Wemby with his best Curry impression
The fact that he hit this in hostile territory in the WCF in his FIRST playoff run is absolutely insane to me.
I think the fact he didn’t even hesitate is insane, he is like the opposite of Ben Simmons doesn’t give a fuck and pissed he didn’t win by 20
To be fair to Ben Simmons, elite defender Trae Young wasn’t guarding Wemby like he was Ben Simmons.
This is suppose to be a safe space for me
Wemby seems to be one of the most mentally prepared players out there. Best vs worst in that category.
Not even like he had the hot shooting hand from deep, he only had 2 attempts and made this one. Insane confidence and it kinda broke the OKC crowd
The fact that Curry hit that and celebrated, and Wemby just got back like “you just gave me a shootaround shot”
tbf wemby hit it to tie, not to win, and still had 20+ seconds to defend after.
Wemby just got back like “you just gave me a shootaround shot”
It’s Game 1 of a playoff series, with time remaining vs a regular season game with no time left basically
He’s gott he Tim Duncan mentality.
The confidence is scary.
This feels like random regular season “ahh fuck it might as well try”, but doing that in this moment is scary.
Wemby is a mentality monster.
While being absolutely exhausted as the offensive and defensive linchpin of his team against the world champs. Otherworldly performance
His only 3 of the game too
Have seen it 4 different times today, I still can’t believe he took that and made that. It’s outrageously ballsy, I can’t wrap my mind around it.
That was his first made 3 in the game. Wild af
The crowd was roaring, and that really took the air out of the building. He missed that shot, OKC probably comes out with the win
Even more ballsy if you consider that if Wemby misses it’s OKC ball, Spurs will probably have to foul putting OKC out of range and that’s game.
If Curry missed they would have gone to 2OT and the game goes on
The balls on Wemby for that shot
Not to mention Currys wasnt in the playoffs
Not to mention Wemby hadn’t hit a three all game.
This is one of those moments where I feel like an athlete just has something take over them and they are just not missing.
Guaranteed if Wemby had taken time to set his feet near the line, he doesn’t make the shot. This is just pure instinct in the moment and it sank
Idc if OKC ends up coming back, this game 1 was legendary and is the birth of a future potential GOAT
Nah, I don’t want any repeat champs over these last 8 seasons, BRING ON THE PARITY.
I’m all aboard SAS or NYK making EIGHT straight different champions. We’ve never seen parity like this in the history of the league.
I have really enjoyed the parity over the past several seasons, but it looks like we might be at the end of it.
Spurs 3 peat? sign me tf up
When you got bulls fans saying this, you know something has truly happened
Watching Wemby play is a religious experience
As a fellow Bulls fan, sign me up too!
I totally get what you are saying but you might be rooting for the beginning of an insane dynasty
We’ll cross that bridge when we’re here, same time next year lol
something take over them
He did say in the postgame presser that he was sort of unconscious at that point, or rather, not thinking (verbatim). Prolly reached flow state.
Buddha take the wheel
It’s one of those moments that matter and elevate a players legacy. An instantly iconic play; you can close your eyes 10 years from now and see that exact shot replay in your head
Not to take a dig sga, but he’s yet to have one of those moments.
Wdym, after last years finals I’ll be seeing sga’s flopping face for a lot longer than 10 years whenever i close my eyes
That’s the mode I feel LeBron was in at the end of that 2018 game. No doubt in my mind if JR Smith gets a pass over to him that LeBron ices it.
That is bonkers 😅
lol reminds me of duncans 3 vs suns in 08 first round first game.
dude had something like 4 3 pointer attempts that season, missed them all. then made one in double overtime to win the game.
True but for the Warriors at that time of the season, every game was like a playoff game as they were going for the record wins in a season. The Warriors were 52-5 and could only lose 4 of their next 25 to break the regular season record.
Every game was like the playoffs when you’re chasing 73 wins
People said that shot sent KD to the Warriors tho
OKC choking a 3-1 lead sent KD to the Warriors
Boy did that game feel like a playoff game though. My god those Thunder Warriors games were fun
The fact that Curry’s is so well remembered despite being a mostly meaningless game is part of his legend. We’re used to it now but he was such a phenomenon at the time that this became arguably the most famous regular season game of all time.
