I think this gets closer to what the issue is with Shai’s foulbaiting. Tons of players foulbait. But falling to the ground is aesthetically unpleasing. People can argue that aesthetics don’t matter, but they clearly do. People like the aesthetics of dunking on someone even though it’s just two points. People like MJ’s hang-time and the ability to switch hands while in mid-air. People like the beauty of Shai’s mid-range shot. So when he falls on the ground trying to draw a foul call, not only do people dislike it because of the perceived unfairness, it’s also the aesthetics. It’s not fun to watch.

Its important do study things that seem true so you can have data and do analysis. Assuming something is true because it feels true is dangerous and can kead to many wrong assumptions. This kind of analysis whoch goes in depth and finds and analyzes data is key to advancing science… err uh, basketball? Good breakdown though lol.

I wonder if there is a way to better determine a flop from a fall to protect his ankles. a couple players do fall after a shot to prevent the load on their ankles when landing. For example curry does this often. Embiid does something similar where some of his falls look like him just not trying to land on something that’s gonna explode for him. This would check out since Sga has had ankle issues iirc so it would check out. But similar to Embiid he does also fall to try to draw fouls too.

Maybe you can consider direction where the fall is? All of the ankle falls are usually falling backwards. While falls forward always seem to be a flop. But you also can’t say all backward falls are ankle ones…

I’d be interested in a few stats. Falling to the ground, the head snap, and the arm lock. Those 3 moves are SGA’s bread and butter. Torepdo into defender, throw ball up, hit ground…. run into defender, snap head back, throw up shot…. or hook defenders arm, flail around, then throw ball up.
