Dylan Harper: “It’s a blessing to represent the Philippines, where I’m from. I think me and Jordan Clarkson are doing a great job doing that.”
Its a blessing because that country pays their entire GDP for basketball
such a shame Filipinos never embraced football lmao. Always will be disadvantaged in the height department
for being colonized by spain, im still baffled why soccer didn’t take root like other spanish colonies
50 years of American rule was enough to change things up, in part because Americans had a more centralized structure to their regime.
Could have been baseball
Not to absolve John Fisher, but the mayor(s) of Oakland at the time were giant pieces of shit also.
Modern soccer was established in England in 1863. the first Spanish soccer club was established in 1889.
We kicked them out of the country (with the help of the US who then turned around and stabbed us in the back) in 1896.
The game Spain brought to the Philippines was Pelota also known as Jai Alai.
Further research tells me that Spain had nothing to do with popularizing football in South America either, it was spread through British trade networks and their sailors.
On the other hand the US had an enduring presence in the Philippines after they took over in 1898, past the 50s when the Philippines was finally free. Because they established the public school system and built the schools, they dictated what was being studied, including what sports were in phys ed.
Wait, Philippines play basque pelota ?? How much ? A quick look on Wikipedia says that it has been difficult in the recent decades because of gambling and stuff and it’s now rarely played.
I don’t know about the rest of the world but gambling is the point lol.
I was referencing to that.
Are there many frontons to play in the Philippines ?
I just know if you wanna watch professionals play it and gamble on that it’s easy to do that.
Fun fact. His maternal grandfather represented the Philippines in Jai Alai in the 1968 Summer Olympics.
The greatest Filipino football player of all time is actually a Barcelona legend from the Spanish colonies.
Paulino Alcantara, was also very good at ping pong
Jai Alai

Yeah football in South America was mostly brought by British sailors, and then popularized by mostly German and Italian immigrants. This is easily seen by some clubs names.
A lot of Argentinian teams have fully English names: River Plate, Newell’s Old Boys, Boca Juniors…
They are a US colony more than a Spanish one. It’s shopping malls and US franchises everywhere, plus they learn English in school and not Spanish
Difference of importing teachers instead of friars but couldn’t quite change Catholics to Protestants
I’m 6’2 full filipino, literally get shamed by other filipinos for not playing college ball lol. Still bust their asses in pickup
Frankly, i am disappointed too. Get that scholarship
I play d1 tennis.. so the genes aren’t going to waste. And i can dunk so we cool
Nah stay on that tennis homie. We need some parity over here too
Always will be disadvantaged in the height department
while sympho1 is right about majority of Filipinos being short by global averages, there’s definitely a significant amount that are 6 footers especially with the future generations getting way better food nutrients.
for what it’s worth in the 2000s, most of the Filipinos in my (nj) high school (all under 6’) could grab the basketball rim in the high school gym. and everyday I’m seeing the younger generation are eclipsing the 6 foot barrier.
i lucked out at 5’8 (but tell people I’m 5’7 to piss off my best friends that are 5’7) cause my Dad’s side are the typical height, but my Mom’s brothers ~5’10. 3 of friends’ fathers are all solid 6 footers, but obviously all married short
only time will tell, but Filipinos love basketball
Fuck the height advantage, we haven’t created modern guards locally. For all the investment we can’t develop players who already have competitive heights. Its a good thing more local kids are learning basketball abroad
Filipino hoopers are the biz, but height does play a major role, even for producing 6’1 guards. When your average population is on the taller side, you have a wider pool of 6’1 guys who run the gamut of talent from awful to godlike. Thats why 6’1 NBA players are all phenomenal but 7’0 players can be either super good or just mediocre at actual ball skills, because the pool you’re picking from out of 7-footers is much smaller.
Extrapolate to original point: yes there are plenty of 6’1 Filipino dudes, but if you’re picking from a smaller pool to begin with, you’re naturally gonna have fewer chances to genetically hit on all the other talent tools you need. I have no doubt if the Philippines had as many 6’4+ guys as the U.S. that they’d at least be a reasonable pipeline of solid rotation players.
We have countless 6’1 guards in local college to the pros already, its increased over time. Average height of the national team is taller. Yes the pool is relatively smaller than a lot of countries, but our bellow 6 feet guys are also often terrible shooters and have shown that they aren’t even qucik or have good handles in international competitions (which is an assumption for so many people when they recommend football instead). Athletics and athletic development in this country is subpar, we have the capacity to produce so much more quality than our output.