I was disgusted by the shot and then it went in
Yeah, it was such a “What the fuck…?! WHAT THE FUCK?!” moment
When it happened I saw a couple guys on the okc bench smile out of disbelief
Where’s Paul George at?
it felt like a minor miracle that okc was able to score 7 straight to take that 3 point lead in OT. It took everything for them to claw back – and then wemby just pulls up from 30 feet to tie it. legendary
There was a very similar 3 that was many years ago when they were down 3 in OT and Tim Duncan of all people shot a three: https://youtu.be/trdsKp94Io0
He only had 5 playoff threes his entire career too
Yeah, he was like a career 17% shooter from the three, too, though I’d imagine that a lot of them were end of shot clock chucks that really shouldn’t count. But Suns left him too open for that shot, heh.
Given the time left on the clock he was definitely going for a 2 for 1 opportunity.
Well idk, a 2 for 1 is great when there’s more game to play.
You probably looking at relentless intentional fouls instead the “1” part, if OKC scores.
Yea that was a frickin gamble. If he missed that, we’d be seeing Denzel Valentine memes on the timeline.
He was going for a 2 for 1, right?
Double bang tho
Also you have to consider the time period of Steph’s shot. Nobody was shooting it that far. Logo shots wasn’t a thing back then. Steph didn’t really unleash the logo shot until that season. That was a truly WTF moment
Plus it wasn’t even like he was hot from 3 that game. It was his second one of the game and he missed the first. Missing this would have started all kinds of “why are you shooting logo 3s when you’re a big man?” discussions, but he just made it so no one can say anything.
How do you coach against this 😭, 7ft4 guy pulling up from the logo
Make sure your team is up by at least four.
The movie in my mind: “guys the strategy today is simple. Just make sure to be 4 points ahead. It is a guaranteed defense against 3 pointers. Any questions?”
The easiest way to achieve this is by having a 4-point-play each possession
Also, that guy plays defense.
His ability to hit shots like this are why I’ve never understood when people have knocked him for shooting 5+ 3P a game while being a little below league average.
The fact that he can hit and is actively looking to take these long shots makes his whole game more dangerous. You can’t just protect the paint when he can realistically hit a clutch shot from the logo.
The only gameplan is to hope his shooting rhythm is off and you can smother him in the paint more. If he ever finds that superstar consistency he’ll be completely unstoppable.
Plus, he’s going to get better at it. It’s going to be a problem when he starts developing that shot more.
Going to be a problem? He’s already the best player alive by a mile imo.
Theres nothing you can do besides foul and hope the refs don’t call it when he’s on offense and on defense dudes just avoid the 10ft radius around him
Just giving him extremely hard fouls and accepting the free throws would probably work more than you think. The man is THIN
The rest of the Spurs would pull out knives lmao
I dont think it would. It sounds like you are basically saying “try to injure him” and if that becomes the strategy the league will step in quick. Even as it is, most “hard fouls” are getting reviewed, and flagrants will lose you the game quick.
If you mean just try and avoid him getting shots off - this isn’t Shaq. He shot 12-13 FTs last night and is 80%+ for his career.
it´s easy to compare some numbers, but the context is always complex af and that´s where the vast majority of people struggle, for good reason.
The only way to defend Wemby is prior to catching the ball. Pick him up full court and get uncomfortably close. Hold, press, push, almost get under him to make him uncomfortable. Once he has the ball there’s not much you can do.
You literally can’t, idk how. Idk if it’s possible
KD used to do that
He is a mere 7ft, dwarf
You live with the fact he’ll hit that 25%
Is it ilegal to have a PG being piggy backed or in the shoulders of your Center?
Run more time off the clock instead of putting up a contested shot when you’re up 3
LISAN AL GAIB
Harrison Barnes was there for both. Wonder how cool it must be to still witness insane shit at his level.
This shot cemented his status as unc
fuck man i wish breen or harlan were on this game. no offense to mike tirico he was still really good but he’s still in the tier 2 or tier 3 of nba commentators and not comparable to the goats
At least we got Reggie going full Goofy with that hyuk hyuk laugh lmao
Tbh Reggie and thousands of other people had the same hyuk hyuk laugh in that moment
Turned him into cris collinsworth for a second there
Reminds me of this gem
If Mike Breen calls this it’s a top 10 all time moment.
BAAAAAAAANG!!!
tirico said something dumb as fuck and i dont remember what it was but fuck mike tirico
it was when he was saying how it was necessary for the refs to have a real look at that wemby charge
was it the caruso “lip reading”
Nah, that’s the kind of dumb shit I live for in play-by-play.
