Kirk Goldsberry shares that the league’s official player-tracking system tagged Wembanyama’s clutch 3 point shot distance at 32.3 feet, which was the longest make of his career (play-by-play data has it at 28 feet; video via @RingerNBA)
Thought it was weird when they said 28-footer on the broadcast, definitely looked further
I like Reggie as a person… probably because he mountain bikes, but he is so annoying as an announcer
He was probably reading it off the play by play that OP referenced. Reggie’s been fine this playoffs and has improved so much in the last 5-10 years
Im not a Reggie on commentary guy. I thought he, Crawford and Tirico were excellent last night. The broadcast had a few problems but it wasnt them.
I agree, reffing and commentary were great last night. Helped that we had a game that lived up to the hype
Exactly! And to the subs credit, its been quiet on both fronts. Usually next day is nothing but complaints.
I wonder if it would be the same if OKC won. I unfortunately think people would be complaining way more if that was the result. Even though nothing would have changed but the result.
He used to be so negative, like he was bitter about not playing or something. But he’s lightened up and been better.
Good point, probably mostly just doing what he is told. It kind of annoys me how much they go on and on about how great the stars are too, Doris might be the worst at this though. But it is like, I am watching the game, tell me something with your vast experience and sports knowledge that I can’t see with my eyes.
news flash, whatever she knows you know. this goes for basically everyone except the real, true greats of announcing and former players.
I mean I assume they know more about offensive rotations, defensive schemes, strategy and stuff like that. Then I believe they get to sit down with players during practice so they could share little tidbits from that more often. Maybe I am just spoiled with the local broadcast team in Portland. Wouldnt surprise me if Lamar Hurd got into coaching… and Calabro always got random stories he throws in. Shoot even Bill Walton added so much back when he anointed for the “greatest conference on earth”… RIP to both.
i wish there was a channel of basketball that was announcing but only about the stuff you mentioned. like they were analyzing the game. id pay for a network that just did that. i would want them to tell me what to look at in terms of where holes in defense may be or something like that. i wouldnt even need it to be entertaining, just straight ball
Yeah and that won’t be real entertaining for casual fans but I think they could mix more of that into the broadcast. Seems like there’d be a market for what you suggest though, I’d watch it too.
agreed. i would also love if some journal or blog site picked up just asking players strategic basketball questions in post game pressors. i really do not give a fuck about “the mentality going in” because its the same fuckin answers. ask them about a specific play that seemed to be working every time and how they used it to get a majority of buckets before the opposing coach called a TO. SOMETHING
Agreed… although I think a lot of players would be pretty coy about some a the strategy stuff but I think you’d still get some interesting tales from time to time. I guess this kind of stuff doesn’t sell but it sure seems like there’d be some market for it
She knows more than me, I guarantee it.
I muted the TV before halftime because I couldn’t listen to him any longer.
I’ll take Reggie corniness over RJ’s trying hardedness.
I saw Reggie at the bike store once!
I also mute him a lot.
Play by play is an old american dude eyeballing length
You people cant even get your own height right
What if we had a big like Giannis who could shoot like Curry
And what if you made it so that the height difference between him and Giannis is the same as Giannis and Tyler Herro
Holy shitfuck
Sure buddy, get off 2k, that would never happen
What if we had a big like Giannis who could shoot like Curry, defend better than The Dream, finish like prime Shaq, mentally mature like Duncan and as focused as Kobe..
If his durability is even quarter of Lebron’s, league is royally fudged..
??? shoot like Curry? Finish like Shaq? Bruh don’t make up stupid shit
In 2K I once made Beno Udrih 7’11 but forgot to raise his dunk slider so he got called for basket interference whenever I tried to lay it up.
first of all. Why? second of all. lol
The biggest thing for me is his free throw shooting. Imagine if shaq and wilt shot at least 70% from the stripe. Well now you don’t need to.
Hack-A-Shaq was a thing. Shaq lost a few thousand career points because of his horrendous free throw shooting.
Scenarios like these is why I believe we haven’t seen the greatest player of all time yet. I think it would be a cross between Wemby and Jokic.
I think everyone was in shock when Wemby pulled up and made that shot. If you’re the Thunder, you let him take that shot all day. Outside of Curry, you let any shooter standing way beyond the arc make that shot so you don’t even defend it. To make it worse, Wemby had Caruso guarding him. He could’ve taken that ball right up to the 3-point line, set his feet, and shoot as if he weren’t even being guarded.
