[State of the Game] Jaylen Brown said he used fan support years ago to start again despite the fact that Brad Stevens preferred Gordon Hayward: “Once you get the people talking about it, the front office is going to start making decisions.”
2018-19 is the only year he wasn’t a full time starter with Hayward on the team.
He started the first 18 games alongside Hayward and Hayward only started the first 15 games that year. Morris was the one who started 53 games with Kyrie, Smart, Tatum, and Horford.
The morris bros were on every team gahdamn
Morris Bros, Dennis Schroeder, and PJ Tucker are the real faces of the NBA
The Morris Bros are the epitome of heels, not faces.
Bebop and Rocksteady of the NBA
Obligatory fuck Marcus Morris
Think you’re missing the point of the joke
You missed their wrestling joke
What is the wrestling joke besides heels?
Faces is also a wrestling term
Jeff Green erasure
Jae Crowder, Seth Curry, Garret Temple and DJ Augustin are a couple more ATG journeymen
don’t forget robert covington
You didn’t wanna fuck with us when we had the Marcuses on the court
Every team except the spurs.
Morris also froze JB out of every possession they shared the court.
Do you even know if his minutes even changed that much from before? If his minutes didn’t change that much and it’s just the rotations, it’s not even that big of a deal.
30.7 the year before, 25.9 in 2018-19
yeah in my memory he got benched for Smart
Why does he look green-screened in
That’s a hologram
The lighting to his left
No, the lighting is a big white spotlight beneath and behind the couch aimed upwards and reflecting off the back wall too. It’s outlining both sides of his head making it look like the blended outline a bad green screen makes.
Shhh, that’s his halo
Bad lighting from behind is giving him a silhouette halo.
Life is a simulation
He’s just well moisturized bro
glowing complexion
They should add some more light sources, that will improve the integration. Maybe get better roto.
Big light to his left that’s also reflecting off the background
Really aggressive lighting
I was confused and had to look this up: Gordon Hayward was benched too. They both got benched that season for sucking.
Tbf, it was because Kyrie was an asshole who made everyone around him on the roster worse, Kemba deserves so much credit for being a great leader and putting both JT and JB in the right direction for their development
Even JT admits that they all deferred to Kyrie and there was just a competition among them as to who would be #2 and they were all a little too young to handle that maturely as they all felt (including Terry Rozier, who people forget) that they should be the #2.
Kyrie had a bad playoff series and given the success they had the season before of course it was disappointing, but somehow this gets stretched into how he was a bad leader or something the whole season. None of them have ever spoke or even suggested negativity with Kyrie himself at that time, just with the situation that was thrust upon them where they felt the #1 was open and then the roster changed to where that wasn’t the case anymore around them.
Kyrie does get a bit too much blame when it was a whole team issue but this is also too nice to Kyrie, he was publicly talking down on his teammates to the media and calling for certain guys to start
This is a nuanced conversation but I feel like it’s pretty easy to empathize with what Kyrie was trying to get across at the time to JT / JB and others, and what he was going with himself basically with his first real opportunity as an all-nba level player to be the leader on a team.
Even at the time he made the comments about them needing to learn to win, people like Paul Pierce were supportive of it and made it clear that it’s his job to send messages like that. Honestly that felt like LeBron talking.
But he also clearly became disillusioned with how the Boston media talked about him after the promise he made to re-sign in the preseason (I think he thought that would buy him some level of grace?) and he was struggling to balance being a “leader of an NBA team” and the “leader of the Celtics” when he himself didn’t really feel like a Celtic after they had such a good run with him injured the season he was set on proving himself as being capable of that.
Just a tough situation, on one hand, I think it’s unfair to say if he played better he would have been a better leader - but that’s just kind of how it unraveled.
The problem for Kyrie is that everyone started realizing Tatum was going to be better than him. This included the other players. Tatum and JB without Heyward or Kyrie took the Cavs to 7.
He was losing his spot and trying to big dog the guys who were taking it.
Yea but he stomped on Lucky
i just dont think those grievances ever need to be made public especially in the major markets
Bad leader doesn’t necessarily mean that he is negative or a bad dude. It’s just expected that a great player makes the team better, but Kyrie has never appeared to have elevated teams as the number 1 option. Plus I’m pretty sure he had some fairly negative comments about the young players in that era despite the fact they had success before he got there.