That was fine
Mike tirico has been terrible the entire season. His calls dont match the intensity of the game and the hype of the magnificent plays. NBC is not being criticized simply because of people’s nostalgic feeling to the 90s. They have been bad
It’s weird because Tirico has called big moments before in a great way (lillard buzzer beater vs rockets comes to mind) but he’s just been off this year. He called that last and one dunk by wemby like it was a regular season game in January
I agree, and I feel like his chemistry with Reggie has something to do with it. Tirico and Hubie Brown were an iconic duo back then and they fed off each other so much better.
I want that one crazy announcer from hornets in games like these
same. Eric Collins I think
The fuck, Tirico is not no damn tier 2 let alone 3
Yeah it’s a huge miss not having them here considering this is basically the Finals. It’s likely the best series we will have all playoffs. Missed opportunity.
Chet was even tryna flop but didn’t get the whistle then Wemby did this. Justice served ethically 😂
Bum ass had to sit there and watch the real MVP hit that shot in his home turf from behind the play 😂
Chet’s raggedy abraham lincoln looking ass, so satisfying to see him fuming
In 2008, a 7 footer also shot a 3 pointer to tie and push the game to double overtime too. On a game 1 against Phoenix. I said wtf was that Timmy? Today, I screamed, wtf was that Wemby?
And then both goes in.
He’s literally the best player I’ve ever seen.
What about that Lebron fella?
Hey LeBron, we’re good.
You can ride off into the sunset now.
I got to watch both. It’s comparable
Lebrons longevity and health are going to be so hard to replicate.
never heard of him
The 7’6 guy pulling up shooting a clean three pointer 28 feet deep is diabolical.
Game 1 deserves better commentators. The shot by Wendy deserved more than an “Oh…OH…Oh” by Reggie.
Imagine if you were blind, and that’s all you hear from the TV / Radio. This series deserves professional commentators. Wish it was Kevin Harlan at least.
Breen is a true professional. He has the presence of mind to control his excitement and give an accurate description of what happened with curry’s shot.
Yeah, but Jamal Crawford called out the similarity to Steph’s shot immediately. That’s pretty clutch
Reggie is great!
Reggies fine, but this is the biggest series of the 2020s and that is not good enough.
You guys are so weird
Tirico has “it’s Lillard, HEGOTTHESHOTOFF, LILLARD GOOOOD! And the blazers win the series for the first time IN 14 YEARS!” Epic
How do you dorks always find something to complain about
He was stunned. We all were wondering what jsut happened. It seemed like a terrible idea and then turned into an unforgettable shot
Cooooooooold asf ALIEN. 🥶 🏀 👽
Wow Harrison Barnes being in the floor for both those shots 🤯
Please bring us amazing commentators again, Breen and Harlan just another level above the rest, it’s the conference finals, the best teams should have the best commentators.
Come on, by the time he let go, his arms were over the three point line.
Should have shown the bricks that led to both shots, and they’d look even more identical
You know OKC fans got to have a homegrown title and even if they lose the series they can just draft one of the Michigan bigs and have another guy to guard Wemby next year. But still they’ve had some rough losses.
Between the two Aaron Gordon shots and the Hali shot from last year alone, I knew this was going in the moment it left his hands.
OKC seems to find themselves on the wrong side of history of a lot of historical shots 🤣
You might be the only one. I thought he was crazy for shooting that.
After Dame “Bad Shot” Lillard, I expect all these random shots to go in
you missed the first part since it’s literally the same shot Westbrook took (same as JDub) – a running shot on that side of the court
Shai snakes OKC to join the Spurs?
JDub goes on an MVP run?
Shai for fox who says no
Curry’s shot felt like it came from a mile away while Wemby’s was like a middy 😭. This man is unreal.
Due to his size, Wemby from the logo leaves the same impression as Steph from the free throw line.
Steph from the elbow, really.
The ball even went in the basket the same way
After a terrible Jdub shot and chet flooping trying to get a call.
The Thunder should replace the hardwood on that part of the floor. It might be legit cursed.
I can’t believe that was ten years ago. I want to go back there.
I’m so glad OKC has turned into the villains of the NBA so we can all feel good about rooting for Wemby
Wemby definitely deserved a BANG! for that shot!
I said “wtf” so many times last night
How are you not going to include in the clip the missed shots prior that were also almost identical to each other?
You and another poster have mentioned this; that’s incredible recall by both of you.
