When Masai took over the Raptors he didn’t completely clean house. He retained Colangelo’s analytics team but he brought on his own managerial staff like his best bud Jeff. He also honoured previous agreements like Nick Nurse who Casey was in the process of hiring before BC got canned iirc.But I assume some people may want to explore their own opportunities as well.

Nico had beef w/ Luka because his wife supposedly was a huge huge Luka fan. In addition, Luka didn’t respect him too much and Nico then went on a huge power trip that led to the trade.

Trading Luka wasn’t a bad move. The return just wasn’t enough.

Just rip the bandaid off. Hire a young guy who can grow with Flagg long term.

Kidd wants more power. After Nico got fired, he put his name in for the GM role. He wants to move to the front office. He tried to gain power at previous stops and got pushed out,so it was a matter of time him and Masai would butt heads. Get it over with now and move on.

Also, whenever Mavs saw the Lakers this year, Luka talked to everyone except Kidd so lots of speculation he had a hand in the trade as well.

Apparently Kidd and Masai have history so it was never going to work out.

I honestly think there’s no story to tell. Nico saw Boston run Luka off the court, didn’t think he’d get serious, and didn’t want to supermax him.

One thing I know for sure is that the tone of commenters when AD is dealing with injuries is a lot different than when Luka is dealing with injuries, even though part of the rationale for getting off Doncic was because his body is crumbling. I always felt the trade had some basketball merit, but the discourse around it has always been reactionary trash. You still can’t have a real conversation about it.

It was a business and PR disaster, and I think that’s probably what Dallas really underestimated. You don’t need to take the risk of trading your bankable superstar when people will happily buy jerseys and tickets if he’s on the team. The lazy and safe business move is not to rock the boat.

To make a comparison, Denver could trade Jokic for a monster package and maybe win the deal in the long-term, but why risk that when you can just roll him out there and ensure a certain level of competitiveness? If you finish in the 6 seed and go out in the first round, fans will line up to ride the rollercoaster again next season.

Luka isn’t as good as Jokic, but is good enough to give you the pretense of contending, and keeps the fans engaged. They blew up a lot of brand value for a narrow chance at a better basketball outcome, which is bad business. I say that as someone who likes the trade more than almost anyone else not named Nico.