Kyrie did not turn Jaylen brown into a bad passer
lolwut Kemba literally hated Boston cause their fans booed him
turns out Kyrie wasn’t the reason for the problems, it was the organization. even after Kyrie left, the players criticized Brad Stevens for playing favorites and not holding guys accountable
In this story, Brown says he used flashy dunks to win over fan support to make them put pressure on the front office to play him.
I’d never considered that angle from the player trying to get playing time before. But it’s definitely true that fans will absolutely clamor for the coach to play the athletic young player that’s dunking a lot even if they’re messing up elsewhere
PP is a smaller white guy that Ime wouldn’t play that fans wanted to be played more
PP is very flashy even though it’s not dunks
Shhhh we need to let the most expensive contract in NBA history victimize himself bcuz he couldnt close out a 3-1 series lead
How is he victimizing himself
Shhhh, hes not.
Did we miss that whole era when he’s complaining about refs and how he’s reffed differently?
What does that have to do with this post
You just asked me how he’s victimized himself and I answered
In relation to this post.
Unless your comment on this post and thread is completely irrelevant to the topic at hand and you brought up something entirely different without clarifying that
So you’re one of those celtics fans
Kkk celtics showing out. /s
I’ve actively been against JB since drafting him bcuz I hate “athletes that can be molded” lol. Very keen to trade him for Kawhi all these years.
Embraced him around 2021 once he started developing his 3-pt shot and continued to grow as a player. These past few weeks were fucking pathetic showing from him. Just absolute bitch-made nonsense.
So yes, I’m one of “those” Celtics fans that likes players who seemingly enjoy playing for the team without making it about themselves, and don’t make excuses the day after they choke by blaming the refs lol.
This interview was filmed months ago during All-Star break fyi
What the fuck are you talking about?
Y’all want white people to be oppressed so bad lmao
Brown has massive main character syndrome. He literally thinks everything revolves around him.
All the positives that have happened are because he influenced it in some way and all the negatives are due to unfair agendas to diminish him
Right HE has the syndrome not you and your JDS
His comments to Jordan Walsh about being flashier on fast breaks make a lot more sense with this context.
and the way he talks about always being the best defender on the court really makes you think of how he’s probably mentored hugo/walsh/baylor into being the gritty defenders they’ve become
It makes me think that he’s delusional
Terrence Shannon Jr has crashed into the chat
It’s like when people clambered for Dillingham to start despite having maybe 2 good performances ever
It’s ok he’s hurting others instead now
Opposite end of that for me, is a guy like RJ Barrett who is a solid playoff performer who works incredibly hard to be a winning player, but he has no flashy bag, a vanilla dunk package, very few highlight worthy plays.
But he’s gonna hit than spin move, hit the post hook, bully ball into the paint and hit catch and shoot 3s at a decent clip. Just gets it done. That game winning 3 though, that will help his stock with a fan base to value everything else more and want to keep him a part of the long term future
He’s interesting. But with a 34% three (.345 career), and seasons shooting FTs in the 60% ranage (705 career), causing him to hover at 19,20,21 ppg range, really keeps him from shining.
If he got more consistent with that 3. You see 6 of 8 in a recent playoff game. But in same series he’s got 1 of 6 twice and 4 of 12 in another game.
This kind of inconsistency will get you a wink and a nod from the Timberwolves (they love inconsistent cats), but that’s it.
Teams gotta use guys like this with more day to day decisions if you ask me. When you see him looking off, leave his ass on the bench more. When you see him clicking early in a game, lean on him. I see a good team player doing a bit of everything from boards to blocks so I hope he can nail down his consistency shooting at some point.
More to your point, yeah, some flashy finishes might help perceptions. But I think his consistency improving would increase those average point totals and then fans be chirping.
This is Shaedon Sharpe on our team lol
kuminga special
literally our fanbase the last 3 years with Kuminga
it’s definitely true that fans will absolutely clamor for the coach to play the athletic young player that’s dunking a lot even if they’re messing up elsewhere
There’s nowhere this is less true than Boston
I don’t think a fan petition made Stevens play JB over Gordon…..that wasn’t even really who he was fighting minutes with. It was Smart and Morris who got more run when the team was hovering around .500 that year
JB believing a fan petition changed Brads mind on a basketball decision is the most JB thought of all time.
He’s a full-on conspiracy theorist at this point.
