If we want to talk about “originally” he was an assistant under Larry Brown well before he was the GM. He worked his way up the organization before the move to HC. Then Pop himself was on the hot seat in ‘99 after a slow start too. People were clamoring for Doc Rivers to take his job. Doc was the color commentary guy for the Spurs at the time.
He fired the coach, became the coach, tanked the season, then in the next draft got some random guy named Tim Duncan.
