[Highlight] Victor Wembanyama blocks Chet Holmgren under the rim, gets called for the foul (3rd foul), and the Spurs use their second and last challenge to successfully overturn it.
3rd block for Wemby.
With replays.
The fact that you lose your challenges even if you win them is a travesty
Not just lose a challenge, lose a timeout too lmao
We were wrong but here you go, lose two very valuable things
I mean if the refs were good, I’d be fine with this setup but they are egregious. This shit is unwatchable.
Under no circumstance does it make sense to lose a challenge on a successful challenge. If they were good, running out of challenges would be a non issue but the possibility of running out of challenges is just insanely stupid. You get punished for the refs fucking you over.
In a different sport I watch (cricket) it you review an umpire decision and it’s overturned you retain the review. Would have thought the NBA would be all for more timeouts and ad revenue.
The NBA knows that such a large amount of calls will be reviewed that it’ll add literal hours on to the length of games, making them more unwatchable
That would only occur if the calls were constantly wrong. You should get one review. If you are correct you don’t lose it and can challenge another call. If the calls stands you lose it. The only way a game would have literal hours added is if you kept getting the challenge correct. Only going to happen if the refs are horrendous.
The calls are consistently wrong
Nfl and baseball are the same
I agree but if the refs were accurate the majority of the time, having a limited amount of challenges would not be a significant issue
But the refs are so disgustingly bad and possibly corrupt that the game is basically broken. The challenge mechanism doesn’t help much when the game is called so egregiously.
If the Thunder win it all this year playing like this, I will stop wasting my time watching NBA.
I am Spurs fan but like this Knicks squad so wouldn’t mind seeing them win this year either.
Losing a challenge and a timeout is without a doubt an issue even if the majority of the time refs are accurate. It’s punishing you three times. Once for the bad call, then the challenger, and finally the timeout.
How petty do you have to be to stop watching a sport because of a team you dont like wins the league. I don’t like the Celtics or the Lakers, yet I can still watch it.
tony brothers experience
Can’t believe the NBA tracks which ref calls the whistle but doesn’t actually use it for anything.
Should get a pay cut for every 4 post-game corrected calls.
Just ask Teague
Even if the refs were good, I’m not okay with this setup. If a team successfully challenges 30x in a row, I say let them. Not that 30 challenges would’ve been enough against OKC tonight
I think the point of limiting challenges is for time reasons. A couple bad calls can turn the direction of the game. But when its officiated so abysmally I don’t see the point anymore. That’s not even real basketball. Rules need to be enforced.
Have you ever tried to referee? It’s hard as shit.
The reality is these refs are good. This is what peak refereeing looks like. Turns out it’s crazy hard to get every call right when you don’t have the benefit of slow-mo, instant replay, and zoom.
I just looked it up, the nba challenge success rate for fouls is about 50⁄50. If these refs were really so bad you would expect this to be more like 80 or 90%.
They should let you keep the timeout if you win. And you should get some amount of extra challenges if you keep being right.
Game 1 of the wcf had the best ratings in conference finals history so a lot of people are enjoying watching it. It’s fine if you don’t enjoy it and say it’s unwatchable but stop complaining and just don’t watch it
I see you getting downvoted under every post lol
You must be losing so much time answering to people, but I guess your brain is just wired different if you think everything imwas ok in this game
I’ve been coming on this sub for over a decade to discuss basketball. Had kind of given up on having good discussion in here and haven’t frequented it as much. Last night I didn’t have anyone to discuss with during or after the game. All the most upvoted posts were just people complaining about the game.
I tried to discuss the game in here and realized it was a bad idea. Don’t see many other thunder flairs in here either so I think I’m one of the few thunder fans that still looked to this sub to talk basketball. I probably took longer to give up discussing here than other Thunder fans cuz I’ve been in this sub for so long.
Yeah and game one wasn’t bogged down by flops and whistles. Wish the NBA would give us more of that.
Gotta lose it so one can’t disrupt the script too much
Well they have mandatory timeout periods so blame the broadcasting companies for that 😂
You lose a timeout even if you win the challenge? wtf? Even the mlb has gotten challenges right. Pick your shit up Silver!!!
i think challenges should be 1 per quarter tbh.
