[Inside The NBA] While discussing Jason Collins’ passing, Charles Barkley: “We live in a homophobic society … anybody who think we ain’t got a bunch of gay players in all sports, they’re just stupid.”
charles may say dumb stuff every now and then but ill always respect him for things like this
I do find it funny how bad I think a professional basketball analyst’s basketball opinions are, but how fucking awesome I think everything else about him is.
Absolute legend and I respect the hell out of him for continuously voicing his love the LGBTQIA+ community.
Same thing with Doc Rivers great human being terrorist basketball coach
If that was a typo, please leave it haha
Eh pretty common for any online football (Soccer) fans to see that word used to describe bad coaches or coaches who park the bus, etc.
Haramball, Tucheliban, Artetanyahu are elite pisstakes
Al-Legri always makes me chuckle
Darvin Hamas undefeated
Mbappe dictator Memes always get a sensible chuckle out of me.
We have it in F1 as well with Al-Mercaedes.
Please don’t do that to Arteta, let’s stick to haramball
Nah it was intentional
Yeah, im going to say it was intentional.
No typo
Same thing with Doc Rivers
As a Clippers fan…I remember the whole Donald Sterling tapes vividly. As a Black man first…I was in the middle of writing my manifesto as to why I was abandoning the team when Silver made his “banned for life” speech.
Afterwards, I remember saying how I thought there was no better Head Coach in the NBA to lead us through that whole situation than Doc Rivers.
I read this as great, human being terrorist, basketball coach
I love terrorist basketball. Those explosive 3 pointers are awesome.
Nah fk that he helped get Adrian Griffin fired.
They are professional entertainers, not professional basketball analysts. Once you realize that you’ll stop getting mad when they say outrageous shit.
I mean absolutely no disrespect and this is probably ignorant but it’s kinda amusing how that row of letters seem to grow one by one every time I see it. I have learned it till the Q but have no idea what “IA+” represents. If you threw a random D in there I wouldn’t dare to question it out loud.
Lgbtqia+ has been the acronym for years now
I suspect it’s I=intersexual and A= asexual
lgbtqia2+
lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, intersex (formally known as hermaphrodite but is outdated now), asexual, two-spirit, + other non-listed identities
I’m with you though it’s gotten really difficult to keep track of the meaning of the acronym. I don’t ever remember what IA2+ is either.
Wasn’t the purpose of + that we wouldn’t have add more letters? LGBTQ+
Common misconception, + is just the premium tier.
So what do you get for subscribing to premium tier.
More letters.
Your subscription to Gay is expiring
Yeah, it’s a good trade-off all things considered.
Yeah he can be an idiot but his heart is in the right place.
He has great emotional intelligence and is humble. I’ll take that over someone book smart and an asshole any day. That’s the tech world and it sucks
Barkley has never been an idiot in my opinion. Yes, he’s on a talk show and puts out takes consistently, but most of his analysis feels fairly understandable. He’s also on the mark most times for the things that really matter. Just always comes across as an authentic person, compared to a persona, which becomes rarer and rarer by the day.
Barkley has always been based in my book.
He clears shaqs big creepy ass
Shaq should be in prison
Why?
“how my ass taste?”
tbh everything he says not related to basketball is pretty great
At least he got the important one right
I loved his Draymond interaction.
Unlike a lor of people, he gets the important stuff right.
As a gay sports fan, I really appreciate him for being a consistent ally of the LGBT community. I love sports, but the rampant and unapologetic homophobia thriving in locker rooms is heartbreaking. We need all the support we can get.
It’s seriously weird how I don’t agree with many of his basketball takes (maybe he’s just happy to be the one saying shit for the sake of argument/debate, idk) but everything else is always on point.
r/nba told me that boring ass Prime and NBC coverage is better than Inside The NBA.
Funny, I haven’t seen a single clip here from those other shows all season.
Fking dorks
I saw a take on the Prime crew that basically boiled down to their host is a 10 and she still knows ball lmao.
Inside the NBA has gotten better, but the switch to ESPN has had them noticeably stifled this season, compared to when they were on TNT. The Prime panel is awesome though, I have no complaints with that crew.
Charles is my goat because he uses his profile to continuously say the thing that needs to be said.
If you think this is a homophobic society, imagine growing up in the 90s with gay parents
Charles Barkley is a national treasure. The very best basketball personality ever.
Chuck and Kareem. Chuck puts it in the simplest way it needs to be said and reaches the masses. Kareem will tell you the why behind it all and educate you along the way.
I love Chuck and Kareem, but I’m a Walton guy.
Have you ever been milked?
Pasch is still trying to wrap his mind around it all.
Tell me about the last time you went to a Dead show.