Emotionally and momentum-wise, that is exactly what the Spurs needed. Score an easy 2-pointer, and OKC takes their sweet time running out the clock with a 1-point lead just exchanging free throws with the Spurs. That’s the only justification for a tired Wemby who just scrambled up the court to take that “Hail Mary” shot.
That’s exactly why he shot it from that far. They were going to throw the kitchen sink at him the moment he got into his offensive set. This is the EXACT reason Curry used to shoot so deep routinely, because he could get a wide open shot, knowing he was going to get grabbed, shoved, doubled, blitz, ANYTHING, the moment he takes a step closer.
Of course, the big difference is, we all know Curry can hit that. I think only Wemby in that moment knew he could hit that. The mindset and confidence is unreal. He had to believe that the longest shot in his career was the best chance his team had to win, and he delivered. The calm shuffle away was the cherry on top. Career highlight.
All that plus the shot clock. He needed to shoot it right then and there so the Spurs would have the final possession, in case they needed a few seconds to score at the end
I don’t think the Spurs were thinking about getting an extra possession. If Wemby misses that shot and OKC gets the rebound, OKC will be fouled trying to run out the clock. If OKC makes one free throw, they will be up by 2 scores. Game over.
The reason he took the shot was because Chet fell on the preceding play and so the spurs were favored for the rebound.
He could’ve taken that ball right up to the 3-point line, set his feet, and shoot as if he weren’t even being guarded.
Not at all, the more you can jump forward the easier a shot is, even if a guy can’t block it. Having a foot of space to jump forward into makes a shot much easier than having to jump straight up and down.
Wemby didn’t even use any forward momentum to help push the ball from that distance. He looked like he was making a free throw, but from 30 feet out. Same motion - set his feet, and almost vertical.

He absolutely lands 2ft ahead of where he jumps, not possible if a guy is close to him https://imgur.com/a/JNAWWv8

I think players are taught to lean forward on their jumpers just to get a foul call. He knew he wasn’t getting any contact. It was a practice shot, but even practice shots from 30 feet out are low percentage shots.
Have you ever shot a basketball? You naturally want your momentum to go forward vs jumping up straight and down.
Yes, because your legs do help to elevate the ball. But that’s not an amateur out there. That basketball is as light as a tennis ball to NBA players. Pro athletes jump to keep from getting blocked.
I live in Germany
I have been watching sports my whole life
What I am seeing I have never before in any Sport
He has me staying up until 5am on normal work days, I wouldnt miss a Wemby Game for anything
Hell yeah.
League fucked for real.
The announcers kept calling it a 28 footer but it definitely looked deeper than that, glad that suspicion was validated
Of course it was. This guy’s ceiling is sky high. I really can’t wait to see how much he grows. He’s going to make casual fans tune in even more to get their minds blown about what he’s doing in professional basketball
his ceiling better be sky high otherwise how would he stand
I’ve accepted that I want this guy to fulfill the potential he seems to have, even if that means we don’t get to a finals for the next 10 years. In the end, hoops are hoops and if a guy that loves the game and has a functioning brain has to be the goat, so be it.
Shades of Tim Duncan hitting that Dagger against the Suns out of nowhere in 2008
wemby the kind of player they make urban legends about like wilt chamberlain. bruce lee, chuck norris type silly shit but also somehow believable.
Shit made me yell at my TV so loud 😂
I yelled silently as to not wake the wife
Not good enough. He needs to get back in the gym so he can start working on half court 3’s.
Are they measuring from the toe or heel of his shoe? Could explain the disparity
i don’t think that’s true, he’s definitely made shots just as far as that before during his sophomore year when he was shooting a ton of deep 3s
They were usually in the middle of the court though. This one is pretty far on the side which makes it longer than it looks.
Also, I’m pretty sure the logo here is smaller than when he used to do it often which also makes the shot look closer than it is.
Anyway, if you see the data they show, yes it’s his furthest one, but not by much.
The second I saw JDub shoot that garbage midrange jumper and Wemby pull up from deep is when I realised this man is genuinely on GOAT trajectory
That was Neo stopping the agents’ bullets on the hallway type stuff. He is The One.
Love the fact that Reggie Miller still trips up over the same players names every single time. The consistency in that is remarkable.
Kirk, enough with the unbiased professionalism! Who are you really rooting for!?
I heard it was 50
I mean what the fuck bro
I have no stats to back it up but that left wing area seems to be his spot. I’ve watched quite a few games following this spurs team and he always seems to make em in that left wing or top of the key. Never from that distance though.
With all due respect Reggie Miller needs to get fired