And they should keep them if they are proven correct.
keep 1 but that’s it. cant have every calls get challenged.
If they’re wrong they lose the challenge and a time out. I think that’s fair.
If the refs don’t want to have them constantly challenge calls then they can just call the game more consistently.
As long as we speed up the challenge process. Replay will show a dude knocking the ball out of bounds while holding a sign saying “It’s off me” and it’s at least a ten minute break.
Would you shut up for one second, and think of the advertising? What the hell is amazon going to do unless we know they deliver stuff?
Waitwaitwait…Amazon delivers??? I’ve been going to these warehouses to pick up vitamins, energy drinks, and the 4k release of Robocop for nothing?
Ah, shit. Nah, you’re good. These guys only have the 4k release of Robocop (2014). No worries.
Would be stupid. It should be keep the challenge if its correct.
helll no, fuck all challenges entirely. These two are egregiously wrong* and thats more indicative of just dog shit refs which when everyone going in knows the refs name its usually just gonna happen.
They need to actually hold refs accountable, move on from shit tier ones, and keep game pace. The worst part of the current NBA product is all the stoppage. That comes in the way of too many timeouts, and too many fouls.
The main problem with the challenges is the length. Have it be handled by a large team of individuals off-site looking at all possible angles; make the decision quickly, and move on.
NBA has so much money, pay more referees. If we can have enough referees for 4 games back to back, we can get 12 referees for one game.
Each time a ref got a call wrong, sub him.
No way ref unions go for this
How come MLB got it right in their first year of challenge (ABS), but the NBA didn’t?
If they are afraid of long game, fix the ref too.
It’s a way bigger deal what you challenge in the MLB. I think in the MLB you might want even more challenges, but they didn’t wanna go too crazy early.
MLB is also pretty empirical in terms of what is wrong vs right in terms of the call. In the NBA it’s a contact sport so there is some leeway, and it takes longer to do reviews as they have to make sure there is or isn’t contact. So it’s much shorter for reviews in MLB vs NBA, and I think that time is important for the NBA. I don’t agree with it, but I think that’s why.
I think it should be 1 per quarter and it should be reviewed by a separate team of officials like they do in MLB (I think?). That way it won’t take 30 minutes per challenge.
Can’t keep showing up the refs man, game would take forever
Wouldn’t happen if the league actually put an emphasis on competent reffing.
Agree it’s absolute madness given how well this works in tennis.
Teams should get to keep challenges if proven correct. Each ref should have 3 strikes. If a call is challenged succesfully then that’s a strike on the ref. 3 strikes and the ref is out, then we bring in the bench refs.
They have to do it because the refs get so many calls wrong that they’d be challenging every other call
Agreed. You should get to keep challenging until you lose.
It’s to stop games from being 8 hours long being the refs get so much wrong
I’m not condoning it I don’t like the rules either
Litterally got downvoted for giving the exact reason
But now Spurs can’t challenge anything for an entire half. Without 2 challenges Wemby would now have 4 fouls and unable to play his natural game. How is this fair?
Yeah it’s been an issue I’ve had since they implemented challenges. I don’t know how to fix it. Maybe you get challenges after 2 till you get one wrong? Idk
Downvotes for agreeing with the post.
Then maybe the ref shouldn’t get so much stuff wrong
The whiplash from the incredible Game 1 officiating to this shit is crazy. OKC fans chanting “refs you suck” while their team gets away with holding fouls on almost every play is hilarious
I just watched Isaiah Joe throw himself to the ground while Harrison Barnes just stood there and Tony Brothers fell for it and gave OKC the call
He didn’t fall for shit, he was looking for any reason to give OKC the call
Are we sure Caruso didn’t tell him to make the call?
If they are willing to give techs on command it stands to reason this may be the case here, too.
that was egregious lmao
Flopping is supposed to be a foul too but here we are. Too much money involved to risk it going potentially 4 games
FTA’s are tied but it couldn’t be more obvious that Thunder are getting away with a massive amount of fouls. One of the Castle coast to coast drives where he missed I think he got fouled 3 times down the court and crickets. That was bad
This is what’s wrong with “analysis” and what people say about OKC not leading NBA in FTA. It’s the nonquantifiable assault they throw on the players and it’s not called
The adjustment thunder made from game 1 to 2 was literally to foul more and flop more. Thats it.
