[Highlight] Ausar Thompson tracks Donovan Mitchell all the way and steals the ball to prevent a game-winning attempt. The Pistons want a trip called on Jarrett Allen.
Right in front of Tier 1 ref Tony Brothers, but still no call.
I mean no one wants to end on FTs, but if I was a Pistons fan I’m losing my mind
Cavs are up in OT and I’m PISSED
Detroit needed to play better it seems
Well judging by the rules of the game I’d say that we played well enough for the game to never even go to overtime.
Don’t blow a 9 point lead in the last three minutes and put it in the hands of the refs
i mean yea but can i not expect the refs to do their job?
Why would you expect that? Have you seen them this postseason?
Every postseason
Fuckin your mouth to gods ears brother
Excuse me?
allen got fouled by tobias first
“Don’t get illegally tripped” is some wild nonsense.
They got to tie that game on a nothing foul on mobley where someone brushed his jersey.
The game was decided by the refs far before that
This is such a dumb take every time it’s repeated. The game is in the refs’ hands from the opening tip. “Don’t expect the refs to do the one thing they’re supposed to do and call fouls at the end of a game”. Refs are supposed to swallow their whistle just because one team went on a run and the game is ending?
They played well enough to win under circumstances not controlled by them. That’s the whole fucking point of this post lol
Yeah may as well double the time of the game, see the result change, and say well they should’ve won then.
Putting away the whistle in the last few seconds is essentially rigging the game, doesn’t matter if they don’t want to favour one team, they are. You have to follow the rules of basketball.
You must hate basketball if you want the refs to decide the game by calling that foul.
I’m fuckin livid. This is the first game for the Pistons where I legitimately feel like the refs have negatively influenced the game.
Hardaway last yr
I’m talking about the playoffs this year, not all Pistons games of all time lol
Ah I figured but the fact that we can point to significant ref swings in 2 separate years is egregious
I can excuse one missed call, it happens. But tonight felt like the entire night they were giving them calls they didn’t give Detroit. Like, I thought Caris shoulda shot free throws in the second to last possession of the game too but they didn’t call anything.
Literally ptsd to the Hardaway jr game. I can’t have shit as a Detroit fan. I’ve learned too many rules from game Enders in NFL . The tigers are cooked. Fml
I mean last game was really bad too, refs announced at the start of the third the Cavs were gonna get the friendly whistle rest of the game.
Game 6 is going to be a makeup game, and it’s going to suck so hard. Bad product
The officiating has been heavily biased towards cleveland for 4 straight games, it’s not going to be a makeup lol
Mitchell complained and got his wish.
Have to get it to game 7! Lose out on too much gambling revenue otherwise
Cade was holding Mobleys jersey for almost 2 full seconds on that sequence . If you wanted Ausar to get free throws then I’m sure you want them to call that too.
Every possession where Cade is off ball he is held this series
Both teams holding everyone off ball this series. It’s nuts. Way way way too physical for there to be a consistent whistle. Just expect even more bullshit next game
The amount of holding off ball and the amount of pushing off with the lead arm is insane. Granted nobody wants to see a whistle every 10 seconds, but when refs let so much go, it makes it look like they are being selective, if not arbitrary, in what they call.
their calls are certainly, by definition, selective
The problem is that in a super physical series where both teams are constantly fouling, over the past 3 games one side has been called for 30 more fouls.
That’s definitely a statistic but most of the contact from both teams is occuring off ball or before the shooting motion of the ball handler.
People would be furious if the refs ended the game on an incidental trip with such little time left.
Right? That’s never called in a million years, maybe not even in a regular season game
Believe me I am
I mean no one wants a 38-20 FT difference either, but here we are.
No you’re not, it’s just another Tuesday. No matter the league, it’s what they do. Armando Galarraga (Tigers) threw a no hitter, Taylor Decker (Lions) reported as an eligible receiver, Malik Beasley was fouled on a 3 last year, and today Thompson was tripped during a critical moment where a pass could’ve been made to a wide open guy out he could’ve shot it himself.
Galarraga threw a PERFECT GAME
The only 28 out perfect game ever.
That looked like a foul
Tony was looking directly at it, like inches away, do you really think he could see that?
Only a tier 0 ref would’ve caught it
Meta
I’m honestly okay with it not being called. It’s 100% a foul in most situations, but if he regains the ball without the trip and calls a time out they have like 0.75 to 0.5 seconds and the game goes to OT and he might not have even got the immediately time out.
The trip at most cost them a hail mary chance at a last shot. Any Pistons fan has a reason to feel aggrieved though for sure.