Its not just investment, coaching direction from grassroots to the pros, refusal to let players play abroad and opting to demonize them for abandoning the local league, organizational disarray of SBP, etc.
The PBA was more established than the Japanese B league was, now the B league is the one poaching our talent and Japan has produced a Japanese NBA player locally who is below 6 feet (Kawamura). Height issues mask more problems vs being the biggest problem.
Japan has an insane high school sports culture only rivaled by like America and Australia
You ever see those filipino dudes free climb 80ft+ tall coconut trees with no harness? Just a machete to cut down the coconut and pure arm and leg strength needed. It’s crazy that with how quick and strong a lot of filipinos are, they would definitely excel in a sport like football/soccer if they cared about it as much as they care about basketball.
Instead when you travel around the country, it’s mostly improvised basketball rims everywhere. Not a single makeshift goalpost anywhere or kids kicking around a soccer ball. You instead see a lot of kids hopelessly throw a basketball at a makeshift court that’s somehow 12 ft tall instead of 10 ft.
Climbing coconut palm trees without a harness is very common around the world. They do it in the americas, africa, asia and wherever those trees grow.
yeah actually i’m part of my local coconut tree climbing Sunday league
go Crabs!
southeast asians are built to climb, Indonesians are record breakers when it comes to competitive climbing and they’re more or less similar to filipinos but with islam instead of christianity
At least they’re world class boxers
Who needs football when you have Efren Reyes?
The pool GOAT? In my basketball subreddit?
Shout out to Rafael Nepomuceno for bowling too!
Soccer players still need to be decently sized and have great physique to play at the pro level. We need to pick up baseball. Jose Altuve is like 4’10”.
LOL He’s not that short! He’s about my height, 5’6”-ish.
On the pitchers mound. 😆
Wait till you find out their second favorite and second most watched sport is volleyball lol
If you’re not tall enough for basketball then you probably aren’t big enough for football
No more boxing?
Uy Philippines!!!! Rawrrr!!!!! 🇵🇭🦅
San Antonio, Pasig Spurs vs New York, Cubao Knicks
Pwede rin San Antonio, Makati
I lived in san antonio pasig for more than a decade. Fantastic place

Edit: He locked in too
Si Dylan kay Jordan:
“Ngayon na ang kinabuksan, tanda”
Otits vs Young Stunna
Been shouting “kababayan” kapag tumitira sila JMac or Dylan.
He was born in NJ…. He isn’t from the Philippines unfortunately
Harper locked in for the Filipino Bench matchup against Clarkson 🤣
He’s gonna be like “It’s my time now, Lolo” everytime they match up
Gotta respect the elders and let them have it first tho.
I’ll be looking for that “Mano po” at the start of the game and at the end.
Si tito Clarkson lol
Otits Jordan
Tangina hhahahahhhahaha ang sagwa pakinggan
Manong Jordan
Toto Dylan
Man.. I ve been following this dude since his hs days as soon as I saw him wearing that t shirt with filipino flag representing Philippines in some kind of hs international game. Spurs is about to be have a whole country supporting them 😂.
Filipino fans support anything but they also turn quickly. Too many fans I’ve seen say they don’t want to claim him cause its not like he’d rep Gilas. Honestly, its definitely not cause he plays here but he has a very Filipino play style so I think he reps us well lol. Physical guard who will get 2 feet in the paint.
Idk. those fans are prb just the terminally online ones. Maybe he will represent or no. But at the rate of his improvent he ll most likely make it to US Men national or could end up being in max contract which could be expensive to insure or prevent him from playing other leagues.
Yeah and there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t like people pretending that he doesn’t have a right to claim his heritage though. He’s always recognized that part of him since he was a kid. There are struggles he doesn’t know of at all for sure which can be disappointing, but he is Filipino. Tas yung mga nagsasabi pa yung lalayas naman rin sa bansa if nagka chance.
Probably the same fans who honestly thought Kai Sotto should have gone 1st overall in the 2022 draft and got mad at every team for not taking him lmao
My uncle bring up Kai Soto every time i see him. He cheeks bro give it up.
He was also born in NJ… Nowhere near the Philippines
Embiid, Olajuwon, and Ewing weren’t born anywhere near the US.