And it worked, tony brothers is the mvp this game.
Republicans booing Mitch McConnell type shit
Oklahoma education at its finest
They make it too easy to bring up their education all the time
I never understood why other Americans bring this up. Compared to global averages every state in the U.S. is ranked poorly in education.
Yeah you might have gotten a better grade than us but bro we are both in special ed. Have some self awareness.
Mind you game 1 officiating was incredible because the spurs won. That game had a lot of missed calls. And I would not say it was balanced either.
Wemby was about to have more fouls than Hartenstein if not for the challenges
Hartenstein is fouling Wemby on literally every single possession and somehow only has 3 fouls
the moment he fouls out of the game, Wemby is going to go nuclear
You were too naive to think the refs would ever call Ihart’s fouls to foul out
please post that “foul” on barnes that erased a champagnie 3
That was unreal LOL. Was Barnes even moving?
I think he breathed in their general direction
He was thinking impure thoughts.
no, that was a trademark OKC flop. This is what they are coached to do
Barnes needed to argue that more, he acted like he just fouled someone
To be fair, it was a moving screen and Barnes accepted it but man, Joe flopped so hard on that
It wasn’t even close to a moving screen he just flopped
Man stood there real menacingly tbf. Menacing is actually a crime in virtually all jurisdictions. Lucky not to be arrested.
One of the most egregious flops ive ever seen
I don’t know why I even watched that clip again, it’s just pure unadulterated rage bait
And then the 3 that McCain hit while hackenstein pulled castle’s hair under the rim. Just unreal stuff going on.
Is it really “erased” when it was shot like 2 seconds after the whistle wide open lol
This game has been so lopsided officially for OKC. Tons of missed calls and no calls in favor of them, and now the Spurs have had to waste TWO challenges in the first half. Just unbelievable.
That cason wallace flop to rule out a 3 from Champagnie was UNREAL. Did harrison even touch him?
was isaiah joe, but yea, embarrassing call
Wasn’t that Joe? That sh is hilarious, refs saw 1 neutral game and said nope! Okc it is!
That was Isaiah Joe. He’s a damn twig. 6’4, 160. Can’t tell if he flopped or he’s just that tiny.
Spurs just had a Champagnie 3 waved off because Isaiah Joe flopped off absolutely nothing too
shits so rigged, Tony Brothers is awful
Bring back the refs from the other game. This some bullshit
Meanwhile Hartenstein is putting Wemby in a masterlock in every play
I don’t understand how you lose a challenge for the ref’s mistake
You just have two challenges, what you risk is the timeout.
The nba wants to limit challenges which is fine, but they’re created a game where both challenges had to get used in the first half to overturn shitty calls because they give a ton of shitty calls to one team, and that is embarrassing.
Challenges should be unlimited until you get one wrong. If that slows down the game it’s the refs fault and they should be dealt with. Honestly I think it would improve reffing. They just don’t want the microscope on all the terrible calls.
But then the refs just say you got that wrong on the first one and boom, no more challenges.
You can’t have unlimited, it’s not feasible. It’s bad enough every player begs for a review after a call and 99% of the time they committed the foul.
It should be a sky judge kind of thing. I really don’t think it would be a problem. People will get stuff wrong and the challenge will be gone. Occasionally it would highlight atrocious reffing in a good way. Like this game, Spurs could have used a bunch more challenges. The flop that took away the 3 by Jules would have been an easy overturn.
I wouldn’t mind similar rules to the nfl, or maybe restocking a challenge in the second half.
So you get two challenges, and a third if one is successful. And if you lost one or two challenges in the first half you get a challenge restocked in the second half
Yes you fucking can. See: tennis.
Ah yes, a sport with two people not touching each other following a single object back and forth…
Not quite the same as 5v5 with the ball cycling between players with off ball contact happening constantly….
But spurs lose the right to challenge for the rest of the game for correcting the refs…
Insane that they won both and get no more. No way should that be the case
Referees gonna do everything for the Thunder
Why do they do that?
its crazy you lose the challenge for getting it right, have to do the refs job for them constantly
Not only the challenges, but the timeouts too!
