Coach Mitch Johnson gives Carter Bryant a bit of a hard time after a rookie mistake, pulling his jersey, and screams at him.
Victor Wembanyama showing leadership, cheering the young fella.
Seeing him look like he was about to cry actually made me feel kinda bad for him just on a human level I know you can’t make mistakes in sports and you gotta get disciplined sometimes
For real, you can see he cares and it clearly stung him. But having vets and even Wemby hype him up right after probably means more than a soft approach would’ve.
I mean it’s not like Johnson was being mean about it. He said what needed to be said, then slapped him on the butt and basically said get back out there and do it right. Pretty standard stuff if you’ve ever played a sport. He didn’t even take him out of the game…
SLAPAAAAZZZZ
He got back out there then committed a turnover then he got take out that’s when they showed this clip.
He was so on the verge. It’s the dreaded thing when you are trying to hold it in–the person who shows you some love…I’m impressed the flood gates didn’t open.
Obviously not the same thing, but many moons ago I played d2 ball for a coach that straight up fucking hated me. Used to absolutely rip me to shreds in front of everyone every training and game. Watching this took me straight back there lol.
Your username is just too appropriate for this comment.
This fan fic is hilarious, you have no idea how close to tears he was or if he was going to cry at all
Uh, bro, you do realize emotional distress is visible, right? Please tell me you know this. People who can’t make this distinction we call psychopaths.
You’re telling on yourself man
If he’s anything like I was when younger, the emotion comes not from getting disciplined, but from feeling frustrated/disappointed in yourself knowing you’re normally better but just making repeated blunders/mistakes when consciously trying not to. Especially in a high stakes game like that one
That’s the big value of getting him playoff minutes so young is just to get the ‘bad reps’ out of the way so he feels much more comfortable and less pressure years from now.
He definitely looked a bit shook up
We easily forget these are people because they seem superhuman to us. I make mistakes at work all the time but I don’t have a stadium full of people watching me
Stadium of thousands + HQ cameras broadcast to millions, yeah I’d cry if my fuckups were that easy to view
Doubt you have a 4 year $23M contract. I’m also very sensitive to being yelled at, but I would think Carter has experienced it before. Many coaches lose their ish over mistakes.
It could be the case that he hasn’t experienced it before. He’s a rookie so there’s a possibility he’s always been the best at what he does and the best out on the court until now.
For sure. Early in the season he was making a lot more mistakes and looked even more raw - so they sent him down to G-league. He looked really good and got called back after 1 game because it was clear that he won’t be growing there. Him getting playoff minutes is already a hug vote of confidence.
No matter how many times I fuck up I still beat myself up though. I think that’s what this is
I’m sure he got a good guy cry out in the shower that night.
Emotional maturity is understanding both those things coexist.
It’s the NBA western conference finals. Pretty wild a player would almost start crying after being criticized by the coach. This isn’t middle school basketball
Dude is basically a kid man
Gotta cut him some slack, yeah it’s the conference finals so he’s gotta grow up fast and this is part of it
He’s a young guy, this is his real intro to a tough league. He’ll get better because of it.
Facts
you can always tell who has played sports and who hasn’t, getting yelled at by your coach is not a big deal, its literally their job. people act like he’s being emotionally abused
And it’s not like Bryant didn’t completely earn that too.
Yeah. Great defender and potentially a good shooter but needs to build his situational knowledge. Turnovers against OKC lead to 20 pt runs
I love watching this team figure it out and grow up right before our eyes though
He’s gonna be great and definitely credit both Wemby and Mitch because of it
I’m sure you can make those mistakes without being shown up in public and still emphasizes the urgency and importance. If Mitch can’t do that, he’s gonna have trouble at some point.
I mean Pop did this a lot too. We had clips of him in a shouting match with Duncan on a timeout. Sucks for CB, but he’ll learn from this.
Think it’s about knowing the player not everyone responds well to that
I understand that but it’s not like we’re in the regular season where ticky tack mistakes can be brushed off as a good try. And for the record I like CB, I do feel bad that he got shouted at, but it’s also a testament in Mitch’s belief that CB can do what he is asking. Otherwise he’ll just ignore and bench him.
