Some thoughts on Game 6

San Antonio came out hitting almost every three they took and moved the ball really well to find the open man. The Thunder couldn’t match the barrage but were able to generate a lot of smart basket through dribble hand offs and stretching the Spurs defense to the three point line. However, those open threes that they made in the previous games were not falling as often. Spurs would play their Wemby zone whenever he’s on the court and the corner shooter just didn’t hit enough to punish them.

Spurs are still being heavily outmatched on non-Wemby minutes. Its less pronounced this game because everyone was hitting threes, but whenever Wemby comes off the floor that Thunder offense tries to rev up and slam into them. Jared McCain was a main driver for the half court Thunder offense, he was not afraid of penerating and attacking the basket and generated a lot of opportunities. Although because both their on-ball creators shot terribly tonight, they couldn’t get a lot of open threes from kick outs.

During the second quarter when the Spurs looked like they couldn’t miss and the Thunder offense stalled out, SGA took it into his own hands and generated 10 straight points to bring the lead back to manageable. Overall he really has underperformed this series with him struggling to hit shots he normally makes. The physical play and Spurs having 4 good defenders to deal with him is resulting in disappointing outings. I did remember seeing he had a wrist or hand issue but without their single best offensive weapon, the Thunder just have so little options for half court offense.

It won’t be a Spurs-Thunder game without a quarter dedicated to extremely early bonuses for both teams. The third quarter was a slugfest of physical basketball and both teams were making worse defensive plays and committing more silly fouls. The Spurs proceeded to blow the game open in the third when the Thunder literally could not buy a basket, even with the Spurs turning it over quite a few times.

Thunder have to hope they can hit their threes and SGA finds his shot back. JDub is clearly not ready for playoffs load and McCain cannot be relied on for the entire game to carry the offense, especially if his shots are also not falling.

Biggest takeaway from this game is when the Spurs hit threes, their offense is very pretty as shooters force defensive attention and the guards can just attack relentlessly. Also non-Wemby minutes were actually good this game. They slowed down the pace and just focused on denying easy looks, it helped that they were able to still hit threes while Wemby sat and the Thunder shooters could not. Biggest is that Castle and Harper have calmed down on their turnovers and have much better ball security denying that transition offense that the Thunder love, even when Thunder get out in transition, the Spurs have been really good at denying easy transition buckets.

Super excited to watch Game 7, I’m happy as long as its a close game with great basketball from both sides.

I’m tuning out all the noise, this season has been a resounding success for the Spurs.

Pushed the defending champs to game 7 of the WCF in their very first playoff run eith this core. Absolute hell of a performance in their very first elimination game.

Regardless of what happens on Saturday, I’m so proud of these guys, this has been such am incredible season, and it’s been a joy (and at times nearly heart attack inducing) to watch it all!

I know all the talk will be about Wemby but I think Castle, Vassell, and Harper played insanely good collectively. They are so much fun to watch, it’s like the opposite of the Thunder’s guards. My hatewatching OKC has turned them into my favorite team throughout the year.
