So I initially thought the exact same thing especially if we’re talking about giving up Dwight and maybe a pic for Murphy but after looking more carefully at what Murphy‘s been doing these past couple years he’s 26 years old been averaging 21 points a game shooting 38% from three on over 6.5 attempts per game and 40% on catching shoot threes at five attempts per game also Brad Stephan says we need to improve our ability to attack the rim. Well Murphy was I believe top 20 in dunks this past year and also top 15 and steals is 26 years old heading into his prime so in my mind he provides great insurance in case either of the J’s get hurt AND if we can acquire him by trading a couple first round picks plus some of our young wing depth ideally not Hugo or Baylor or definitely at least not both of them but maybe Hauser and Hugo or Hauser and Walsh +2 first round picks….

Besides our big rotation the biggest issue was not having a reliable #3 scorer. With white basically disappearing it was Tatum/brown vs maxey/embiid/george

The games Pritchard went off we won handily. Every other game was a shootout with only Tatum/brown (or brown/white game 7) carrying the load.

And it became just too much to handle. Part of the reason we won in 2024 was that behind Tatum/brown one of jrue/KP/white could give you 20-30 any given night.

We need a reliable 3rd guy who can get you 15-20 every single night. This playoff run was too reminiscent of the older Tatum/brown years where they had to carry

I can’t imagine 3 firsts from Boston moves the needle much. Unless we get rid of Brown those are likely very late with Trey as our 3rd option.

With Brown, White and Pritchard as our rop 3 most of the year we got the 27th pick. We would be significantly better with Tatum and Trey.

I love Brown, hope he’s a Celtic for life unless he’s suddenly available for Wemby or something unrealistically insane. But his advanced stats are mediocre, he has a tendency to get tunnel vision, and the two times he was leading the team without Tatum he was devastatingly bad (2023 game 7, this year blowing a 3-1 lead - granted Tatum was a part of two of those final three losses). Generally, he’s a great volume scorer who shoots average efficiency and can be elite on ball defensively while making boneheaded decisions off ball. He’s a great spark star, but is a clear tier below guys like Tatum, Giannis, SGA, etc

Edit: also, I’m willing to ignore it, but dude is kind of one tier below Kyrie in terms of insanity off the court. Bro wears like an energy necklace or some bs lmao

Trey Murphy as a third option on this team would be incredible. He’s got size & can get his own. He isn’t a great defender, but I think he could be alright in the c’s defensive infrastructure.

However If this is a move to break the jays up and there isn’t also a playoff starting quality level big also coming back idk that I love it.

But if okc is also in the mix for him, which makes sense, they just needed one more scoring option, preferably one taller than 6’4, trey Murphy makes great sense for them. And they’ve got all those picks. And Joe dumars is a jackass. So, I can’t see us being able to make a more compelling offer than okc can.

I would hate this if it was JB for Murphy. I see no reason to go younger in a JB trade. If we are going to trade JB this year it should be for a superstar like Giannis.

The only time I would be okay trading JB for younger players is next year or the year after before he has to be extended for 70 million a year. This would be way too early to go younger.

Making $30m less than Jaylen is huge, but I think you need to add a lot more to seriously consider parting from Brown. Definitely would need Yves Missi since Vuc is gone. Would also want Dejounte Murray so he can play that Simons role for us and let Pritchard back into the starting lineup full time. If you add draft capital to that then we can have a real discussion, which is honestly possible given how aggressive Dumars has been in that FO

I’m not sure why you guys are thinking they’d trade Derrick for him (which is the only option if you’re saying “third option”). It would be a Jaylen trade. DeJounte + Trey works financially. I’d imagine they’d want to reroute DeJounte for a big.

That is if they do it. It does make the team younger and more flexible contract wise. Trey is comparable offensively to Jaylen (lower volume but still solid volume and way more efficient. Not as much playmaking but could maybe grow there) and costs half as much and is 4 years younger. I’d strongly prefer a Giannis trade, but this is an alternative route. Bill has no sources though.

We could also keep dejounte if he is willing to take a lesser role for winning. Imo pg depth is a bigger problem than center depth and we have other assets like hauser or one of the young guys to get a center. Personally I would love Paul Reed. A starting 5 of Pritchard White Murphy Tatum Queta is elite on both ends. Then Murray Hugo Reed Scheierman Walsh rounds out the bench. We can get this done without having to move anything outside of Hauser and Brown. Team gets cheaper and depth gets better.

DeJounte is a positive player but he *really* cannot shoot from distance haha. Which is fine for the center, but pretty much everyone else needs to be passable on our team. Especially in this hypothetical when you’re trading a top 5 shooter in NBA history. They could also potentially turn his contract into like two $15m ish contracts.

Also it really just doesn’t seem like they want Payton to start for whatever reason.

Yah the non shooting part does suck. It will matter less if other guys jumpers develop more. All we need from Murray is pretty much run Pnr when Tatum is on the Bench and corner sit otherwise. In the past he’s shot 44 percent on corner 3s. His 3pt percentage has been bad because he is mostly shooting pull up above the break shots that we won’t need him to take. If we trade Brown our only creators become Tatum and PP and if both are down we are in real trouble.

Ehhh Derrick is a good passer and Trey can absolutely create his own shot. Not an amazing passer but very good AST:TO (better than Jaylen has ever had), so I think he could grow there.

I see the argument for DeJounte, but Brad had his choice of either SA PG and he picked Derrick, not DeJounte. I don’t really see him being a Brad like player.

Biggest myth about Murphy is that he is a good creator. This season he had a +3.4 rts while being -10rts on creation with that being 22 percent of his diet. He is one of the best offball guys itl.

On picking white over Murray I would guess is just because we had smart at the time and the fit was better.

No it’s that Derrick was like 5th in RAPM in 2022 lol. I’m pretty sure Jrue was 4th (or 5th and 6th, but top 10 and I’m pretty sure Tatum was 7th). Clearly our FO is looking at RAPM or their own custom metrics that are similar. Derrick has always graded out much better than DeJounte analytically.

I do see your point on creation though, which is why you could do the DeJounte to another PG or SG or whomever who can do some creating + a center for his contract, however they want to split that up. I’d have to look at some realistic trades there to have a better idea though.

I really do believe in Payton as a secondary creator though. His stats with Brown off the court this year were *ridiculous*.

Obviously *best* case is he’s the tertiary creator and Giannis/Tatum are the primary creators, but this is assuming we don’t get Giannis.

Honestly he’s barely lesser. Grades out very similar to Jaylen in impact metrics and he hasn’t necessarily hit his prime yet. Lower volume and less playmaking, but much higher efficiency and way better shooter. And he costs half as much.

I’ve been calling for a Jaylen Brown > Dejounte Murray/Trey Murphy trade for a couple months now. I think there’d be more players/picks going out/in but this would be the foundation of the trade.

Murray gives us a better (than Brown) ball handler and a bigger/better (than Pritchard) defender at the point guard spot so Tatum can play off-ball a little more. I think Murphy could also take a very big leap with the surrounding talent and coaching staff. Will he replace Brown? Maybe not? But I think his youth and potential could be worth the trade off in addition to getting a bigger more athletic ball handling guard that can defend. I also think Tatum and Brown can play well enough to guarantee us making the playoffs but they don’t compliment each other well enough to be the two best players on a championship team when the NBA goes through San Antonio for the next few years
