[Highlight] Mike Brown when asked if he’s encountered a leader like Jalen Brunson:
“Tim Duncan and Steph Curry.”
the strong, silent types
He was gay, Gary Cooper?

“I wanted an MVP, but I compromised. I took 2nd team all-nba instead”
Ate grilled cheese off the Radiatu
The Luka trade, whatever happened there?
“Whatever happened there?!” I’ll tell you what happened: this piece of shit’s general manager sent him to the Lakers without any provocation whatsoever!”
Luka, he was just a kid
he never had the makings of a varsity athlete
Well take that up with Frankie Vallie when you talk to him
First Team All-Yaoi
Still going, this asshole?
I can’t believe I can’t even escape Sopranos on r/nba.

Once you’re in this you’re in it for life.
So what, the Florida thing is a no go?
It petered out, it died on the vine.
Are you calling Tim Duncan Gary Cooper?
The point is: Gary Cooper, the real Gary Cooper or anybody named Cooper never suffered like the Italians
Always with the scenarios
It’s a shtereotype and it’s offensive
game 1, whatever happened there
never had the makings of a varsity athlete
They both quiet leaders like Brunson lol Kobe and LeBron were loud he’s comparing what leaders he’s like they ain’t ask him to list every single leader he’s known
The lack of basic communication literacy here is insane. Reading these other comments, it’s insane. No wonder conversations here are like this.
One of the most tiring things redditors and social medias heads in general do is respond to someone providing a good example by asking why they didn’t mention every single possible example 😭
what, does coach brown hate waffles?
Woah you want to talk about Coach Brown but not Roman Emperor Gaius Iulius Caesar Augustus Germanicus and his insane actions?! How inconsiderate
No hate but you writing all that out and somehow messing up Julius is cracking me up
He is historically correct. There was no “J” in classical Latin. His name was spelled IULIUS
TIL. No “U” either, hence the “V” use. Now I’m down a Wikipedia rabbithole on GAIVS IVLIVS CAESAR and the Romans.
Oh that’s why they called Erving “Dr. I,” that makes so much more sense now
That experience has birthed a specific writing style. I can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s essentially defensive writing, where even if you want to contribute something innocuous like onion rings* taste good to a conversation, you add qualifying statements, acknowledge other sides, be sure to say you’re only talking about your opinion on onion rings etc. to preempt an army of combative replies that find an endless well of points to argue against in what you naively thought was a harmless opinion on one food dish.
There’s a viral clip where a lady called commenters on one of her videos the final boss of rhetorical questions lol. Everything has to be treated like a dissertation where you account for all possibilities and have a response ready.
I don’t mind someone including some of this for the sake of nuance, but it definitely can go overboard to the point of being unreadable.
Damn I do that at work all the time when I’m writing documents for stuff and didn’t even realize it.
I do this for sure – will qualify every thought by explaining what it’s not to preempt the possible retorts which is a bummer because it’s now the way AI frames ideas “it’s not X, it’s Y”.
Lmao that really describes it perfectly. Sometimes I do see comments with the defensive writing style and I get why users do it, just to see someone reply with something along the lines of “no one asked for all that” and then I shake my head all over again. It’s a pick-your-poison situation since so many people just want to disagree or argue.
Or take the extreme of your comment. So you said more than 5? You think it’s 10 billion!?
No I said more than 5.
This sub is filled with angst teenagers who like to shit on things for upvotes. Been like this for years
It’s not even that, it’s just that the entire point of the video is he’s making a stylistic comparison of leadership styles not naming a list of the best leaders but like tens of commentators didn’t get that at all. And he communicated it very clearly, it’s almost concerning
You’re taking too much credit away from grown people’s stupidity. You honestly think Reddit of all places is really popular with teenagers? This place is relatively niche.
Fuck, now that you mention it. It is pretty scary if these dumb comments are made by 30 year olds. Especially the OP’s: Me and a friend were having a debate over so and so please help.
Teenagers are assholes. If a classmate finds out you’re using Reddit they’re just as likely to make fun of you for it, 😂.
Whenever Reddit gets brought up on other social media sites it’s always being made fun of, as if Reddit doesn’t legitimately have the best comment section on the internet.
I mean regardless of how bad you think Reddit is, all these other sites are so much worse.
Reddit is horrible in many cases, but comment sections on every single other platform are so much worse. At least Reddit is designed for long form substantive discussion, even if people are often too stupid or braindead to engage in it. You just need to be selective about where you do so, but you can find it without looking too hard. The same thing simply does not exist at all on Youtube and Twitter, as two examples.
