The best part was this is a “confessional”- they have a booth where players can go to provide their thoughts for the audience (they cannot receive any incoming communication). For example “I’m a little worried about his attack, but I studied his game against Duda last month, let’s see what he has prepared for me”. Only a few players would go into the booth to talk about something totally unrelated (the US Women’s champion, Carissa Yip, regularly talked about her outfits, getting oysters at nearby restaurants, and Charli XCX songs a few months ago).

Yep. There are specific team tournaments. It makes sense since lot of tournaments are online, so teams have their own e-chess squads.

Last year Magnus was a big tournament under this new e-sports brand and it was completely setted up as any other e-sports game with sitting crowds, a renewed scenario, bigger screens, etc. Magnus said it was one of the most enterteining tournaments he remember playing.

Online chess is considered an esport now :p

Not to disregard the other points raised, but the main reason esports orgs like Falcons, Liquid, Vitality, and others are sponsoring chess players is because of the inclusion of the game in the Esports World Cup, which has a TON of Saudi funding and an overall “club championship”.

Most of us europeans are not in the threads because we sleep at the time. We wake up in the morning and watch the games then, THEN hop on socials not to get spoilers.

The app has spoiled a few things for me as well, for example nba cup when Lakers lost to Spurs. The score was hidden, but the game was titled “spurs advance” or something like that.

I too am practiced in the squint technique. Squint and soft gaze out of focus, trying to load up the “start from beginning” selection without spoiling. Annoying experience.

Found out recently there is an option to block scores fwiw:

To turn off live scores:

1. Open the Prime Video app.

2. Go to Settings from the main menu.

3. Select Sport.

4. Toggle off Show live and final game scores

Magnus plays considerably less chess than he used to. He’s a dad now so that probably sucks most of his time these days but since he relinquished the title in 2023 I’m sure he’s has more time to be a regular dude
