First playoff run is a deep playoff run, and the whole team’s inexperience is showing. Wemby was carrying them for much of the series because of that - Castle, Harper, Bryant all have adjustments to make and need another year at minimum to mature. Wemby also has a very different body type and game than either traditional or modern centers, and he isn’t Jokic playing on only one side of the court. The Spurs and Wemby will adjust to all of this, but it takes time.

Thoughts on Game 5

Thunder made a lot of the threes they missed in Game 4 tonight, and handled having no second side creators by just making threes and opening up more space to drive and operate. Honestly I can’t tell if the game plan changed much other than make more shots, the Thunder trust in their role players to attack and perform regardless of previous game performances.

There was a ton of free throws in the second quarter because both teams entered the bonus by the 8th minute. I didn’t really enjoy watching the play start and stop for 8 minutes straight so I kind of tuned out for a large part of the quarter. The officials were not allowing much physical play on ball, so many fouls that were play-ons in previous games became loose ball fouls and personal fouls, overall didn’t enjoy the refereeing this game at all.

Shai’s highest scoring game was also his worst game in terms of ball security and distribution. Spurs stayed on single coverage, but always placed a help defender nearby, which resulted in a lot of kick out turnovers. These turnovers are the result of Spurs overloading on SGA’s side of the court and forcing less kick outs of the same side and more cross court. He drew a lot of fouls this game, partially due to a very quick whistle, but partially because the Spurs refused to give him space and whenever the Thunder were in the bonus, those silly personal fouls becomes a pair of free throws.

Spurs showed a lot of grit when down 20 in the third, playing cleaner and making better defensive rotations akin to Game 4, while making big threes via their role players. Champagnie was having a poor series offensively but was on fire at the half, Keldon Johnson was aggressive all night attacking the basket and Vassell made threes when it mattered while playing good defense in single coverage against SGA. They really made up for Wemby’s lack of scoring tonight, he was exhausted and was facing heavy interior coverage and he missed a lot inside tonight. Spurs offense always looks terrible when Wemby cannot hit longer range shots.

I’m curious as to why the conference finals didn’t have a single 2 day rest period and that it’s gonna be 1 game 1 rest day the entire way. The players are so gassed, a lot of players are just commiting bad fouls and poor offensive posessions just result in settling for a contested three. I’m hoping for a less foul heavy Game 6, but if both teams continue to play very physically, might not happen.

I agree it was a mix of the thunders hitting their shots today, and wemby looking gassed (and it seems that the spurs live and die by wemby).

when the spurs play disciplined, they shut down SGA and OKC hard, but then when they make mistakes, they can spiral and be their own worst enemies. that’s not something they can afford against a team like OKC that thrives off forcing mistakes

Yeah I agree, the Thunder don’t really rely on SGA hitting shots because his distribution has improved so much since last year. The Spurs rely on Wemby’s gravity similar to SGA’s gravity but when Wemby cannot reliably get to the inside, that offense is putrid. There was also that stretch in the third quarter that cut the lead to 9, when the Spurs defense was a lot more disciplined and also moved the ball better, but after a smart timeout and timely SGA substitution, the lead never got smaller than that.

On the Wenmby of it all. I was saying in the first quarter and then all throughout the game, “why is he playing so far from the basket?” He was outside the paint near the 3-point line on both sides of the ball for the majority of his minutes. That feels like coaching decision and I don’t understand it.

Being near the basket invites physical play and contact. Jostling for position with IHart and Caruso and Chet all game has sapped his energy in Games 1-4. He looked exhausted the entire game and didn’t really invite contact prior to handling the ball, but his handles aren’t good enough to get a clean pass at the high post and then dribble into the interior. I was on copium thinking that this strategy could mean better 4th quarter minutes, but he missed like 3 shots in a row in the fourth and it was over at that point.

Game 4 was beautifully done by the Spurs. They forced Thunder into making bad shots. But I honestly felt game 4 was a bad night for a lot of Thunder players. Spurs players played much more disciplined and a desperate hunger to win. I feel like them and the fans threw off Thunder’s game all night so a lot of players just couldn’t find their rhythm.

Naturally game 5 that wasn’t the case. So Game 6 will be interesting. Spurs are a hostile cornered animal so they’ll play with more ferocity for a win. Question is if Thunder will have a repeat bad game or if they can weather it, make consistent plays to make points, and minimize turnovers.

Never a good thing when the refs are one of the main takeaways of a game. At times, it does kinda feel like there are three teams on the basketball court.

But even then, this should not ignore the fact the Spurs didn’t play particularly well tonight. They’ve had decent chances, just couldn’t capitalize.

One more thing: Sixers fans, I kinda feel sorry for y’all. Your team’s decision to “sell high” on McCain will remain in basketball infamy for quite a long time.

OKC had several of turnovers late in the 4th and Spurs couldn’t capitalize to take on runs of those turnovers to get close and tie the lead but they couldn’t.

This is the first game I thought Wemby wasn’t good and was the first game since I think February the spurs lost his minutes. His defense did not feel as impactful as normal and on offense he was content to sit on the perimeter. He only finished 1 lob the entire first half. The commentators kept bringing up this fact and how weird it was he was not playing down low. I think the answer is Wemby just can’t. At his size and build he does not have the conditioning to bang down low with someone as big and strong as Ihart for 7 games. The spurs need a big 4 just for some more inside presence with Wemby or another center so they can run double big.

He didn’t just not rebound, he didn’t hold his space well either. Settling for threes, missing dunks, these are the signs of tired legs

OKC can throw tons of guys at you and unfortunately for SA the non Wemby minutes you just leak points, it’s not like you can just give him an extra few minutes rest when the +/- numbers are that extreme and expect to win

People act like these guys are robots or can go grind levels in stamina, but that’s not how it works. Being that size and being able to do so much offensively and defensively isn’t sustainable playing every other night in the playoffs.

Even prime Lebron had limits. Spurs will have to shore up the roster and gameplan more efficiently in the future. They will figure it out in a year or two, I’m sure. The league is fucked when that happens