As an example, at least when you see legitimate white supremacists/neo nazi comments on Reddit there’s actual accountability, even disregarding moderation. On YouTube there’s just dozens of comments agreeing with them and dislikes and reporting does absolutely jack shit.
Reporting comments do not work outside of Reddit.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted. You are absolutely correct.
A quarter of the American population uses Reddit, not that niche.
When you’re comparing Reddit to the usage of other social media platforms in America, it absolutely is niche.
The older I get the more I think I just need to find a bar or something to watch games at. Everything is a cesspool now.
why even a bar? why not at home?
Some people like socializing.
They’re in their 30s
Lots of “so you hate Waffles!” Redditors in the comments
sometimes i’ll comment on here and get someone replying to me responding with the exact same thing i said but in an argumentative manner. like yes, i literally said that already?
or they’ll start arguing against some point i wasn’t even making
or i’ll respond to a comment being like “no, that’s wrong” and they’ll give me a response acting like i didn’t understand what they meant, even though their original comment clearly isn’t making that point and they’re just backpedaling.
Redditors aren’t known for being able to read between the lines unless it’s a light year wide
Through a semicolon in an article title and all the comments will be linking r/titlegore or complaining hoe confusing the title is.
A quarter of the American population uses Reddit. You’re just describing Americans.
Welcome to Reddit lol
Reddit deserves its reputation.
You can read the headline one way and off you go
Aren’t a large portion of kids coming out of highschool in america these days functionally illiterate? It really isn’t that surprising that it bleeds into reddit.
This comment section genuinely might be the final straw to have me give up on humanity. This is so fucking obvious and basic. We’re fucked. Idiocracy is here
The reporter literally mentions humility, and Brown talks about quiet leaders.
Many people only read headlines and don’t watch the video, I guess.
It’s worse. It’s everyone as a whole. People are illiterate yet they get to make powerful decisions. Critical thinking? Ha!
Why you got so many spaces between sentences?
[removed]
Uhm.. most poster here caught the tail end of Curry’s career and basically watch Duncan’s career on YouTube. I have made the mistake of overestimating the age of Reddit user more time than I care to admit
The first time I felt old based on sports memories was when there was a thread of someone asking why the number 27 was funny and there were some incorrect responses before I had to tell them about GSW vs Houston
But that was eight years ago and it would make sense for a 20 year old to not understand that reference
A Timberwolves fan commented that “Spurs fans don’t know what it is like to be this far in the playoffs” and I turned into the Matt Damon saving Private Ryan meme. I’m 35. The Spurs have won 5 championships since I was born, 4 of which I vividly remember and I personally went to watch two separate Finals trips in my 20s. All of that to have a Wolves fan talk like the Spurs had never played in the second round.
No shots fired or anything but damn, if he was 20 or whatever our last second round trip was when he was 11 which seems like a million years ago to him.
For further context it wasn’t even trash talk. It was a very nice conversation, he was just making what he thought was an obvious observation which somehow makes it worse.
Hell, going back to the prehistoric times before Duncan, the Gervin-led Spurs made it to 3 conference finals, getting bounced twice by the Kareem/Magic-era Lakers.
Nah most people here aren’t dumb. They’re intentionally divisive.
ngl the second sentence makes you one of them
It’s also more about leaders who carry themselves with humility. Bron’s a nice guy and not a psychopathic asshole like Kobe was, but he isn’t exactly a super humble leader either. While Duncan and Steph embody that much more. Different leadership styles.
He would despise me
Had to throw Kobe in because you’re a LeBron fan who got his feelings hurt lol
Kobe is not a leader. He is an arrogant rapist prick
Those two things, very sadly, are not mutually exclusive. Even during the rape scandal there were armies of fans defending his “character” lmao.
People definitely will plug their ears and deny reality for their favorite athletes. Only gets more disappointing the older you get.
The thing I admire about Brunson is he stays steady regardless of what’s going on. Knicks could be down 20 or up 20, he stays the same. He doesn’t freak out. Or talk trash. He’s just steady. Perfect leader.
This whole squad seems to be like that. Even when they were during a bad losing streak, there weren’t any news of issues within the locker room.
Eh, there was def rumblings during that Dec - Jan rough streak
But they clearly worked something out and are fucking rolling
Yea there was
Man what lol? During basically every bad stretch these past two years we’ve heard talk of people needing to “let go of their egos” in the locker room.
inch for inch, he’s the perfect leader
Even more so than the on-court performance, this is what stands out to me the most about Brunson on the Knicks. In the 2000s their best player was Stephon Marbury, who had a mental breakdown (much of it livestreamed) at the end of his Knicks tenure. In the 2010s their best player was Melo, a considerable improvement over Marbury on and off the court, but still a bit of a knucklehead at times. It’s such a night and day difference in the overall feel of the team when their best player just so tangibly has his shit completely together, is both extremely tough and extremely humble, etc. You feel that so much even just watching as a fan, can’t imagine how much of a difference it makes in the locker room and the wider organization.