I thought they mostly support Lakers so Idk if they will support Spurs
Yeah they love Kobe so much and Lebron. I think they will if Dylan visit the country and he gets the attention of local news station.
i’m wondering did you also follow his brother Ron Harper Jr.?
Yea, watched him in Rutgers too. Glad he got picked by Celtics.
They should be supporting the guy who actually plays for their national team.
Jalen Green probs somewhere feeling left out
If he were in the finals, I’m sure he would’ve gotten at shout out too lol.
Great, now I want ube
Get some Jollibee dude.
literally had some while watching last night lol
Jollibees are the only fast food fired chicken hot enough for me.
Step it up Americans
Hot as in in temperature or as in spicy?
Spicy
Interesting.
What’s so interesting?
What you said.
Lumpia
Cameron Diaz: adobo
I think it’s fitting that AAPI month ends with a Filipino-American guaranteed to win the Finals.
The Spurs have the hispanic community AND the filipino community supporting them rn. Do you understand how powerful they could be?
Mexican yes. Puerto Rico and DR would be repping Knicks hard tho 😂
Puerto Rico, DR and Philippines. Too powerful 🤣
don’t forget France too.
FRAAAAANZZZZ!
Wasn’t he born and raised in New Jersey lol
I’m pretty sure His Mum is fully Filipino
Okay so his mom is from the Philippines. Maybe it’s just weird wording but he’s from New Jersey.
normally I wouldn’t care when someone says they’re whatever nationality despite being born and raised in the US but him specifically saying “where I’m from” even though he’s born and raised in NJ is funny
It’s just wording jfc no one can let anything go anymore. Gotta take offense!
Yeah that’s exactly my point lol you can say your Filipino but you can’t say your from the Philippines. You grew up in a mansion in New Jersey buddy lol
African-American
Feels very weird then to say he’s from the Philippines
She is.
Ron always had good game. She is a beauty.
Smartest celtics fan
Saying “I’m Filipino” and “I’m from the Philippines” are two completely different things.
If someone says they’re from the Philippines then you expect them to be either born in or lived in the Philippines. This dude was born and raised in New Jersey with an NBA player father.
His mother taught him basketball and coached him, I think. And when Maria and Ron separated, the kids lived with her so I guess Dylan is just thankful that his Filipino mother stepped up.
If he considers part of his ancestry, culture and identity etc to be from the philippines, then he can say “I’m from there” because that is all part of who he is. It literally is just up to him. It’s not up to you to say if he is from because if it was that’s how you get mixed race people who feel like they belong nowhere.
Also how is the fact he has an NBA father relevant, it sounds like you’re accusing him of larping as a poor filipino boy who immigrated to the USA to chase his dreams but nobody implied that, he’s just talking about his heritage which he is proud to represent.
Stop it. You can’t just decide to change the meaning of words. FROM has a meaning and it literally means to be physically from a location, it has nothing to do with how you feel.
You are the one being unnecessarily pedantic. When people say “I’m from X” what they often mean is my family is from, my heritage is from, etc. Where they credit a part of their identity being from. Communication and language is about interpreting what people mean not waving a dictionary in their face. Never has been and never will be. And he used from in a very widely understood way.
Zero people in this thread were confused, you didn’t clarify anything, you just wanted to police his language. That’s why it actually is about feeling in this case because you weren’t motivated by clarity you were motivated by wanting to feel like a smartass lol
“Dont be pedantic”
Literally no one uses “im from x” that way.
speaking of pedantic, “literally” nobody uses it like that? what about the video we just watched lol
I have literally never heard anyone use it that way and I’m from a very diverse area. When someone says they’re from Vietnam or Ghana, it means they lived in Vietnam or Ghana. If they weren’t from there, they wouldn’t say they were from there, they would just say their family is from there or that’s there ethnicity/nationality, it really isn’t that hard to understand.
it’s so incredibly clear what it means in this context of a reporter asking him what it means to represent the philippines
Jesus just let the guy have his moment, it doesn’t matter the semantics of what he said. Just that he meant it as it were his heritage, and that he is pretty much acknowledging his roots. You’re acting like a pearl clutching redditor over a bunch of words lol para kang tanga ampota
Sorry, I’m from Poland so maybe it’s just a disagreement of linguistics. (my great grandpa emigrated from Poland 90 years ago)
That’s not how it works.