It’s just so weird because like-he knows the guy personally I imagine right?? The more I hear Jaylen Brown speak about Brad Stevens the more I think (despite it obviously being impossible) that he’s only talked to the dude like 10 times total. This feels like something a fan would post on reddit when a change they wanted happened totally independently of them. Right down to not knowing who the actual players starting over him were.
I like how we are probably bringing back Kyrie with none of the talent in 6 months because Stevens doesn’t want to make the hard choice to package this guy with 3 picks and cut our losses
I love JB and what he has given to this team, but the bro is way too fucking deep into Podcast brain.
He’s constantly caught up in conspiracies, pseudo science and isn’t he partnered up with some grifters selling magic necklaces?
No reasonable person thinks a fucking fan petition determines the starting lineups.
That sort of mindset is what propelled him to be as successful as he is. Without that chip on his shoulders and feeling the world is against him, he probably wouldn’t be as motivated
Brad Stevens does not seem like the type of guy to give into fan pressure at all. This is total nonsense from JB lol.
I’m sure you know more than JB.
He probably does at this point lol bros been talking like he’s got cte lately
The spray-on hairline fumes caused permanent (pun intended) damage.
Why is it that the players you least want to hear from are the ones who talk the most…
Not quite the same, but I find the loudest aggresive dudes are often the biggest pussies too.
The less you know, the more you think you know.
Jb bring out the uncle ruckus in all of us huh
Because they’re the ones people post here constantly for drama points
You do know you don’t have to watch the video right? Lmfao
He’s actively trying to get himself traded, right?
By sharing an anecdote from 7 years ago? Surely not an efficient way to go about that.
Definitely puts pressure on the FO, which is now run by Stevens
What’s the pressure being applied here?
“Once you get the people talking about it, the front office is going to start making decisions.”
That seems to certainly imply a general principle. Don’t play dumb
Y’all read full books between lines in these clips that are completely removed from context. Shit is hilarious to watch every summer.
Feels like it. Seems like a direct insult to Stevens
He personally recruited and coached Hayward at Butler so he was already biased, but he was a cone by the time he got to Boston. Starting JB was 100% the right move
And Brown did start. He was competing with Hayward so much as Smart and Morris during his first few years
The Celtics were always better against the Heat when Hayward was in.
But Steven’s is a winner who prioritizes winning. Browns favorite season was when he lost in the first round
He was a cone by the time he got to Boston? You mean he got severely injured and was never the same player?
He was still a cone on defense, thanks for the context.
You would never know, because he never played in the system when healthy
I mean, I’m shocked Tatum and Brown stayed together even this long lol.
No he’s just running his mouth as usual lmao.
He got a FMVP and probably a first team by doing it. Why stop now?
Yes
What an odd thing he felt needed to be said and what an odd time to do so
This was recorded around All Star break in February but only got released now
Fair enough. Still an odd thing to share lol
Do you think they asked him a question that directly led to this story being shared?
Na they think the specific clips just pops into existence with no context
Bro is in offseason mode and wanted to give Reddit some peak content
That’s what is going to happen to Ace with Jazz fans when the starting lineup is Key, Peterson, Lauri, Jaren, and Kessler. Once again Danny Ainge will have to deal with it again
This is insane! Hayward was moved to the bench together with Jaylen lol
Gordon started 18 out of 72 games that year. After the slow start we went with Kyrie, Smart, Tatum, Morris and Horford.
i hadn’t considered players do this but of course they do
Ok what is happening in the this video? Is the background fake?
That light around his face seems so eerie. I’m not the only one that noticed that right? Am I trippin?
It’s just a kicker. It’s an aggressive one though.
Na na na hey hey hey goodbye
Igoudala is dying laughing from JB here, wild
This is absolutely ridiculous and there’s no way it’s true.
Every time he opens his mouth it makes more sense why none of his teammates wanted to sit next to him in the movie theater lmao
Pseudointellectual blunt rotation
Just to get ahead of it the Celtics organization and team just doesn’t care when he says shit like this. As long as he shows up and puts in the work, which he does.
He seems like he’s trying to leverage more popularity and or power based on the great season he had. I’d rather have a superstar always put team first but that’s pretty rare. That being said if he wanted to play in Milwaukee I’d be all for it. Like you said he shows up.
