You either use it legitimately or you use it sarcastically, but it works well for both scenarios

This drives me crazy but the real problem is that it poses causation going the wrong direction. “X played well/poorly despite the loss/win” is incoherent. The loss/win came “despite” how X played, not the other way around

The other thing that bugs me is that a lot of “despite the loss” posts are backwards.

The team can lose despite a player’s good game, but a player doesn’t have a good game despite the team’s loss.

The team’s win or loss is not a cause of the player’s individual performance.

I know I’m tilting at windmills here.