Yeah I understand where your HC is coming from you give the thunder a lifeline and they run off a 17-0 run. As long as someone else pulled him aside to check on him it should be fine
Yeah thankfully Wemby and Castle at the end of the vid was quick to check on him. I guess Mitch might have overdid it slightly but we’re in a do-or-die situation and our bench was heavily criticized the last 3 games so he needs to make sure they are locked in and our starters are not forced to come back early. I’m sure they talked after the game.
One of the best coaches ever getting into a shouting match with one of the best players ever is a bit different than Mitch Johnson pantsing a 20 year old rookie in a blowout over a charge. Not a big deal in the grand scheme, but the two situations are hardly comparable.
I’m not comparing the two, I’m putting into perspective that if Tim Duncan, one of the greatest players of all time, can be shouted at by his coach then a rookie who is making mistakes certainly can. This is crazy that Mitch is getting even a bit of flak for this. He isn’t bullying CB, he is coaching him, literally his official role in our team.
And btw, if you actually watched the game, he got called by Mitch BEFORE the charge. He made two straight mistakes on defense prior to this. The charge was his 3rd error. A 20 point lead against OKC in the 3rd is far from a blowout.
That lead could vanish in an instant against a team like OKC. Absolutely needed to set the rook straight, and anyone who’s making a mistake, to protect that lead.
Pop did the same thing to a young Danny green
And Tony Parker he was on his ass constantly in the early years
Yes which was fine because he ALSO did it to Duncan. Has Mitch been seen yelling at Wemby in a similar manner or does he just do it to the low man on the totem pole?
Okay, then what about him yelling at Danny Green?
he just told him to take his time and lock in. absolutely nothing wrong with that
Great advice. Any other adjustments we can make coach?
Pop yelling at danny green vibes
“Shut the fuck up!” 😂
“Dumbest motherfucking thing I’ve ever seen in my goddamn life!”
That was brutal. I felt bad for DG after that.
Mitch is definitely channeling his inner Pop with that one lol. Love seeing Wemby hype up the rookie though, that’s how you build a real team culture.
Nah the words used is definitely more uplifting than the tearing up he did for Green and Parker lol
Lmao feels like 60 years ago
Shit the fuck up you idiot motherfucker
Danny green: wot mate
Me with my manager in my weekly 1-1 meeting:
Compliment sandwich.
“Now Typical_Cap895, you’re a real first-one-in, last one out type of fella, I love that about you.
But your actual work just isn’t very good.
…but your hair looks nice today. See you next week”
(i’m not very good at this)
No, no, tell me about my hair
your hair looks small…
I hate the compliment sandwich. Give it to me straight. I’ve actually been taught in leadership training to use the compliment sandwich. Tried It for a few weeks with different direct report and while each received it differently, it doesn’t feel genuinely me.
There’s no easy way to give criticism, but as long as it’s constructive, it’s something they can actually work on, and you really care about them learning and getting better, they’ll appreciate it (whether immediately, or later in the their career).
The compliment sandwich in corporate is just considered safer for the individual who is relaying the feedback. Believe me I hate it too, but there are people who may need to hear the “we see your hard work” or “we see the potential” amongst giving the real criticism or shortcoming
Me with my wife at our weekly therapy session.
Fuck, weekly? I already feel like monthly is too much
Lmao this is so real
Bruh lol. My manager called me in last week going off.
Except we get paid like 1% of Carters salary 😂
That butt slap would get me going
This is cool and all, but he should do the same thing to Keldon Johnson, he looks like he deserves it even more than Bryant
I do recall him benching Keldon after a defensive lapse one of these games.
Probably that specific play/ foul which the coach discussed with him/ team beforehand.
Honestly yeah, Keldon’s been making some head-scratching decisions lately. Would love to see Wemby get in his ear a bit too, that rookie energy needs to spread to the whole team.
Rookie no-name coach won’t have the balls to do it to KJ.
Top 3 in coach of the year leading a team with zero playoff experience into a deadlock with the champs in the WCF.
Hating because why 😭
A contingent of our fans hate Mitch because they decided he was terrible last year and instead of reevaluating, they’ve made hating him part of their identity. It’s weird.