Yup
It’s clear he’s using his best season and only season as the clear cut number one to leverage the franchise into decisions
He’s starting his LeGM phase and taking advantage of his influence while he can
Yeah the problem is in his case I think it’s already starting to backfire. We all know he’s no LeBron and isn’t ever going to really get that power. I sound contradictory but I’d still be excited to have him in Milwaukee if if if and so on. As long as he wanted to be here. I have zero idea if he would even want to so we’ll see. He’s still a great player.
He deserves to lead his own team
Lol no he doesn’t
Someone’s scared of getting traded lmao.
Damn Celtics fans really want jaylen traded huh
I can’t figure out why, is this “Giannis” guy even any good?
Oh yeah, cause the Celtics “definitely” have the best package for him 🙄
Do you even look at the bucks point of view or just be delusional and act like they will just trade him to the Celtics 🤔
Did I say “it’s going to happen”?
I’m just saying why Celtics fans want him traded, because trading him would theoretically be for Giannis
Yeah easier said than done.
Only the fairweather weirdos and big brain armchair GMs
This is actually very interesting. Before seeing this, I only thought he was self-centered because he called leading a team to a first-round exit his favorite season ever. But I know he’s self-centered because he did highlight dunks to get more fan support behind him. Everything is about him and how he can achieve his own goals.
Can someone explain why Iggy is laughing
He prob thought Jaylen was gonna say white.
Either that or Jaylen sounded arrogant?
Am I misremembering stuff? He got minutes from Hayward because Hayward had a pretty gruesome injury that left him a shell of himself after.
Bruh, you were not good back then and that’s ok because look where you are now.
This feels like a horrible process for front offices to use
Weirdo
I’m pretty sure he’s misremembering. Heyward was already benched coming back from injury and looks like he lost something. They were starting marcus smart 60 games and morris 57 games over jaylen brown. The other three starters were tatum, heyward and Kyrie.
Wait so he’s not actually smart?
eNeRgY
As the Cs, I don’t see if you don’t get good value you don’t trade him. Hawks find a way to pair him with Jalen Johnson right?
It’s a entertainment business
Was there really a fan petition? It feels like he spins a lot of stories to put himself in the most positive light ever. Looking at the stats that season he wasn’t even that good yet
Jaylen Brown his team are really trying to turn Jaylen Brown into an interesting person and it’s not working
get this man to the lakers two team trade for AR and Bron to Cleveland yeah yeah I know dreams are free
You would pick AR over Jaylen Brown 😂
This guy is most home schooled, Reddit brained professional athlete I’ve ever seen
If you give the power to the fans what happens when they suddenly don’t like you? If the fans have that much power why couldn’t they make the Lakers Beat OKC?
Like trading your dumb ass?
Brad trying to start Hayward was the bigger issue with that team. Everyone love to just blame Kyrie but Tatum and brown should’ve been starting
He gone, smart enough to read the room, too smart for his own good
He believes in conspiracies and horoscopes, he’s a pseudo-intellectual, not smart.
Was . It . Really . Nesmith ?
Not a good look, but what’s even worse was another clip I saw from this same discussion where Brown said:
“For me, I looked at it as like, you know, I’m going to accept the role that they are offering me while knowing the role that I have for myself. Right? And I’m going to do your role to perfection, but I’m going to sneak my little one-two in there, you know, every- every chance I get.”
Brown is basically admitting he’s playing selfish basketball because he has his own interests/ambitions.
Whatever the reason is, it’s just not a good look. Based on him always having a chip on his shoulder since getting booed on draft night, but coming across as a “whatever it takes” to now this tone of “I deserve this,” I think this season where the Celtics had regular season success went to his head. He’s extremely impressionable and I’m never going to fault him for believing in himself and his ability/work ethic, but between this and the stream after the PHI loss, he’s giving off bad vibes. It feels like he wants more control in Mazzulla’s offense even though Tatum is back, or wants to be traded to be the man somewhere.
This just reminds me of the Jerami Grant situation when he went to Detroit for a larger role. Brown is a much better player so maybe not the best comparison, but that’s a recent example I can think of where a guy wanted a bigger role and the team had to move on from him because it just was going to disrupt the situation with 1 guy playing for himself. Teams can make it work for years, but when there’s tension like that (Kobe and Shaq come to mind too), sometimes things just reach their end even if they made it work for years and had success.
Oh lawd