Cuz it was
marginal hot-stove ankle tap: correct no call
— L2M
Yeah I’m surprised they swallowed the whistle
I think he steps on his foot and then the other leg kicks him for good measure. Fuck these refs
Man as much as I want to hate the refs that’s a pretty close call either way… they were both fighting for the ball
Thompson grabs Allen’s arm , both of thier feet hit the same spot within 0.1 seconds of eachother and at that point they kind of collide (barely) and Jarret kind of spins as both players are falling.. maybe a foul with Allen’s body hitting Thompson?
There would be uproar if the game ended with it being that much of a “foul”… I don’t care who wins this series but if you slow it down it’s seriously nothing
there were so many fucking leg/foot fouls given to harden throughout the game too
It definitely was
god has abandoned this franchise
Pistons won’t matter come judgement day
A+ reference
I hope to God judgement day aintt this fucking close
I think the past 20 years let us know that
Just wait until Satan eats your soul (Falcons)
That ain’t god, thats Tony Brothers.
Egregious foul at the end of the play.
They only didn’t call that shit because they didn’t want to decide the game on a foul. Horse shit.
Pistons are a victim of not getting end of game fouls.
Remember Hardaway?
That gets called on every possession but that one
When they already kinda had with that weak call on Mobley
Yup, don’t want the game won on foul shots, but it was a foul and they have to call that.
“Egregious”? Really?
Incidental, at worst
This , like yes could be called a foul but Allen is clearly just stumbling trying to get to the ball
It’s Tony Brothers’ game and we are just living in it
Sooooo are we gonna talk about how much the refs have been in cleveland’s pockets for 4 straight games? This is absolutely wild. This league is actually killing the sport I like to watch so much.
This sport is unwatchable at this point. Game 4 of this series was the most lopsidedly officiated game I’ve ever seen, and this one picked right up where they left off.
Cavs taking half the shots in the paint and shooting double the foul shots
Not defending it, but a foul doesn’t count as a shot in the paint so we are probably actually trying to take more than that
detroit settling for elbow jumpers all game instead of driving inside. JD hacking bc he’s mad he forgot how to play basketball
Tony Brothers masterclass. We’re witnessing greatness
You’re looking at a future mayor apparently 😂 at least he’s going to run for it
I don’t think that’s a trip, their feet collided side to side while they were both making a play for the ball.
Here is the clip with replay, their feet collide, and then he rolls his ankle and falls. It looks like their legs mightve stayed in contact the whole time prior to Ausar rolling his ankle but it is hard to tell: https://streamable.com/mcpwtj
Yeah I feel like I’m going crazy reading this thread. It doesn’t seem like a super obvious and easy call to me because I don’t really feel like the Pistons had possession yet. Obviously I’d be pissed if I were a Pistons fan, but this doesn’t seem like an egregious blown call like everyone is making it out to be.
Also would be lame af for a game to be decided on a trip when Detroit had zero chance of getting the ball and shooting a good shot, even if no one tripped.
People don’t like it but incidental contact can actually happen without a foul (which the refs almost always call a foul on someone)
Piston fans are frustrated we just ran out of gas and lost at the end anyways.
And it’s got shades of the Tim Hardaway foul from last year, so it’s just rough.
I don’t think we “deserved” to win or any nonsense like that. But it can still be disappointing.
If it was in the middle of the game no one would care
I feel like I am going crazy. I agree w you (obvi biased). It felt like a pretty even battle for the ball and then Ausar trips over himself and then add’l foot-to-foot contact
and am I the only one seeing ausar grab Jarret’s arm prior to the contact?
you’re correct
Nope. I said the same thing.
Yeah, and it’s all even more clear on the slow motion replay that someone posted, check this: https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/1tcoq6z/slow_motion_replay_of_the_contact_between/
2 Minute Report will have some people unhappy, but most will just pretend that they weren’t saying all that stuff today tbh lol
I’m seeing it as he tripped over himself. Allen did touch his other foot.
Ausar is ahead of the defender that’s his possession; it’s a foul no matter what way you look at it.
Allen veers sideways after the foot to foot contact due to his arm being grabbed and then getting shoved by Thompson
I feel like no one else saw the replay and didnt even see that Ausar contacted first.
Thompson also used his left hand to prevent Allen from getting to the ball as their feet collide
I’m very biased a foul is almost never called two guys’ legs get tangled up going for a loose ball like that. Thompson loses his balance initially because his and Allen’s feet collide in midair. Thompson also extends his off-arm to fend off Allen.
This would not be ruled a foul even if it were reviewed.
