As a fan, it sucks when there’s radio silence from the league for shit like this. I do like the final 2 minute report. But I think they also need to release some kind of report for outlier circumstances like this. Just to give the fans any sort of acknowledgment that, yes, the NBA fucked that one up.

Also, the league MUST actually start dinging teams and players for flopping. It’s terrible that we do nothing about it, and it’s double terrible that there’s already a rule in place that is simply not enforced. I don’t even ask that they call it in real time, just hand down punishment post-game for plays that were clearly flops after a postgame review. It’s terrible for the product. Embellishment here and there, or even a flop on occasion, is tolerable. But we’re seeing at least 4-6 flops a game this series and it’s just not sport.

There’s always this excuse of “fast moving sport” which is fine, I get it, but at this point we’re so technologically advanced and the league is so cashed up that it has to be intentional. As for why, the only reason I can think of is to create plausible deniability so the league can keep fixing games.

This sequence of events could have cost the Spurs 12 points in about 30 seconds of gameplay.

• goaltending not called (2 points lost for Spurs) – could be down by 8, still down by 10.

• Kornet fouled but it’s called against him (2 in theory if they call the Thunder for foul and he makes both FTAs) – could be down by 6 at this point. Williams misses both FTAs he shouldn’t have had, still down by 10.

• Ball off Chet given to Thunder (could have cut defecit by another 3 points to just 3) – still down by 10.

• SGA trips over his own feet, but is “fouled.” During this stoppage, Spurs coach is called for a technical that never should have happened. SGA makes all 3 FTAs to go up by 13. Mind you, this Thunder possession never should have happened.

They will do everything to cover up the fact that it’s rigged. Can you imagine the lawsuits from people who have lost money on those games? You have to call a timeout and then challenge. It doesn’t look like Johnson called a timeout, he just asked to challenge it. You can certainly argue it’s implied he’s asking for a timeout by asking to challenge it but that’s still not the right way to do it.

I ref locally in Canada, schools use FIBA rules. In FIBA you don’t get an automatic 30 second timeout if a player fouls out. The rule is you have 30 seconds to get your sub in. So if you bring the sub in right away, you don’t get an additional 30 seconds. Once the sub is in, the game has to continue. It’s awkward but that’s the rule and you’re supposed to follow the proper order of operations.

Mitch Johnson is kind of infamous for this - he uses his subs and always takes forever to make a challenge to take advantage of replays etc and this time it cost him. He could have challenged a full 15 seconds after the call was made.

The rules are you need to signal for a timeout to challenge. And you need to signal for it immediately and before the ball is either handed for the inbound or before the ball is handed to the FT shooter. It looked like mitch was late and didnt call a TO to me, but dont let this ruin the narrative that this was “rigged”.

If you have timeouts to give, the twirl generally counts as the challenge and time out unless the refs are feeling ultra anal that day. A coach can also call a timeout without actually Ting up their hands, though it does make it harder for refs to ignore.

I hate the way this played out and I hope the rules around this change in the offseason. The Spurs were pretending to sub to buy more time to look at the replay and decide on a challenge, so I guess if the refs wanted to be hyper literal and petty (Tony Brothers would never lol!), that would be the excuse. But I’ve still got an issue with that bc (1) everyone does this, and (2) in no sane world would a challenge signal be read as “I’m trying to challenge without calling timeout” instead of “I’m calling timeout to challenge the play.”

I’m pretty sure if you have a timeout available, asking for a challenge has always been treated as effectively calling for a timeout at the same time.  Which is why no one actually knew this was a rule including the announcers.