I’m an OKC fan and I’m a fan of Mitch! He’s a younger coach and is learning too
Carter Bryant is gonna be so good. He’s a golden retriever w so much energy right now. Rookie on the biggest stage doesn’t wanna mess up. He’s gonna be a stud!
[deleted]
Literally shooting 42.9% from 3 in the playoffs..
Shot 37% from 3 in College too. I’m almost positive he’ll be a solid shooter someday.
He’s a solid shooter right now
A shoot 3, defense and got hoops also better than most of our bench.
I really like Carter Bryant, obviously there will be growing pains, he’s got so much energy and potential and you can see it, but he lacks control, Johnson’s going to reel him in and help him master it. Spurs are going to be terrifying for the next decade lmfao, just thinking Wemby, Fox, Harper, Vassell, Castle, KJ, Bryant, and Champagnie. The oldest being Fox at 28, it’s insane, I think if they don’t win it this year they go get themselves a vet in the offseason that can help on the floor to facilitate.
Fox only being 28 is crazy, I thought it was 10 years ago him dueling with lonzo in college
It was 10 years ago
“Damn I can’t believe 10 years have passed, it really only feels like 10 years have passed”
10 years ago nvidia was .91 cent
It’s been split 40x since then.
And Dgaz was $2 and hit 25k in 2020
Do the math…that was basically 10 years ago
Lonzo Ball and De’Aaron Fox were drafted almost exactly 9 years ago, man
yes
What age do you think college kids are? Lol
They won’t be able to pay all those guys of course. But as long as they build right around Wemby, Castle, and Harper they’ll be really damn good.
I think Keldon will be a lifer because of his skill set not being as valuable for a lot of teams and he won’t want to move his farm. Vassell could go either way. I don’t think we will be signing Champagnie to his next contract. Some team is going to talk themselves into giving him $25 mil+ a year because they think he will be the next Anunoby or something
Who the fuck thinks he’s anywhere near OG? Come on
I have seen too much of the NBA to know that rarely do you get a core for a decade. But hey, our dubs did it and so did the OG spurs.
I think the game is just a little too fast for him still. He’s thinking too much. It’ll slow down a lot between season 1 and 2 when he has time to step back from the grind of the season and continue to learn.
I’m sure Mitch yells at Vic too, like Pop cussed out Timmy. Every Spur takes coaching, because the team’s leaders take coaching.
CB will learn from this. He’s still a 14th pick rook playing critical minutes in the biggest WCF in recent memory. He’ll be fine.
Actually, not really. This is the first time in his two years that I’ve seen him go off on someone.
Pop did it like once a month., Mitch stays quiet. It’s only this series that I’ve really seen him show some emotion. It’s nice to see finally.
I’d love it if this was the start of his villain arc and he turns into a full time abrasive hothead
idk why but I’d enjoy it
Yeah I haven’t seen him go off like that til last night. Now I understand his voice lmao.
That kinda attitude is something coaches also need to ‘earn,’ more or less. You can’t have a coach like Matt Eberflus yelling at his guys and then staring like a deer in headlights as the clock winds down and you grasp the timeout in your pocket. I’m guessing we’ll see him get more fiery as he gains experience and the Spurs cement themselves as a consistent top 3 team in the west.
This is just hard coaching and knowing your guy. Mitch clearly thinks the kid can take it. Nothing Mitch did looked out of pocket, and I think buddy was disappointed he let coach down more than anything - which is a sign you have a good coach.
I agree. If anything this shows he fully believes in this player and knows he can get more.
good coach doing his job
Yeah looks like he is saying listen to me when he grabs him and coaches him on something
It’s true that Johnson yelled and pulled his jersey, but it was super quick and you could tell he was coaching him and encouraging him to be better. Good coaching IMO
Right it was a “focus on what I’m saying” grab, not a “come here you stupid piece of shit” high school coach grab.
I’m not even sure he “pulled” the jersey. He just grabbed it to emphasize that he needed to really hear what he was saying.
Yeah, the extra context at the end of the clip that Ashley shared supports that. Apparently Johnson told Bryant ahead of the game that he knows the Bryant will be making rookie mistakes, and that Johnson will yell at him for it, but that the kid’s instincts are good and he should go out and play.