It’s a blast to have him and the crew on air
He’s one of our best
When a guy is banging ya in the post
I never really cared about his basketball career but I adore him as a personality. Truly the best. If they are smart they’ll keep him forever
He is dope, but as a knick fan Clyde is above him for me<3
Fun fact: Charles is godfather to RuPaul’s drag queen contestant, Sam Starr
He’s my emergency contact.
He’s my biological uncle
He burnt my shake.
Love Sam, hope she does well with All Stars
You mean Kenny’s sister?
They could never make me hate you Chuck
Only angry teenagers hate him. Any adult in this sub absolutely loves Chuck, he’s a treasure to basketball. Just like Jerry West or Kareem
I met someone from San Antonio that really really hates the guy. She doesn’t even like basketball.
Bet she was big too
How could you hear her with all those churros in her mouth?
No you didn’t.
Surprised you could make out what she was saying with all that churro in her mouth.
Do people actually hate Chuck? I just assumed he was universally loved because obviously he should be.
People hate a lot of his basketball takes and some people take that to mean those people hate him, because they have a childish black and white view of the world where you have to agree or disagree with everything a person says with no inbetween.
Gotta love Chuck. No matter how many questionable basketball takes he may have, dude has always had a good heart and stands on the right side of history. He had his faults there too back in the 90s but he’s grown a lot in those years and you can see it here, even if he sort of kind of dismissed Kenny’s statement for some reason.
I took it more that Chuck wanted to really emphasize the impact of normalizing being queer by being out and proud, basically saying “more work to be done until acceptance is the norm.”
Agreed. Aren’t all takes questionable? I mean, Chuck goes wild sometimes, but having an opinion is always questionable. That’s why his are so entertaining and rarely on point. He gets people questioning which, for me, is a good thing. It’s like he’s daring someone to shut his ass down.
Chuck is my forever answer to the question about what celebrity would you like to have dinner with.
The discourse surrounding players like KAT and Jared McCain is proof. They face vitriolic homophobia online, despite being straight, because they don’t conform to traditional masculinity.
KAT getting shit will never make sense to me. He’s been with the same baddie for years and just cause he talks in a different pitch sometimes people give him shit.
People policing the way men are allowed to talk, without any range unless it fits their idea of masculinity. Which is a very fragile position to be in first off. Then using it to try and bring someone down and claim it’s not homophobic.
He has a feminine accent and it’s funny sometimes. Chuck has a country accent and it’s funny sometimes. Relax. People joke about the way people talk.
Flair checks out
But if KAT came out tomorrow publicly saying that he’s struggling with depression and the comments in the media and online are a big part of that..
Then are you still justifying it as a joke? I’m plenty relaxed, but I can also see how this same logic is used to justify bullying and demeaning queer and non-queer folk from a position of straight males trying to punch down on folk and police their fragile idea of masculinity.
Some people just haven’t been around a lot of different types people. If you have a male friend who was primarily raised by or is very close to their mother, you’ll see they’ll take on more feminine mannerisms. I have a friend like this, straight but speaks more feminine. Another good example besides KAT was 2Pac in his younger years. It was very apparent especially when he his mother was around him.
I saw on social media that straight men in Oklahoma were getting their nails painted after being inspired by Jared McCain.
He’s breaking barriers of “traditional masculinity” despite being straight, which is pretty damn incredible if you ask me.
kat doesn’t even do nothing to be called gay he just dominican lmfaooooo you fried him without even meaning to😭
No, it’s definitely a thing. He gets constant fruity and other shitty comments whenever a video of him speaking gets posted anywhere.
have you not seen the clips people make?
I’m queer and I poke fun at those guys too, all in good fun. But then i realize that the majority of people are saying that shit out of genuine hate and it makes me feel bad for contributing to it.
So probably good to stop contributing to it because even as a joke it’s not necessary
yeah i stopped when i realised the crowd i was joking with meant it with hate
Good. I can back people willing to learn and grow because there’s definitely things I said (many, many) years ago when I was younger that I know is wrong and won’t say now
Charles is awesome
Charles is doing everything he can to support r/nba tonight. Mad respect.
Edit: Jokes aside, it’s always refreshing to hear public support for the gay community like this, especially with the insane shit we’re subjected to day after day in the news cycle under this admin. I can only imagine how the people actually impacted feel. I know, I know, homophobia has always been an issue but this admin has really emboldened the most miserable freaks we have in this country. We’re getting tastes of 1950s level hateful rhetoric.
Well stated! 🫡
Chuck is GOATed
Chuck is goated
Amazing statement by him tonight.
i love chuck when he speaks on social issues. such a genuine guy it makes me happy to have him be a legend of my franchise
Based
Charles Barkley should be the model American. Doesn’t matter if people perceive you as smart as long as your heart is in the right place.
That would not be great for the women of San Antonio though…
Just saw a clip of Chuck talkin about how attractive Max Strus is.. wonder if that was in response to what he said here, doing his part to ease homophobic tensions maybe? Chuck is a great dude.