Same with Cade.
Poised. Collected. Composed. You’re totally right. He’s a hell of a player.
Even with Hart’s fingers up his ass
He’s a pro in the best way
So is Shai.
So now even genuine praise is getting downvoted for Shai or this sub actually believes he is not a good leader.
It’s clear he’s saying quiet and humble leaders. Obviously there is more than one type of leader. It’s crazy that almost every comment here is about what he didn’t say and not what he did say.
The reporter mentions understated leaders who carry themselves with humility. Mike Brown mentions quiet leadership.
And people on here are saying “Where’s Kobe?!”
Yes, the famously quiet, understated, and humble Kobe Bryant 😂
And LeBron doesn’t really fit the mould either.
Kobe to Jeremy Lin
“Don’t talk to me unless you have more accolades under your belt”
This is not a “leader”.
Or famously penniless Kobe sucker punching his teammate Samaki Walker on a team bus in front of everyone, over a $100 bet that wasn’t even due to Kobe for another day.
Then Kobe running away and jumping into a car with his bodyguards before the (much bigger and heavier) Samaki could punch Kobe back.
Then later calling Samaki in tears, sniveling a “please don’t kill me, I don’t know what came over me” kind of apology.
Great leader, that Kobe. Just the best. Lol.
Whos Kobe
He literally says the word “quiet” yall are confusing asf. How is anyone misinterpreting this?
Seriously the reading comprehension in that thread is brutal. Dude was clearly just naming two all-time greats with that same calm, lead-by-example vibe, not starting a tier list lol
He was also got a chip as an assistant coach for the Spurs during the Duncan era and 3 with the Curry and the Warriors.
Lead by example, let the game do the talking.
Perfect comps.
Fuck you nico
It’s crazy to think that Mavs at one point had Luka Bronson and Porz at the same time. Nico really fucked it up real good
Don’t forget Cuban and the rest of the front office didn’t want to pay Brunson a team friendly contract and waited until it was too late.
So, Cuban deserves some criticism here as well.
REMINDER: It was 4 years 55.5 million. Brunson said he was 100% going to sign it too.
and the warriors in 2022 dispatched those demons in 5
man KP was one of my favorite players, as was THJR for some reason…lol. i was so jealous when you guys got KP, THJR, Brunson AND Luka. Thought it was a dynasty in the making. I HATED DSJR even before the trade and wanted Brunson instead… and not because I thought Brunson would be anywhere near this good, but because DSJR was just a moron.
Super underrated thing about Brunson is how insanely coachable he is. People have him pegged as a “gimme-the ball” super-star but in reality he plays that way because that’s the way Thibs told him to play after Randle went down. He actually initially took a backseat to Randle on offense and played way more off ball. Not a ton of stars who could’ve been as iso-heavy as Brunson and then on a fucking dime start playing off-ball in the playoffs
Yep after Randle went down with the shoulder injury (thanks JJJ) Brunson was shoved into the main lights and showed the world he had main star qualities after finishing the season strong and doing postseason heroics.
We saw that when he was taking a backseat to Luka but had to carry the Utah series in 2022.
It’s funny Jay Wright said Brunson was the only player he ever told to tone it down from working too hard. JB would do skill practices with his father after team practices at Villanova. Dudes work ethic, coachability, intangibles, it’s all unreal.
Yeah I’ve been weirded out every time I’ve seen comments about how Brunson is selfish, doesn’t want to give up the ball, etc. He’s been a ball-dominant scorer for much of his time on the Knicks but it’s never out of unwillingness to pass or selfishness, it’s a combination of that being the coach’s strategy and him being so good at it. I guess maybe it can look like an unwillingness or inability to pass the ball more or play more off the ball to fans who only watch a few of his games now and then but if you follow the team closely it’s completely obvious he’s not that kind of player. Of course, that’s been playing out in real time with Brown’s adjustments in the playoffs making KAT more of a passing hub.
He definitely is not selfish. I do think critiques of his hero ball down the stretch are totally valid, like you can say he is making the wrong decision, but you can’t say he’s doing it out of selfishness. My defense of his hero ball in the 4th has always been that you may think it’s a bad idea for him to do it but literally every opposing team thinks it’s the right idea for him to iso because they’re so afraid of it they’d rather play 4-on-3 than let him cook. Like if it was truly such a bad decision they wouldn’t freak out and double him
I think that’s the growing into being a superstar mold. Some guys are “born in the purple” and I think struggle to ever adjust from just always being the best player.