Pistons got screwed
This sort of “can’t decide the game like this” mentality has killed officiating in general, but my god this is a pretty obvious trip.
It’s all the more egregious when the team that did the obvious foul has clawed its way back by getting– you guessed it!– almost twice as many FTs.
If you don’t wanna decide a game with FTs, that’s fine. There’s 48 minutes for you to do that. If you’re gonna call so many of them for one team during those 48 min, the absolute minimum you can do is call one of them when it clearly happens in a moment that decides the game
Who are we watching, the Lions?
Yes
It’s cause of the way Detroit dresses
Lol maybe the whole city is cursed
Losing a 9 point lead with 3 minutes left is what screwed them lol
And they just lost the game lol
Need a replay but I feel like Harden clearly fouled Levert on the pistons last shot too
And Mobley fouled Reed on the block before that lol
They got the trap in OT and the refs called a phantom foul too lol
harden wasalready out of bounds before the foul
“Foul” was all ball too
You’re telling me Harden would just do that? Throw his body in the opposite direction without any contact??
No way, refs would’ve learned by now. If he’d been doing that kind of thing for 15 years there’s no way he’d still get rewarded for it, especially in key moments like this!
I honestly don’t see the foul. It’s incidental contact between the two guys both going for the ball and probably gets overturned if they call it and on Cleveland’s obvious challenge after they do.
Yeah I really don’t see what people are calling egregious. Allen and Thompson both take big steps towards the ball and their feet collide, causing Ausar to tumble. Maybe another angle shows something else but I just don’t see the foul.
You don’t go through a player who has successfully positioned themself between you and the ball.
Phew, I almost thought we weren’t going to get any controversial calls/no-calls at the end there
I don’t think it’s as bad as people are making it out to be. If they called a foul, no issue, but I think it was a loose ball bang bang play with the slight benefit of the doubt to Thompson.
Get out of here with your logic and reasonable takes, can’t you see how mad they all are?
Tier 1 Ref
Definitely should have been a foul call, and holy shit that was a godawful final possession from Mitchell.
Ausar has also just been really good on Mitchell and Harden.
Garbage no call there. Absolute foul wtf
Don’t worry, they’ll get it called correctly in the 2 Minute Report later.
I mean look at Allen’s body language he knows he fouled there.
Harden knows it too
I don’t think you’re very good at reading body language
Good callout that’s so true. Allen starts walking towards the FT line and Harden raises his hands in disgust. They both shift mannerisms soon as they see the no call.
That’s such a bad no call
I mean, Thompson hacks the shit out of Mitchell’s arms. That’s not a steal. Thompson creates so much contact on defense, he’s never gonna get incidental contact fouls.
Not until he finds his way to OKC at least.
The block was clean on replay but definitely a good no call. They both go for the loose ball and their feet collide side by side
That was not a good possession. Honestly, I would have preferred Harden with that one.
Agreed
Not getting Strus even slightly involved in some kind of motion on the play was so sad. Dude deserved to be a part of the last play
Harden has 5 pf and they are refusing to call anything on him on any play it’s ridiculous. Watching this game this is worse than any OKC game the contrast with the foul calls between the both teams today is insane
If you watch their feet they just land at the same spot
Played for the ball. Still gets called half the time but during a tied Game 5 in the second round? Understandable no call
Yeah I mean the game is either Cavs make a game winner or it goes to OT. Refs aren’t gonna do shit
Tony Brothers 🔥🔥🔥
There’s like 3 fouls on this play but people want to cry about the refs not deciding the game on the completely inconsequential one.
that aint no foul fuck that shit
This is what people want. “Let them play” “don’t decide the game on a call.”
I will never understand why the fans want the game to be officiated differently in the playoffs than the regular season in the NBA, but by and large that is what NBA fans want.
there have been more fouls called per game in the playoffs than the regular season this yr
I want to see another replay of Mitchell’s last shot. To me it looked like he might’ve gotten hit on the wrist. Everyone’s talking about that trip on Thompston, but the (possible) foul on Mitchell’s shot attempt is being ignored.
Woah now, dont come into this thread with rationale. Save that shit for a year from now
A+ for Tony Brothers 🤣
Lets be real yall aint blowing the whistle either though.
Edit: Ausar is amazing
That no call was brought to you by BetMGM and DraftKings.
Idk dude sure seems like something they usually call
2 timeouts but lemme let butter fingers ride out the final shot
This will get talked about more if Pistons lose in OT
Thompson has been incredible on defense today
Refs never call those fouls at the end of the game, but they should have here because it was egregious, and the Cavs got soft calls earlier.
