I’d say Brunson is a little better on D than harden but by much. But the effort is always there and he’s never shy about giving his body up to stop momentum.
Brunson is limited by his lack of size and foot speed but like you said he’s going to try at the minimum, scramble and take a charge then letting a guy walk to the hoop.
Effort alone usually means you’re still in the right spots so I take that over Harden.
Whenever there’s a mismatch and his teammates tell him to scram switch Brunson is on it and quickly switches. These are the little things that can get you so far.
They’re both bad defenders but Jalen is willing to be a good defender if the opportunity arises, he’s just limited by his size and speed. When he can try to take a charge or slow down a drive he will do it.
Harden has no interest in defense as a concept aside from mashing the steal button in his brain every once in a while. When the opportunity arises for Harden he is annoyed by it.

If you look at his defensive numbers like in spurts, he’s been actually been really good on defense throughout the years. You just assume he isn’t good at defense because players like that normally aren’t but he’s physical and he has really great moments on defense that I’ve seen with my own 2 eyes - also he’s top of the league in charges drawn every year and those are defensive possession ending plays oftentimes drawing them late in the game.
“Really good” on defense is a bit exaggerated though. He’s not a terrible defender but he still gets hunted regularly.

Brunson just has no margin for error because of his physical limitations. He has to be pitch perfect in nailing the timing of his recoveries in order to be just a tick below average. But you can live with that when he’s a goddamned maestro in the regular season and becomes a basketball clutch god in the playoffs.
The Knicks have been better about not giving up the screen immediately with Brunson in the pick and roll often by having the help defender show hard to make the switch difficult to pull off

I think they had this exploit primarily because Harden was tired and the Cavs didn’t adjust. I’d bet with some simple adjustments they could have stopped it, but they trusted Harden for some reason. Won’t pretend I have all the answers but it definitely seems odd that Harden was getting cooked so clearly and the Cavs did nothing to adjust.
