This is where Silver’s lottery tweaks have completely fucked things up.

Luck plays too much of a role in talent redistribution.

Like, look at the Spurs: top 2 team in the league, potential dynasty forming around Wemby. Almost entirely the result of lottery luck. They moved up from 2nd worst record to 1st pick to get Wemby. Then they moved up again from 5th to 4th to get Castle. Then they moved up AGAIN from 8th all the way up to 2nd to get Harper. That’s an insane nucleus.

And people will come in and say “oh, the Spurs are a smart front office” but two of those picks were absolute no-brainers. Castle was also a pretty obvious pick at 4 (most people had him somewhere between 1-4). And they’ve also whiffed pretty badly on other picks (Sochan, Branham, Wesley, Primo were all bad value picks) and the Fox trade and extension kind of looks like a disaster considering he’s giving them 18-3-6 with subpar defense in what’s supposed to be his late prime and with 55 million a year coming his way.

Hell, think how good Detroit would be if they had gotten the 1st pick instead of the 5th pick back in 2022. Cade and Wemby would be title favorites. Instead they got Ausar Thompson, who is a great role player, and they barely survived round 1 and may only escape the East because it kind of sucks.

The conferences are pretty balanced already, it was only 621-609 in favour of the West this year. The issue is at the top where OKC is clearly way better than anybody in the East and the Wolves and Spurs probably are at this point as well. No possible pick going to the Wizards, Nets or Bulls is going to get those teams anywhere near OKC/SA/Minnesota. If parity at the top is the goal it should be Indiana, Miami and maybe Charlotte you’re rooting for.
