The Cheapest Knicks Tickets for the NBA Finals Are Thousands of Miles From New York
New Yorkers have, in fact, been waiting a lifetime for this opportunity. The Knicks haven’t made the NBA Finals in 27 years, suffering 17 losing seasons in the meantime.
That pent-up demand has sent prices soaring in New York. According to data from SeatGeek, the average Finals ticket in New York costs around $6,000—the most sought-after Finals ticket ever tracked.
So Knicks fans who don’t have the equivalent of months of mortgage payments to burn are doing the next-best thing: following the Knicks on the road. In Oklahoma City, the average ticket goes for less than half the Madison Square Garden price, about $2,600.
The resale company has registered the trend of desperate New Yorkers heading out of town—even without knowing which town it might be. Between 40 and 50% of sales for the games in Oklahoma and Texas have come from buyers in the New York/New Jersey metro area. Chris Leyden, SeatGeek’s senior director of marketing, said it’s “a level of fan travel we typically only see for marquee events like the Super Bowl.”