Man I wish Finch had this much passion
Finch is old as hell compared to Mitch bruh lol
Old dudes can’t go like that all the time, I remember in the NFL Gary Kubiak (ex Texans head coach) passed out while his stress/blood pressure was up and he had to step away for awhile
Finch is 56 lol
A mere lad… I got underwear older than that!
56 years old. A fuckin’ kid
A rookie with a significant role against the defending champs in the WCF. Talk about being thrown into the fire.
He just needs to remember that most OKC players are too wobbly and will fall down at the slightest contact.
Toxic work environment and hostile workplace. File that grievance to HR 😂
Jokes aside, I actually hate this style of coaching. I’m sure he’s overall an amazing coach and this is how his passion is coming out - but to me, in an ideal world, I would HATE being coached like that. It just makes your head spin and then you doubt yourself and make bad decisions. A great coach knows what each of his players responds to, and it didn’t look like that worked well with Carter. Hence Vic having the emotional intelligence to encourage him and try to calm him down.
Yeah that’s a kind of dissociation I recognized
He looked to be being way harder on himself, Mitch didn’t seem to be demeaning
yeah this is a disappointed in myself look from bryant
Honestly wasn’t as bad as I remembered. Maybe the still shots changed my perception.
He definitely ripped into him good. But the still shots I saw made it look worse lol
Dude can’t even drink yet, what an experience this must have been.
Reminds me of high school ball
Looking at coach Mitch Johnson’s body language it didn’t really like he was full on screaming at the kid. He clearly expressed his discontent but quickly regained composure to let Carter know what he expects of him.
Take your lumps young man. You’re going to be a pretty good player in the NBA someday Carter!
This is called coaching
Mitch Johnson showed leadership. Wemby patted him on the back.
But here’s the key! He told him what he needs to fix, then he sent him back in. He corrected him but still made sure the kid knows he’s trusted. Moments like these make young talent
its hard to dislike wemby
Any lip readers able to interpret what Mitch was so mad about?
At first I thought it was the charge on what was pretty clearly a 1-on-3 but now I’m thinking it was a blown defensive assignment?
Exactly my thoughts, a little of an overreaction for a charging foul
I think it was about the defensive play right before his charge. He fouled SGA and it was careless. They just happened it cut to this shot after the second mistake of the charge.
It’s better to get yelled at when the team is already blowing them out. Imagine if he did this in a close game.
Exactly. Next time it may be a 4pt game. I don’t recall seeing rookies get lots of minutes this deep in the playoffs. I guess they’re the best option they have.
Bryant has a lot of potential. No NBA coach is doing that unless he believes rhe kid has big ability. Most would you just sit you and have assistant coach talk to you
He wasn’t about to cry. That’s not even screaming. Read his lips, he says “listen to me” at one point. He is reiterating something said at a previous point. That’s how coaches talk. A lot of you clearly have not played a sport before…
Somehow there’s a difference between this and Ime Udoka yelling at his guys and looking like he wants to fight them
Can he teach Kenny Atkinson how to do this? Asking for a friend 🥲
Aside from his stat line. Wemby showed great leadership in game 4. That’s the difference
He was a teenager just 6 months ago. A kid in a man’s game.
That’s normal.
He slapped the shit out of his back lol
You’re a rookie on a championship contending team. It’s tough. But it’s worth it.
Love that Wemby and Castle catch him after
Wemby is two years older than Bryant, wild
You gotta develop discipline and mental toughness.
Hope the young fella learned his lesson and will bounce back.
Really refreshing to see this kind of hard coaching normalized and celebrated. A lot of young guys need this, and our culture is making it more and more unacceptable for authority figures to be intense and confrontational in these types of settings.
Man how can you hate Wemby. The hug like a little kid says a lot about him
He definitely was fighting the tears
can anyone read lips lol I only caught Mitch saying “listen to me” and “wtf are you doing”
Victor Wembanyama (22)
Someone needed to do this to Suggs 3 years ago. Now he’s still playing like a dumbass.
Dudes been fcking up all series. Coach is just coaching him hard. “Yelling at him “…so what it doesn’t look like he called him out of his name he’s just coaching him and getting him to wake up and be better
I feel because Harper is doing so good as a rookie people forget this dude is also a rookie in the middle of frekin Conference Finals against the historically great OKC lol. Normal rookies are usually in bench for 2 years and he is getting baptized in hell 😂.