He is the one
Intercontinental ballistic 3 ball
The steph call was so much more legendary. Bannnnggg! Bannngg!
Wemby, barring injury, will be the greatest player ever. His size, his skills set, his mentality are all top tier and he’s with a great organization. I’ve seen enough.
2 stone cold killers
It gets even more interesting when watch this video in loop and you focus at the crowd and look at their reactions.
im so happy i saw both live i havent been watching much of this season but this series is an all timer
There wasn’t much pressure on Steph since that was a tied game without any time left. Wemby’s was just unfathomably bold one considering if he missed that they will most likely lose the game.
Also, a regular season game iirc…
I was thinking the same thing when I saw him make that shot! Stuff like this is gonna make defending Wenbanyama damn near impossible.
Ice in his veins
Kerr: let’s get rid of the 3pt line
Fucking mad lad
Basketball gods created, trained and built Wemby. Now just realign the west with the expansion and put my wolves in the east please.
Put this man in the enhanced games
Look at the crowd reaction on Wemby’s shot
You got him to take a bad shot, if he makes it you can live with that.
The ball looks crazy coming off his hands. All palm barely fingertips. Crazy it went in.
I wouldn’t mind if this because a tradition for OKC WCF series
Yeah it’s way too early to call goat status or anything but what I can say is he is absolutely the best player I’ve ever seen. Just crazy unbelievable.
Like how do you stop him?
It’s so wild to me that the whole OKC bench knew that shot was going in before it even left his hands.
Why does this keep happening to me.
Is Mike Breen going to call these games? I was hoping to hear that “BANG! BANG!!!” after Wemby made that shot.
BANG
Which one is Steph?
Not to downplay Curry’s insane shot but being 3 pts behind is way more impressive than a shot on a tied game
I was laying in bed and got up cause there no way a man his stature should be pulling up and hitting that 😂😂😂😂
Wemby’s reaction is ice cold man
Who wasn’t like, “WHAT ARE YOU DO…… oh wow, nice job! You do you bro!”
LeVaTeFaireFoutre3
Fuck the Thunder. This was incredibly satisfying to watch
He shot that from his home planet.
Legendary confidence and balls to try that shot at this freakin moment… Dude is made to be a legend.
Steph’s shot was a go ahead three, if he missed, they are still tied. If Wemby missed and OKC rebounded, then Spurs would have likely lost. Wemby is a problem for the rest of the league whether they win title this year or not.
THIS IS WHAT I REMEMBERED AS WELL BUT…
Wemby is COLDER cuz he did that as game-tying 3!!!!! High risk-high reward!
BANG! BANG! WHAT A SHOT FROM WEMBY
The way the crowd went from 100 to 0 instantly here was surreal
Madness
On the broadcast you could see a glimpse of Cason Wallace face on the bench. He had a slight smile and a face that said “how the fuck?”
Jeeze. They even made rim contact at the same place.
Wemby is the true MVP.
👀 🔥
I’ve been watching ball for 24+ years. Let me tell you. If this guys body holds up.
He’s just going to get stronger and smarter.
He has the killer instinct
Love seeing the surrender cobra poses amongst the blue shirts.
That was insane 🤯
The j dub miss before this looked the exact same as the russ miss that led to the curry shot too
Same color of jerseys too
wemby+curry=worry
Call me an oldhead but it’s way better when the home team uses their white uniforms, the p,ayers contrast more against their home colors in the stands and the court.
What makes this scarier is that he didn’t run around celebrating. It was business as usual. He is a killer!
Side note: if you haven’t already go watch that FULL GSW vs OKC game - promise you it’s well worth it.
If you already watched it or watched it live, go watch it again.
That’s cool and all, but Harrison Barnes was doing the Harrison Barnes impression of all time
I would had a meltdown seeing this shot if we ended up losing game 7 against the pacers last year. It would have brought nightmares on how our last window ended with KD’s hardest road. Still upset, but can probably accept that the alien arrived and there’s nothing you can do about it. Wasted a peak Caruso game which sucks but c’est la vie.
Oof sleeves on the jerseys. Just wrong.
I can hear Breen’s voice in my head (I watched it muted).
Thank God we’ve already won a chip since then, else it would’ve hurt a lot more
Wemby’s was more impressive by far since if he missed, the spurs would’ve been down 3 with OKC having possession.
Still crazy though how curry was still getting contested even at that range lmao
Wembys 3 mattered more
