I dislike Shai as much as the next guy but him drawing double teams and creating 4 on 3 and 3 on 2 scenarios while still putting up his stats deep into the playoffs is absolutely insane. He’s an incredible player on an incredible run.

Someone teach this guy basketball. Shai is on the court when Wemby is on the court. Yeah ok OKc’s bench is better than spurs, that is true for most title favorites.

OKC is just winning bench minutes huge because it’s a historically good bench.

His stats are definitely worse this playoff run, but he’s also getting an absolutely insane amount of defensive attention. And despite that, he’s only averaging 1.4 less PPG, while increasing by nearly 2 assists per game, while still keeping an extremely low turnover rate with a very high usage. And his efficiency has somehow increased despite basically being doubled every possession.

Dropping 28.5 a game on 60.1% TS while every team’s defense is entirely selling out to stop you, so much so that your team is getting 49.4% of its three point looks classified as “wide open” per NBA stat tracking, is absurd.

And on top of that, his playmaking has been excellent, and he’s a plus defender.

Edit: Actually, they’re shooting 49.4% on those threes. They’re shooting an even more absurd 64.7% (77 of 119) of their three pointers wide open. I misread the original post.

this is a +14.2% increase in win % with him playing which is less than Shai in this two season sample size of team record

There’s a clear middle ground here. He’s great. He’s also on an elite team. And we should take that into account before we over-inflate his all-time ranking. The Thunder play at a 50 win pace the last two years when SGA is hurt.

I found out in those 15 minutes from another comment that OKC apparently has a better on/off without SGA on the court over the past 3 years in the playoffs.

The 6 seed won 49 games. They’d probably be in the 6-8 range without Shai.

And sure, they have a great team overall but they need an all time great player to be back to back champs. I don’t know how many current players you could place on that team and win 1-2 championships with. Maybe a few.