I like the no call here, inadvertent and not much Ausar can do with the ball anyway there. Ending the game on free throws would be lame. The people complaining now are the same ones saying “refball” and complaining when calls like this would’ve been ruin entire games
Thompson literally pushes Allens arm right before the “contact” and yall are pissed they didn’t call this
meh weak call to end the game on. letting it go OT is fine. I doubt they would’ve got that shot off
This series has now been 4 straight games of baffling call after baffling call in the Cavs favor, absolutely horseshit
Not a fan of either teams but just seems like a battle for the ball lol he never had possession
I know it’s a foul - but I guess I’m in the minority cause I don’t think there’s any way on planet earth you end a game like this on that kind of contact between JA and Thompson. Thompson wasn’t going to do anything and had no chance to score, neither did the Pistons there to gather possession, call a timeout and actually do anything other than a Derek Fisher miracle.
Insane no call
Tony brothers is actually blind
Tony Brothers at it again
Tonys brother should be banned from the nba
Good no call - both players was going for the ball
Good no call since DMitch was fouled right before that. On the replay he was fouled on his forearm but no foul was called, if it was the game would have ended right there in regulation most likely.
It’s a foul, but I think you have to swallow the whistle here. Ending the game on a completely unintentional trip on a play that had 0 hope of scoring would just feel atrocious.
I said the same thing and getting downvoted.. it feels a bit like pass interference in the NFL - if you can’t even catch the pass, or nothing would have happened in spite of some contact, why throw the flag…
OP didn’t include the reply in his clip, but in slo-mo it really looked like Thompson tripped himself.
I think it was a good non-cal
There was an even worse call right before this where the refs gifted Mobley two free throws to tie it
That was a collapse and choke job. You can point to one play but you go into OT at home after the road team runs off 9 straight on you to end the game and then handily beats you in overtime, you don’t get to say shit. Sucks to have sour grapes.
No surprise Tony brothers is involved in some dog shit reffing.
Aint nobody calling that shit.
Especially on a guy who is as physical as Ausar.
Yall don’t know ball. Bunch of clowns
Classic idiotic ref logic. I don’t want to decide the game by calling an obvious foul so I won’t call the obvious foul which also means I’m deciding the game.
Embarrassing for the league to have refs steal a game from a team like this.
I know we don’t want games to end on game-winning FTs, but it is worse to see an obvious loose ball foul and have it not called.
Great d all round there!
Tony Brothers in his bag lmao
Who’s that ref thats directly looking at the trip?
Refs saying we going to OT no matter what
I saw that it was a foul on my 180p stream
His Brother would have called that
Overtime >
Just what we wanted - more of this game.
Can’t give them the game on incidental contact like that. EARN IT
Can’t refs trigger manual reviews for stuff like this?
And this cunt wants to be mayor of a city?
man why did Mitchell have the ball bru, harden was cooking throughout the whole game!
This is why the league keeps guys like Tony Brothers in. They do not want the game to end on a FT when they can have OT. It is a product to them and guys like Brothers deliver on it. He is going to get a bonus from Silver for this.
A referee in the NBA that called this would have gotten a nice bench ride for the rest of the playoffs.
Bruh
Why are NBA refs so bad? Why, after playoff games is the topic of discussion fouls and refs? Why can’t the NBA improve its product?
“The pistons want a trip call”
No the pistons want you to call the foul on James harden the play before and then call the trip or give the time left for a buzzer beater.
I just want a fair fucking game. Just once I want a Detroit sport officiated that isn’t some wack slant towards the other team.
We played 2 games in a row where the free throw differential averaged almost 2.5 to 1. At least be consistent and don’t reward harden for his bs the entire game shoving players every play then laying on his ass like he was getting fouled every play
This was after the most ticky tack bullshit foul call that led to the Cavs tying the game on (more) free throws.
Fuck the refs
People can say what they want but the refs kept Cleveland in the game up until they could take the lead and then continued. The Cavs would’ve been down by way more than 8 if it wasn’t for horse shit reffing in the first half and then it just continued in the second
I know it was a foul, but honestly I like the no call. Let OT decide. This whole series has been physical. Refs shouldn’t be calling game deciding free throws on “technically a foul” fouls
Boyyyyy.. if this happened against one of the popular teams like LAL omg 😂😂
We wouldn’t hear the end of it! It’d be the biggest story until the next game 😂
But since it’s DET, there’s only 228 comments 😂💀
This straight out needs to be investigated. They didn’t even call for review
No skin the game. Thats a terrible missed call that would have won them the game
Also no skin in the game. That would’ve been one of the weakest calls to essentially decide a game I’ve ever seen, happy there was no whistle
