But seriously, they did have that one last lottery pick, and I’ve always wondered how different they’d look if they knew they were losing Boozer and could have drafted Al Jefferson or even Kris Humphries.

The lack of high picks subsequent years to flesh out the rebuild was definitely a big factor. Had they tanked for two years after getting LeBron there’s a (highly unlikely) world where they could have had LeBron, Dwight, and CP3. With young Lebron’s playstyle at the time that’d be an even more lethal version of the Heatles Big 3, 5 years earlier.

Both 04 and 05 Cavs didn’t make the playoffs. But they blew the 04 pick and the GM gave away the lottery protections on the 05 pick so it was lost.

They weren’t top 5 picks or anything but a serviceable FO could have got at least one solid player out of those two picks

The Cleveland front office made lots of mistakes too. Drafted garbage (cannot even remember his name-the 19th pick), failed to retain to Boozer, gave huge money to Hughes who was seriously bad for that kind of money, did not trade for Amare, obtained veterans like Wallace and Shaq after their prime and so on.

In fact, I can hardly recall any good moves from them. Maybe drafting Gibson in second round, signing Mo Williams. Oh, a good defensive coach.

Compare that front office to that of Bulls who drafter Pippen, Grant and then obtained Cartwright by trading Oakley. They surrounded Jordan with good players at each position because they had the vision to began with. Cleveland on the other hand kept making sideways moves with no plans at all.

That isn’t untrue and Cavs were also fucked a bit by the whole Boozer saga. Having a guy like Lebron around though, I would’ve liked a ballsier move to make something happen, playing around free agency.

Boozer leaving was huge for those early Cavs. I also remember them giving up picks for fucking Jiri Welsch, and overvaluing JJ Hickson.

His starting 5 was Mo Williams, Boobie Gibson, Big Z, and Sideshow Bob. That is a lottery team without him, and a Finals team with him lol.

Wagner really wasn’t good when he did play. I understand the expectations and the HS pedigree (I read SLAM Magazine at the time, and he got significant hype in there), and I get that the early 2000s were as much about “looking the part” and “getting your shot off” as it was about it being effective and actually going in, but .454 TS% on 23.9 USG% for his career (103 games, 2,202 minutes) is awful chucking on a decent sample size, any way you slice it.

Tbf, the GM didn’t botch the Boozer deal, the owner *kinda* did because Boozer backed out on his word. To the point where Rob Pelinka resigned as his agent because his boss, David Falk, was furious about how that unfolded and the whole agency dropped Boozer as a client.

Sasha Pavlovic arguably the second best player on a finals team, boggles the mind.

Considering the one of the knocks on him was “he needed to run for help, couldn’t do it by himself” and that he failed to win in Cleveland, it has been a knock against him for a long time. Now with such a long and illustrious career, of course there are multiple knocks against him. Pointing at the many lost finals is also a funny one. We got multiple time MVPs that struggle to even make it to a conference final, let alone one proper final and here a guy gets shit on for merely making it to the finals multiple times and not winning more.

People had the audacity to say that Luke Kornet on <$10M/year (with a partial guarantee in the third year and team option in the fourth) was a bad deal, somehow. Dude’s one of the best backup big men in the league, and he definitely helped us win games when Wemby was injured this season.

His only issue is that he’s a standard drop coverage big, and there’s only so much one of those can do when getting schemed against by one of the most well-coached and deepest teams in the league. He’s still had his moments in this series though

Plenty of bigger names have tried to enter the space and failed, good example is Trae Young.

Teague was so unremarkable in the league, had one of the weakest All Star selections, spent the back half of his career on mostly irrelevant teams until he was luckily traded to Milwaukee to retire with a ring.

But it isn’t just that he has stories, but he does a great job conveying the details and uniqueness of the situations too. Not everyone in the NBA is actually interesting to listen to.

League is also a great storyteller though. Not everyone can make it so entertaining
