IIRC the NBA made rules to fight unnatural basketball motions aka flopping, what happened to that
I think it was shortly after the peak of harden, maybe 2019? It just stopped for some reason and I don’t remember anyone talking about it.
Refs called it for a week a couple seasons ago then basically stopped.
Once LeBron got the flopping tech, it immediately ended, lmao. I’m not even joking either.
Of course, imagine them trying to enforce that now with Luka on the Lakers
He’d be averaging 5 rage outs on refs per quarter
He already does lol. As much as people have a hate boner for shai, he never complains for calls when he doesn’t get them. People glaze Kobe for knowing the rules to get away with stuff but now that the superstar is Canadian, it’s a problem
Yep, they were ok calling it on Derek Fisher, Lance Stephenson, but once they caught Lebron they shut it down haha
Derek Fisher? Retired in 2014 Derek Fisher?
Yeh i remember they fined people when lebron was in Miami.
Can’t remember exactly if he got fined or someone on the team was one of them, and he did an interview saying he didn’t work on flopping during practice or something.
It was the pacers vs Miami ECF. There was so much flopping in that series it was weirdly comical.
Ps: D fish was notorious Flopper. There was one where someone did a charge and Derek fisher and a teammate next to him synchronised flopped like pins getting hit by a bowling ball
Oh I thought the flopping fines were more recent, thanks for the info
Eh. I don’t think we understand what the rule means. Because players stopped jumping backwards into defenders to get shooting fouls. Almost entirely.
Either that or some of the suspects are not in the league like Chris Paul. But Trae Young, James Harden, and Jalen Brunson were doing this. Mostly Trae and Brunson.
They don’t do it any more. The rule was for them and this motion specifically. It was too egregious to see a player “jail” their defender and jump backwards the moment they felt the defender’s hand on their hip or back. This is the “unnatural” shooting motion.
What? This still happens. Players penetrate, look back, stop on a dime, and pretend to go up for a legitimate shot to allow the defender to run into them all the time. Those types of plays should be offensive foul since it can result in head/face injuries for the defender. Can’t count how many times I’ve seen a defender in that situation get the offensive players crown to their jaw.
That’s not the same. Not at all. Players like Trae Young and Jalen Brunson literally jumped backwards into trailing defenders. This is the unnatural motion that’s described in the rules. They don’t do this any more.
They have rules against traveling and carrying the basketball as well. Doesn’t really matter if they don’t enforce it
Yup, Giannis travels basically multiple times a game
Kyrie carries multiple times a game too
Its kind of like holding in the NFL, if they called it every time, the games would be an extra 30+ minutes long
They only call them sometimes and usually just the egregious ones
If they called it every time players wouldn’t do it every time
This subreddit is just full of casuals who don’t watch the games
Boy, that really added to the conversation
is he lying tho ?
Take from it what you will
a circlejerk about “flopping” is not a conversation
Same thing that happened to that investigation about Kawhi and Aspiration
Refs aren’t good and players got better at initiating contact to the point where it’s almost a grey area also sometimes on tv we can’t see the full contact. I noticed that when I went to a few games irl the tv angles don’t always show the best or even all of the game at the same time it’s weird. Players be grabbing and pushing each other a lot more than they show on tv. All in all they try and put in a new rule players will just find a way to exploit it.
I remember the season when they started that. First game Brunson legitimately landed on a defenders foot. They called flopping and i don’t think they ever called it on the Knicks ever again
If they actually enforced it, guys like Harden should have racked up dozens of flopping calls over this season
Same with the other usual suspects, SGA, Embiid, Luka, Smart, etc
It’s probably just hard to enforce in real time. You call it and then you look like a huge asshole if the guy actually did get hit and you’re accusing them of lying about it.
The same thing they always do with Silver’s useless “points of emphasis”. They call it like it should be for the first week then never again
Unnatural shooting motion is still an offensive foul and gets called, most people stopped kicking their legs out 9 feet after that rule got added
Yeah this got called in the Pistons series. It’s all still in place, both the unnatural shooting motion and a decent fix to tangling arms and shooting motion, which is not that noticeable because it’s a simple common foul on the floor now.
Players will always game the system. Fact is the nba don’t mind the fouls
Clearly people in here do not remember why they made that rule and they did enforce it and it stopped the behavior it intended to. If anyone watched recalled that league wide on jump shots players would jump side ways, diagonal and backwards into Moving defenders that was clearly not “natural shooting motion” and would get free throws, If I recall Harden and Lillard where two of the best at the side ways jump into defenders. You don’t see that anymore if so it’s rare and it usually does not get rewarded with a foul or free throws
Nobody more marginalized than the hive mind of OKC haters!
They did enforce this for 2 weeks during the season but for some reason whatsoever they stopped enforcing it
This shit is so annoying
Happened like every rule set without enforcement, fuck all.
It was a while ago. Pretty sure it was during David Stern era. Harden was still in OKC I remember him and Ginobilli bumped each other and did a double KO flop and David Stern started fining them.
Obviously they wouldn’t give techs for it during the playoffs especially in the Miami LeFlop era so that rule didnt last long in practice
Cheats like SGA just did it anyway