Naw, he always talks about how handsome he thinks Tom Brady is lol, it’s not performative at all
Fellas, is it gay to say Devin Booker a cutie fr?
Only if you put him above Oubre
Damn, first time I ever seen someone put anyone over consensus “most attractive player” Kelly ‘Dreamy Eyes’ Oubre.
It was a bit sad for Kenny to be making jokes about this, stuff like “what makes him attractive to you” after Chuck said this earlier in the program.
Implying that stating someone is attractive is the same as being attracted to them, which kind of lessens same-sex attraction and also suggests that finding another man is worthy of ridicule.
I know it was harmless from Kenny, and I highly doubt he has a homophobic bone in him but that’s where just checking yourself comes in.
Common Chuck W
Another sweet and earnest Chuck statement. What else is new
Respect man, amazing take
Love Charles 🥹
Shaq’s silence was deafening.
Did he say anything here outside of this clip?
The black community are very homophobic and if you think the nba locker rooms would be cool with a gay player in today’s world, you are lying to yourself. It must have been hard for Jason to come out then but at least he was free the rest of his life.
Sorry but it’s “must have” and not “must of”
It wasn’t black people that elected a pedophile rapist twice. NBA players in comparison to nhl, mlb and nfl players are probably the most progressive.
progressive is not a single attribute.
Obviously
Acceptance of LGBT members is one thing that the black community in America has lagged well behind other racial groups in, especially when accounting for gender. Black males are one of the least accepting groups of homosexuality there is. Just because the NBA and its players are progressive on race related issues doesnt mean they are equally as progressive on LGBT issues.
Voters don’t vote on one issue and have a wide-ranging, often conflicting set of opinions. There were a ton of NBA players and prominent black media figures who thought Collins was a disgrace and destroying the sanctity of the locker room at the time. There’s also a lot that recognized homophobia is gross and have been pushing the culture in that direction
Many ppl just assume because someone votes Democratic, there’s alignment on every issue. Black and Hispanic communities are often a lot more socially conservative than the average Democrat, they just recognize that there’s one party that sees them as less than human and another party that, even if it’s shit sometimes, is the only party that has pushed for their lives to improve
There’s no denying that the NBA’s marketed itself as the most progressive league and has that audience, but a lot of the players come from communities where casual homophobia’s common which Chuck is talking about here
Calling out homophobia with racism is a wild crossover. Irony went coast-to-coast on that one.
I think he might have worded his comment poorly but his underlying point here is correct. There’s a lot of black media figures who have spoken about this. Homophobia is really common in the Black community specifically and in a lot of minority communities more generally, much more so than in a lot of White communities, and there are stats that back that up
https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2017/06/26/support-for-same-sex-marriage-grows-even-among-groups-that-had-been-skeptical/
The good news is that homophobia’s been on the outs as being socially acceptable among all communities and that is in large part thanks to culture setters (starting in television but expanding to sports figures and eventually politicians) deciding that its not cool anymore. I remember the Inside guys talking about Jason Collins coming out and there was a surprisingly large amount of sports figures who said Collins was ruining the sanctity of the locker room, doubt anyone would feel comfortable saying that anymore which is great
Why are you and op singling out the black community on this particular issue? Seems out of nowhere. A bit racist
Charles Barkeley has such a simple but elegant way of saying the perfect thing in a situation like this. Hes given years of funny and great takes, but this is my favorite one.
The truth is that he said it in a way people needed to hear, it doesnt have to be overly explained or preachy. Sometimes the people who need to hear that specific message the most just need to have it delivered in the most real way possible. Thanks for being a good person Barkeley.
Big ole women in San Antonio and this coming from the same person is so funny
My GOAT
i love chuck
Love this. Grew up watching Jason Collins play. He also opened the door for Chuck to say what he really feels about Max Strus ❤️
I know you shouldn’t assume / guess people’s sexuality off of just their mannerisms but there is a retired / semi retired NBA player who I have seen recently give more interviews on podcasts and it seems he is probably gay. His mannerisms, tone of voice, etc all are different than how he presented himself in his career so it seems like he is more comfortable being himself in media.
Not going to directly name him but I think gay NBA, NFL, etc players are just deciding to live private lives since everyone knows they would still be judged if they were open about it.
Should’ve listened to ur first 5 words
You talking about Dwight Howard?
Nah, it’s publicly known he is bisexual / gay now after him having to acknowledge such from his court cases.
I thought Dwight never publicly acknowledged the gay rumors.
chris bosh?
Bruh, why not say who? 😂😂😂 who are you protecting
Obviously bubble butt Lowry
Idk i never watch his podcast just weird to be surreptitious about public figures 😂. Its like saying theres a rapper dropping and album this friday its been really hyped im not going to tell you who though
I’m def not outing someone who isn’t publicly out lol. And I could be wrong. But the majority of my siblings are gay and the shift in his mannerisms, voice, etc align with exactly how my siblings’ personalities evolved once they felt like they could be themselves when out.