Wolves had a game last round that they successfully challenged twice but lost a timeout both times. Ran out of timeouts in a 2 possession game with more than 2 minutes left when there should have been 2 more.
Spurs lose 2 timeouts because of officials being wrong in a close game like this. Not even upset with the officiating (ok I am), but if officials get called on a bad callight they shouldnt cut a to for a team who is right
The refs ruined this game.
Can’t challenge for the rest of the game because you had to use them to overturn TWO bad calls. So stupid.
Tony Brothers doing the Lord’s work. Now the Spurs don’t have a challenge so the rigging in favor of OKC is in.
Without the 2 successful challenges, Wemby would have more fouls than Hartenstein who is grabbing and holding on every play, fuck these refs!
Thunder fans are dumb as fuck. “Ref you suck” when literally they are their 6th man.
Refs are doing a shitty ass job
I swear the NBA can officiate games well when they want to - this shit is not accidental
Spurs just lost 2 challenges. Otherwise Wemby would now be foul trouble with 4 fouls. This is the most rigged extender game ig. Refs have been ASS.
That is Wemby’s 2nd block on Chet so far this series (the other one was just 30s earlier). Incidentally, Chet has blocked Wemby twice as well so they are tied.
Spurs played 5 on 8 and only lost by 9. F tony brothers.
this league is such a joke sometimes man
Most of the time. It’s really getting to a WWE level of rigged results and outcomes and story lines.
Ref ruins a great match.. .again
Thank you for pointing out our fault, as a reward you dont get to challenge our fault anymore and you lose 2 timeout.
Braindead logic, challenge has always been whack since its inception. Why punish a team for successfully overwrite an incorrect call?
The NBA wants to keep this series competitive. Spurs would sweep them in a fair series
Successful challenges should not use them up
Either a 3rd foul on wemby or lose a timeout.
Its lose-lose for the spurs for correcting the refs mistake
The rule should be if you use your challenge and it’s successful you don’t lose it
At this point, just maul the fuck out of the Thunder as well if they’re gonna get the call anyway. Have them a taste of their own medicine
Chet forgot to fall down.
So if you win a challenge the second time, why should the team be punished by taking the challenge and time out away?
Anyone who believes the refs don’t treat the Thunder with kid gloves should just watch this game on repeat until they are ready to accept reality.
Man is 8 vs 5 out there tonight
Tony Brothers masterclass
Unethical basketball. OKC plays with “not touching you” energy.
Just casually last resort blaring in the background
It’s wild how prevalent that song still is. Not just because it’s a fucking nu-metal song from the early 00s… but it’s a song about suicide lol
It’s so crazy when you actually listen to the lyrics as they’re played over footage of a fucking basketball game.
We can’t have a 4 game conference finals series. Where’s the profit in that?
Clean
Refs saved okc
This is something I understand missing in real time. Wemby blocks it clean, but then his arms tangle with Chet’s. From the ref’s angle I completely understand it.
It was over when the league sent in Brothers to this game.
okc doing the ‘go ahead call every screen illegal’ tactic of golden state dynasty and the ‘go ahead call every block a holding call’ of the seattle seahawks of 2010s.
this one should be called ‘go ahead and challenge it…oh u got no more challenges left? whoopsie.’
I think I’m done with the NBA. This is just stupid at this point. I thought last season was bad, this season is a travesty.
Sucks that Spurs lose both challenges even though they were successful. Could’ve used more throughout the game.
Spurs need unlimited challenges in this series cuz damn OKC is playing so dirty
WWE
I’m not the most basketball adept person but in this clip does SGA not also pushoff/shoulder into the defender and travel?
This is now the second series the refs have obviously called a one sided game so OkC can avoid being majorly down in a series wtf
The ref is right there. Wtf u seeing?
This should have resulted in a jump ball. Instead they gave the Spurs the ball. Another break for the Spurs.
Who cares about the whistle, the Spurs took 40+ 3s, deserved to lose.
The spurs took 40 3 point attempts and the thunder took 36…they essentially took the same amount but you’re bother by the spurs 4 extra?
