Even kratom (the natural plant) alone is very addictive and harmful. I’m dealing with it myself right now. Has had a hold on me for most of the last 10 years with a few months breaks here or there.

I quit last year and had extreme insomnia, stomach issues and anxiety/depression for three months till I started using it again. And just quitting to begin with was one of the harder things I’ve done in my life.

Currently slowly tapering down to quit and hopefully mitigate the long term post acute withdrawals but man this stuff is no joke, it needs to be regulated and studied more.

There’s very weak evidence you can OD on Kratom. The vast majority of kratom-related deaths are combined with other substances. So is it possible? Maybe? Definitely not anywhere close to likely, though, given the complete lack of supporting evidence…

Kratom is a plant that’s widely used across south east asia as a calming “get through the work day” substance. (You brew a tea with it) It’s nowhere near as easy to OD on as hard drugs. I think /u/Ftheyankeei is probably much closer to the money. Somebody with substance abuse issues, legal issues, and who is constantly injured and therefore away from the sport & community that they love is a prime candidate for isolation/depression pushed to the point of self-harm (which could be an intentional suicide, or reckless use of drugs that result in an OD, or something different).

You can OD on everything. It’s just easier with certain things. In the case of something like Kratom, this could be a case of combinatorial issues. A lot of these athletes are already pushing their hearts harder than they should, and Kratom can cause cardiovascular issues, among other things.

Pure speculation though. Could be anything. Though generally when they don’t announce it immediately, or announce an ongoing investigation into the cause, there’s a reason and that reason is usually centered around some kind of activity that was occurring.

Kratom is often used by people suffering from depression/mental health issues, or opioid dependence (it lessens the severity of withdrawl).
