Why do you keep saying $55+ instead of what he’s actually being paid this season? He’s 24. The contract escalates annually as he grows into his prime. He’s paid $46.4m this season and doesn’t clear $55 until 2028-29 when he’s 27. It’s not only expected he will improve but the cap will keep going up. It IS a big chunk of change but there’s no team in the league that would have passed on locking him up.
I don’t know what teams pay players for other than to win. He literally has the best winning % of any individual player in Cavs history. They just won 2 games we wouldn’t have won without him. When the Cavs looked dead in the water against Toronto, he nailed 3 shots from deep to resuscitate the team. Call him the “soft” or the “3rd option” whatever you want. The Cavs would not have gotten past Toronto w/o him and this series would likely be over. Instead they are as deep as we’ve gone since Bron left. That appears to be money well spent.

24 isn’t young when you’ve been in the league 5 years. Most players are pretty much who they are at this point from a raw numbers perspective. They’ll improve more in their impact, but 5-6 years is when the vast majority of players plateau.

He makes 50 mil next year, 54 the following and 58 after that. That’s a ton of money for a guy who’s basically putting up ¹⁸⁄₈? He’s a good player, but so was Al horford, but horford was valuable to the Celtics as a high level role player while KG was valuable as a super star centerpiece. One of those is worthy of a supermax the other is not.

Not gonna fight you about it. He averaged 22/11/4 per 36 on 56/37/72 splits at 23yo. He was DPOY and All-NBA 2nd team. Not signing him was never in play. Within a year he won’t be alone in having such a massive contract.

The Cavs have been prioritizing winning games since they got Mitchell. They never prioritized his offensive development. 18/9/4 isn’t bad when you get 12 shots a game. He’s also playing next to Jarrett Allen who is occupying the space on the floor Evan otherwise would have to work with. With all that in mind, I have little doubt Mobley will keep proving his worth. When JA is moved and Mitchell ages Mobley will grow into being the focal point.

He has to play next to a 5 and plays better next to Allen than without him, so I don’t get that. It’s not like playing in the post against Embiid or Jokic is some great coup for him offensively. I also don’t really get why you’re using per 36. He’s been within 1 of 17/9/3 for 4 straight years. His per36 and per100 also show he’s pretty much plateaued for 3+ years. To become a super star you need consistent growth every year. For example, kg stat lines by year: 10/6/2/1/2, 17/8/3/1/2, 19/10/4/2/2, 21/10/4/2/2, 23/12/5/2/2.

Do you say he’s great as in anyone who criticizes his inconsistency is dumb? Because the issue is not that he’s never great, it’s the consistency with which he’s great. That’s pretty much the defining characteristic of what separates super stars from the elite role players. There’s a ton of really annoying Cavs fans on the sub that just think every single player is an amazing player and cannot be criticized, and it’s pretty annoying. I think Mobleys good but he’s a far cry from the super star level we hoped. He could become it but he’s not really close to a guy like kg or Duncan right now. Took a lot of that sub to realize okoro sucked ass and needed to go. Now they’re all on Tyson and it’s just as delusional.

I think many Cavs fans are frustrated because he’s got tantalizing talent but just disappears so often. It’s so frustrating to figure out if a guy is going to become a superstar or is just going to be one once in a while and an B+ player the rest of the time.