To be fair, Bron was 20 when Mike Brown coached him. 5 year span playing devils advocate though. But come on, as great as Bron was even then…. His leadership with them Cavs rosters was “let’s go hoop, because I am”
I could be completely wrong, but I feel like LeBron didn’t grow into the kind of leader he’s known for today until his second run with the Cavs. I think he grew a lot during the Miami years.
I don’t think you’re wrong
I think it took a year of contending with “oh I’m the one” after losing with Wade and Bosh
Bron is just a completely different style of leadership from the three he mentioned. Much more vocal and less understated.
Also a bit more subtweety.
High praise
How did Ayesha Curry come up?! 😅
He goes on to say that those are the type of guys you’d want your daughter to marry. However they’re already married. The thought was there, just not as fluidly expressed as it could’ve been
Yeah he literally explains it less than 5 seconds after mentioning Ayesha. I swear some people love to post comments before watching the full thing.
Still kinda weird to say when asked about leadership comparisons lol
I mean he already explained the leadership part at the start. He just wanted to show how great of a human Steph and Jalen are, so he mentioned Ayesha and his “daughter”. He came off a little awkward but I don’t think there’s anything wrong or weird about it.
mike tryna eat a lil brown
The fact that Brunson and Luka were part of Mavs must be killing Mavs fans.
It kills me and I’m not even a Mavs fan
Im getting second hand death
Brunson interviews are so nice !
I’m happy for Mike man
This right here. That’s it.
Lebron stans having an aneurysm right now.
No mainly just people without basic context comprehension
Tbf to LeBron, Brown had a very young LeBron before he really grew into himself. While he got Curry, Brunson, and Duncan at fully evolved levels
Fuck you Nico, fuck you Nico, fuck you Nico.
are the commenters here all teenagers with no reading comprehension?
put him in the top 10 all time now!
The best team leaders since bill russell. That factors in to all time greatness in a team sport, whether you like it or not.
I am still unsure if Mike Brown is my most favorite or least favorite current lifer NBA coach.
He’s got the vibe that those coaches in the late 80s/early 90s classics possessed.
Imagine being compared to Steph Curry; Tim Duncan must be so proud.
I almost fell for that bait although I think it would have been fair to say the level of leader LeBron was when he had him isnt quite on this level.
Leading a worse team and a worse mike brown to the finals? Not sure what level you’re talking about but switch that LeBron with this Jalen and the knicks are favorites against Thunder or spurs even if both are healthy, by a good bit
You guys listen to a word he said? You really think LeBron is a “quiet leader”?
“Jalen Brunson can have my daughter” - Mike Brown, EPSN
that took a weird ass turn toward the end
“Nah i’m good” Mark Cuban
We talking AURA??
Mike Brown wants to date Jalen Brunson confirmed.
“James har—— hold on hold on, LeBron James’s I meant”
Coaches dropping words like “aura” is so funny. Obviously it’s been around for a long time but the meme-ification of words really kind of rebrands them to being Gen Z words.
Also unnecessarily bringing up players wives when he could’ve just said “the humble and classy kind of guy you’d want your daughter to marry” hahah
The reporter that asked wanted him to say no 😂
I think the cavs were missing a leader. Your best player talking about game 1 still, they were already cooked
That feels like a shot at LeBron a little bit lol
Say Saboner you coward
LOL!
This man will never be the same as Steph and Tim. That’s WWE talk
YIKES.
Didn’t he coach LeBron and the Cavs in 2007 ?
Wait why did he bring up Ayesha and her looks?
He just meant to say that if he had a daughter, he’d want her to end up with a great guy like Steph or Jalen. He knew how that would sound though, since they’re both married, so he made sure to compliment Ayesha (and Ali) to make it sound less weird/awkward.
It still was a little awkward lowkey
You try taking press conferences for a year straight and not say something that people could clip on social media and call awkward.
This type of awkwardness is super common in real life.
Relax I’m not even taking a dig. Was just a bit awkward. Anytime does the whole “I wish my daughters were with them!” Is a little weird and I think as a society we can compliment men without saying we want our daughters to be piped by them.
Is this a good time to remind people that Kobe is a rapist?
And a groomer. Never a wrong time to bring that up.
No LeBron. No Fox lol
Pump the brakes Mike one is the greatest of his position all time top 10 & the other a carried bus rider by the league/lowly media lmao
Does anyone have an English translation of this? Just wondering who it’s about.
Huh?
Weird to hear a current coach qualify his statement with a “he’s not the same player [as either Duncan or Curry]”
He’s not wrong for the clarification, but if anything, you’d expect a current coach to gas up a teams’ leader rather than suggest he’s not as good as two greats
