Nah tbh Brunson always hero balls the first game or 2 of the playoffs before he settles he’s done this in the first round since he’s been either us. If you’re looking at how teams defend him compared to the regular season, it’s night and day. They go full on let the rest of the team cook while we get the ball out of his hands. I hate Shai and all, but he seems to get targeted like this more (not some shai fanboy; least favorite player in the NBA genuinely; not kidding). Today, he was just dog, though. No excuses there. His shot quality (if you watch the games, this is very clear) is really down and that leads him to getting way harder shots. Pheonex doesn’t have a Castle level defender or the defensive system (plus wemby) to shut him down, so he played great there. The lakers just aggresivly doubled and tripled him so that explains it, and the spurs also doubled him for a while and they have wemby and great 1 on 1 defenders.

There’s another angle to this. In 2025 the defenses he played weren’t elite either. Kobe, Duncan had successive Finals with <50% ts% (in a different era) but those were against elite defense (the Ben Wallace Pistons).

Exactly! Don’t get me wrong SGA is a great player, but definitely not the best in the league. The depth and talent in OKC gives him so much room for error that no other star in the league gets. Even with J Dub and Ajay out they still have Chet, Caruso, Hartenstein, J Will, Cason Wallace, Lu Dort… all players any team in the NBA would love to have. An abundance of spacing that makes the court bigger and defense that lets him save his energy for offense. Jokic, Luka, Wemby, Giannis are all better players in my opinion. It’s just that their teams are NORMAL not bad in most cases but nowhere near the level of talent in OKC.

Honestly surprised Castle didn’t make a defensive team this year. But it was stacked all things considered. He’s successfully shut down pretty much every star perimeter scorer in the league, if I’m not mistaken.

As far as long wings giving SGA issues, that is true. Herb jones and Washington historically are others who give him the same issues but it’s really only Castle I’ve seen consistently stop SGA. Otherwise he’s untouchable usually.