My parents are from a country in Asia, but I was born in San Francisco. I visit that country and I absolutely love it, but I’m not from there. They themselves would laugh at me if I said I was from there. The culture is a cherished part of my own, but I’m from California. I’m from San Francisco.
it’s so clear when he says “it’s an honour to represent the philippines it’s where I’m from” in response to a filipino reporter asking what it means to him as a filipino, he is paying homage to his heritage and the people he is representing, not solely referring to wherever he was born. Picking apart the use of that one word serves no purpose other than being an ass.
I don’t know if you’re an American born child of immigrant parents, but if you were you would know we don’t say we’re from the country of our parents. Not because we’re ashamed of it or feel distant from it–quite the contrary in many cases–but simply because we know more than others that it’s not true.
Is English your first language? I ask because you’re having a very hard time grasping such a simple concept.
That’s not how words work lol. I’m from Massachusetts. One of my grandfathers is from New York. Does that mean I can say I’m from New York?
Well ackshully 🤓 reddit moment. STFU
Fuck it this is so off topic but i looked up his mom when I saw this because I was surprised he was half filipino and holy shit she’s fine as hell
She also coaches ball and pretty much coached Dylan and her other 2 sons their whole lives. She’s dope as fuck
She played D1 and met Ron Harper at a basketball camp.
Making 30m+ in nba salary alone while playing for the most famous team in the world at the time has other benefits
U weren’t lying
Should’ve seen this sub when he was drafted.
Uy pilipins
Pinoy fried 🔥🔥🔥 represent 💯

My dad would be so proud if he realized a Filipino player is guaranteed to win an NBA championship this year, I should tell him.
I love the way this kid carries himself
Putang ina Philippines! Chicken joy for everybody!
No shout out to his brother :o
Respect his mom Maria! I didn’t realize his grandpa played for Philippines.
Pinoy twitter about to lose their damn minds
Lol. Don’t play for us yet.
Nobody would blame him if he played for the USA. Keep working. He’s got star potential
no one would blame him but one of these days someone should go take the actual hardest road.
I was so disappointed when Paolo Banchero didn’t choose to play for Italy.
Born in Seattle. Raised in Seattle. Certainly eligible to play for Italy, but not sure why you’d be disappointed when he’s American af.
Because he was in talks to play for Italy so it could have happened.
One of these days someone is going to man up and say to the world “I am the best player in the world and I want the biggest challenge: I want to beat team USA in the Olympics.”
Would’ve been cool for a guy like Kobe to have done it since he was fluent in Italian and lived there (although I know he likely wasn’t eligible given his ancestry).
Uy Pilipins! Pilipins 🇵🇭

Dylan Harper Spurs jersey is gonna go crazy in the Philippines
Oi, Pilipino
Those filipino reporters always asking about playing for the Philippines are shameless, can’t even read the room.
As a Filipino myself, the reporter doesn’t really sound like someone from the Philippines.
Agreed - I know tons of Filipinos, that reporters sounds more Chinese to me.
From your username and the correct usage of Filipino… I’ll see you at the lechon. Go Spurs
MAHAL KITA DYLAN HARPER
A Harper/McCain backcourt for the Philippines would be absolute fire.
It’s so damn beautiful how global basketball has become, and how tb game has grown to see representation like this!
Filipino swag.
Love some representation. 🇵🇭
Dylan Harper has been very vocal about his heritage, and you have the older Jordan Clarkson who actually repped our national team at one point.
I guess his brother isn’t representing? lol
Dylan “Mandirigma” Harper
He should go up to Clarkson and get a “blessing” from him.
Cut to Clarkson taking off his tsinelas and running around after Dylan saying “Bastos!”
Cut to Jared McCain in the foreground saying, “This has been brought to you by San Miguel beer. Ito ang beer!”
Tang ina, congrats Dylan!
Fc
It was great to see Harper matched up with McCain last series even though Jared is like 10% Filipino
The Jollibee Spurs
Dylan Harper is Filipino and from the Philippines??
why that reporter voice seems nervous and shaking
Fact: Filipinos are the most powerful race in the world
Dude…there are so many things wrong with this statement. Be smarter.
I’m pretty sure the comment is tongue in cheek. It’s a running joke in threads where the Philippines is mentioned because there’s some crazy Filipinos on Facebook posting stupid statements like that
TIL.
Smh no ball knowers here
