read Attack On Titans.
Saw the title and thought he was about to hit the Eldian salute
damn that’s cool. the last dude who got the high five was once a student in my class.
Lol I literally just posted this on the Spurs sub! Props! 👏😁
Lmao I thought the celebration would be him running a like a titan
A 40k Titan…
yes..
That’s a goated celly
French Titan 🥶
Wemby AOT celly > Brunson mask celly
🐐 anime
Did they have a special 10xl shirt made for him, or are they all that big??
bro put that on a shirt id rock tf out of it
I’m not much of an anime fan but maybe I’ll give attack on titan a try
Lol he really like a pure titan size too
Threads like this remind me that Reddit is largely <22 year olds 😅
Activate rumbling if they win the finals
here’s the Attack on Wemby video for those that haven’t seen it
The colossal titan has arrived at Maria
After seeing this and Kornet being blessed by nuns I gotta say it.
Spurs have the power of god AND anime by their side.