So easy to make mistakes against this OKC team too. Not trying to jerk, but they try every trick in the book, sly fouls, flopping, pressuring the officials.
Man I would so love for one of the leader to pat my back when I mess up huge. everyone’s trying to claim the corporate ladder so it’s every man for themselves. I’ll definitely do this when I’m a leader
Heart on his sleeve, man. We dont get to see shit like this every day.
Why play defense when you can just stand there and fall down at 7 feet tall. Go spurs go.
OKC have a deeper bench. SAS has to get some production out of a rookie who isnt really ready…he’s just an athlete figuring the game out still. He had a solid first game defensively but has been way too jumpy since. They need 4-5 good minutes from him a game defensively to give someone a rest and to try to hold leads, and he couldn’t do that last night. The coaching is there to help him in game 5 and 6.
This has been a bit overblown to me. Lots of articles and analysis about it today. He was making mental mistakes and coach needs him to recalibrate. Was the jersey tug and yelling the best look? Maybe not but it’s high stakes and decisions are made in real time. I didn’t see this part of the game but it looks like Mitch chewed him but left him in the game?
Carter clearly cares and wants to be part of why they are successful. So when you make mistakes like that and get reprimanded— that would definitely trigger emotion. Both of these teams really play for each other and no one wants to be the guy who let the team down. Speaks to the culture of both teams.
Love the passion on both sides. This is for all the marbles one error can cascade.
I can’t wait until this Spurs team wins a few titles so we can all find reasons to hate them too😐
I’m rooting for this kid. I think he is a solid defender.
I’ve coached varsity h.s. and in my opinion there is more than one way to bring the best out of your players. There are teachable moments in the game, that as a coach, you need to take advantage of. How you convey what you are trying to teach is crucial. Some players respond differently to different approaches and a coach should pick the right approach, at the right time and in the right place.
He look like a light skin Elon musk
Mitch you’re up 30 man relax lol
His iq just doesn’t fit the scheme right now he is still relying on all athleticism and no angels or insight..if they don’t give up on him he can be a good 6-7th man
“Pulled his jersey” is a bit of a click-bait stretch here
The rookie mistake is from the coach, not the player
He’s just frustrated with himself. He probably feels a bunch of pressure to be productive in some sense so every mistake he makes is amplified in his mind. He’s discipline himself eventually, but for now he gotta get through the growing pains.
I think different people are motivated different ways though. This may not be the right way to motivate him …
Nothing to worry about. Coaches yell at players because they know they can do better. Be worried when he stops yelling.
“screams at him” lol
Was scrolling too quickly and didn’t see the sub, thought this was el*n m*sk at first in the first frame got real confused
Wow
When did Elon Musk start coaching the spurs. 😂😂😂
Mitch Johnson kinda looks like a young Tiger Woods.
I want whatever you’re smokin man
is this headline AI written or are you just trying to bait here OP?
What are you on about?
title and description read as an AIs bad attempt at reading human interaction in a video transcription
because that isnt what happens here
This is just how he does titles. He got banned from the sub for writing clickbait, hot take titles at one point so now he writes “factual” titles to avoid moderation.
Its funny because that title is clickbait
How?
You’re obviously not aware of OP.
I am not
Got me confused too lol The announcer was literally sayin the yelling happened before the “rookie mistake.”
Yelling happened on the SGA pump fake into a foul where Bryant left his feet, iirc. This is the play after.
Basketbal sucks
This is a very young player that needs development. For the coach to show him up like that was lame. They may know he cam handle it bit that unfair from the outside.
You’re up 25. Calm TF down coach.
The Spurs will see lots of Finals, he’s coaching Carter Bryant for the future. I think Carter Bryant is very Danny Greenish, he’ll be dope, this will help.
This coach hasn’t done anything to establish himself, besides being gifted a generational talent in Wemby.
When he does something that deserves recognition, let me know.
He challenged his authority in front of the entire basketball team. He thinks he is doing this boy a favour by taking him aside every time he comes down on him, protecting him from ‘big bad Mitch,’ he is cutting his leg from under him.
No he’s not