There have been some others who have noticed it as well, surprised it isn’t a bigger story but happy it isn’t so he can just live his life.
Said the quiet part a loud say what u want about chuck he’s always did that
Shaq quiet af
Shaq:
He has good takes??
Charles is funny in that he ironically has bad takes when it comes to basketball, but when it comes to societal issues, Charles is actually very based.
His hoop takes aren’t even bad. Online people just don’t like it that he refuses to rank LeBron in his top 3, let alone have Kobe over him.
They don’t like it because it’s a bad take
One bad take doesn’t mean a Hall of Famer who by all accounts actually takes his job as someone who covers the NBA seriously doesn’t know ball lmao.
Legit nobody has said that over him not having lebron in his top 3
a Hall of Famer who by all accounts actually takes his job as someone who covers the NBA seriously
He will often admit he doesn’t watch the games, and sometimes they do segments devoted to him not knowing what teams players are even on
i love the guy but there is a very valid argument he doesn’t take the job seriously and he might make it himself, nobody is saying that just because of one take but his entire analyst career
Never forget his worst take when he said a jump shooting team isnt going to win any rings….the very year the Warriors won their first in 2015.
Remember how different the NBA was 11 years go. Hell, just look at some of the games from the Raptors’ run.
He was proven wrong but that was the meta back then.
He’s got old man takes on basketball and that’s fine. It’s not some sacrilegious thing. If you ever sat in a barbershop with older dudes working em, you’ve heard it before and you know to bounce with it to keep conversations going.
Half or more of online basketball fans have never talked hoops at a barbershop or playground and it shows
And the funny thing is the old man take is usually often more homophobic but in this case Barkley has it right (imo).
this is why charles is the best, and the heartbeat of the show. ernie is one of a kind, he’s the best host on television and has been for a long time. but chuck’s unique mixture of earnestness, humility, humor, candor and forthrightness is what makes inside the nba watchable at all.
Chuck is a 4-ring champ in societal issues
he speaking fax ngl
lol great commentary. I love how matter of fact he is
Chuck keeps it 100. Much respect.
Charles🫡🫡
Fucking love Chuck. I know he’s dumb a lot but he’s also just right a lot.
“You do not” love you Chuck
Chuck has always been as straight of a shooter as they come. Society is richer with him in it.
Charles barkley is such an amazing person. And kudos to all of them but him being who he is considering the time he grew up and where he grew up is just a real testament to his character.
He might not have a championship in the NBA, but I swear this man is my all time favorite NBA analyst and it’s not even close.
Chuck!
This is why Charles is my favorite. He’s a genuinely good guy.
Didn’t one of the actors from Heater Rivalry say that a bunch of closeted athletes reached out to him to say that the show resonated with them?
do we have gay players in nba?
Oh Never..
Thats impossible
Chuck is really intelligent when he talks about stuff other than basketball lol
Dude is the becoming the Jimmy Carter of the NBA.
Spectacular retirement.
Respect the gays or for tryin’
So far Charles has been suprisingly sound on politics considering how stubborn he is with his opinion on sports. (I don’t have the full picture, just from what I heard him say)
iirc, when Collins came out, he became a free agent and no team was signing him. The crew was discussing whether or not Collins deserved to stay in the league. I think it was Kenny who said that it would be great to have an openly gay player in an active roster but Chuck shut him down. Chuck said Collins deserved to be in the league if he’s a good enough player. Period. He shouldn’t be given special treatment just because he was gay, because that means he’d be taking the spot of a player more talented than him. I think that’s a fair, level-headed response.
Oh, oh, I know one.
He’s like reverse Andrew Bogut
When you’re banging a guy…
Rip guy with courage
If 5 percent of men identify as bi or gay. That would be about 25 players in the league today.
Not gay enough
My goat
Chuck the goat.
a Chuck, do you still remember Freddie the one you mistaken as Freddie Smith, Kenny used to say you always keep you towel around Freddie.
is he normally this red
Idk how he can say good stuff like this but then fat shame women /s
So who is the current gays in the league? Is it KD? I’ve never seen him with a woman. He did say he wanted to drink ScarJo’s bath water, but that might be like Hannibal Lecter kind of obsession.
Josh hart and Jalen Brunson.
I don’t look for it but every so often you can catch nba players eye fucking each other.
Julius Randle to Wemby is one
Walt Frazier (I think idk it’s a Knicks legend) to Kelly Oubre..
Shit, the way Charles was talking about Max Struss.
Ofc there’s some same sex attraction in the nba lmao
Mccain and Jaywill are definitely two of them
What about you?
