I simultaneously hate the the way SGA plays while still being a fan of him as a dude and competitor. From what I’ve seen off the court, he’s seems like a great guy.
And the way he handles these kind of questions just reinforces that. He hears, understands and to some extent appreciates the noise/hate from us (fans). It fuels the game as a whole.
Still not a fan of his play style but other than that, I’m a fan of SGA the guy and competitor

He’s historically efficient, and an incredibly skilled player. He wins games, PERIOD. That’s all there is to say on the front, but with that being said, he is one of the least fun superstars in the league to watch play.
Historically in this type of situation the league lets people get bored then neuters the player with a rule change.
If he just hit the floor it honestly wouldn’t be THAT bad. It’s hooking the defenders arm and then going up as if he was the one impeded, or a go to move of a push off that consistently goes uncalled combined with hitting the floor at the first sign of contact
Those “chicken wing” pushoffs he does are 100% legal moves. At no point does he extend his arm into the defender.
Being one of the best drivers in the game, if you watch carefully, he usually gets the defender a bit off-balance and closer to his body. That’s where the chicken wing is super effective - a little elbow is enough to re-direct the defender away and create his space.
He’s also getting hand checked up and down the floor all the time. He can pushoff.
The chicken wing push offs feel wrong as a spectator but I get those are legal. My issue is that when a player is known to do something that pushes the boundaries of legality, refs tend to give them the benefit of the doubt when they do cross that line. It’s not just a Shai issue, I feel like that’s true across sports. Things like Pat Bev’s hand checking or the Eagles false starts/offsides on the tush push.
Pushoff for an “ankle breaker!!!!” and then jump into the defender trying to recover as they “go for the fake.” Guess they’re just supposed to let him shoot. Sadly the Spurs just need to hit the deck when he pushes off. He’s going to either make the shot or FTs. Might as well save the foul and hope they call the foul they call 2% of the time.
By rule not a push off
The hooking is a fair thing to hate him for. Tho I think hes not as obvious as Harden was in his heyday. For the most part its Shai feeling his arm is hooked and deciding to shoot just go draw the foul. Harden would actively slip his arms in between the defenders.
But I get why people hate it. I also think he got away with at least 2 full extension push offs last game. So that’s warranted hate, too.
The fall to the floor tho is an injury prevention move. Hes injured his ankles in the past and has taken the Curry strat of always falling in traffic to ensure you dont twist something when risking landing on an opposing player. Only like…2 falls a game I think are actual flops to get a call.

Actually surprised I’m seeing this comment in the wild. I recorded some videos, especially game 1, to share just for my group chats to show how much narrative affects our reactions.
Early in the game won’t be shooting baseline and Dort Taps him on the wrist and he’s flailing his hands on the shot (not saying the whistle shouldn’t have been blown, but it was obviously being super extra selling it).
Then a couple of plays after he puts his head into Chet while he is dribbling and loses his handle so he falls down and the refs call it.
To be clear, I don’t have a problem with either play. And I’m a big fan of both him and Shai, and both teams. But I just know if that was Shai doing the exact same movements they’d be mini viral moments.

As a Suns fan I love his mid game and his ability to change direction. He played beautiful ball last night picking apart San Antonio’s hard double teams and made crazy great passes that don’t show up on highlight reals.
The guy literally makes all of the right decisions and is a cut/paste from his mentor Chris Paul just with a bigger frame and better athleticism. Sure, he falls a lot but last night was not a game that you can say he got free throws “every time down the floor.” He literally didn’t shoot his first free throws until the third quarter.

Narratives are just stories that are used to sell or hype the game. Too much negative algorithm pressure on social media feeds has a large section of the “fans” believing they are highly regarded experts, who should be upset at the game from every angle and essentially turn from fans to straight up haters, hate watching and outrage farming.
