[Funakistats] Steven Adams explaining his offensive rebounding strategy to maximise available angles
I really enjoying listening to players break down little intricacies in the game
Shows how many levels there are to the sport
Yeah. I think NBA players are likely much smarter than most people realize and that’s probably a subtle, hidden part of the reason that the gap is so big between pros and non-pro players.
They’re definitely really smart when it comes to basketball
Not all of them. This is the distinction people refer to when talking about “basketball IQ”
Some players are *just* gifted enough naturally to be good enough to play for an NBA team despite having a low bball IQ. I’ve heard players complain vaguely about having to play with teammates who don’t understand the depth of the game, and how they hurt the team is ways that aren’t as easy to spot as a viewer but that impact the game a lot
And then guys like Jokic LeBron Luka are good examples of having both high raw talent *and* bball IQ/insane expertise of all the games ins and outs and how to manipulate the game and make predictions on the fly
I agree that obviously some players are smarter than others. But I more so meant that there’s a good chance that likely ALL pro players have a much higher Basketball IQ than most people would expect them to. Even the worst players probably understand the game at a level that would shock most people.
In other words, I think the whole “they’re just athletic and that’s it” stereotype is probably isn’t really true in most cases. The level that they have to understand the game at (in order to even stay on an NBA roster) is likely much more meticulous and complex than the more simplistic view of the game that we get to have. (Obviously because we aren’t being paid millions of dollars and competing against the best teams in the world, but still. You know what I mean.)
Well when the player is smart - it shows. When they are intelligent, have work ethic, and are athletic - they are top 30 in the nba
Yah this seems simple but I never really thought about it like that while playing
He needs to do voiceover work lol
and math lessons
if the opponent has 10 degrees of 180 you have 170
He can not rebound on the opposite side of the basket. He has about 80 degrees of bounce where he will get the rebound. If the balls goes short it will go to someone else. He is right. And you are wrong.
That’s what i gathered too.
He can beat his opponent He boxed out to the other side of the basket if the ball bounces to the other side.
Other players aren’t a factor because you never mentioned other players in the 80 degree answer. … why is it 80 degrees and not 40? What if another player has 40 degrees?
Clearly the example is for 2 players
You’re really digging in, huh? Funny as fuck to watch
At 15 seconds into the video The literal graphic in the video says 170 at the top of the screen when he says 80.
The actual visual diagram of the span of the angle is also 170 degrees
Cool man. Good at being wrong.
Nope I understand math 180 minus 10 is 170.
Math is undefeated
Just ignore the fact that Adam’s said the available space is 180 degrees at 7 seconds into the video
Math may be undefeated, but this is why word problems are so important. Because if you don’t understand what you’re reading and able to make the right inferences, you’ll be doing the wrong math.
He has the advantage over 170 degrees if the ball bounces to the other side he can beat the guy he boxed out
You cant factor in other players because youre not factoring in other players in the 90 degree argument. Why is it 90 and not 40 then? What if another player has 40 of the 80?
What’s half of 180? 90, if opponent has 10, you have how much left of the 90°??? He did the math.
Literally Adam’s says 180 near the start of the video. Im going off of what he says at 7 seconds into the video. He says its 180 degrees of space
His math is wrong
The ball has 180 degrees of range, adams has 80, the opponent he pinned has 10.
He can beat his opponent across to the other side of the basket, he has the advantage. If you’re gonna say the other players are a factor then why aren’t they a factor when there’s only 90 degrees?
Why do you think the graphic showed 170?
Why do you think he didnt say 90 at any time in the video?
Good point
because he is far bigger than the other players? if the ball goes to the 90 degree area and Adams is locking down the enemy center then what’s left are midgets trying to get a rebound on a giant in the 80degrees area.
on the other hand in the 90+ degree area it is so far away for the giant to get there in time meaning the midgets in that area can get the rebound.
But someone could be literally to the left of Adam’s as well boxing him in and he wouldn’t have 80 degrees at that point. You can just add random variables to the example but that’s just arbitrary.
Its a 2 player example.
that guy boxing adam out is a midget
okay so if you agree that theres no added variables Adams can get to the ball on the other side of the basket before the person he’s boxing out can, since he has positional advantage over the 170 degrees
If Adams ever realizes he has that many more degrees of space he’d be unstoppable on the boards.
Going to be a rebounding monster at my local Park, until I run out of stamina. Then I’m chuck 3s
🖐 🖐 I’m open I’m open
Yeah buddy get this brick off the rebound
My secret is launching airballs that go straight out of bounds. Nobody gets a rebound, the game stops while someone younger than me has to get the ball that ended up 2 courts over, the game loses momentum and then the other team gets the ball.
Based on my 50th ranked education the math seems to check out
You ever heard of a box out? Well this is a box in.
Welcome back Dennis Rodman
I think I saw someone show how Looney on the Warriors would position himself based on where the 3 point shooter shot the ball to get the offensive rebound, there’s a lot that goes into rebounds
Yeah that’s what I thought this post was gonna be about when I read the title, a lot of good rebounders probably understand it intuitively
More degrees = more boards. Ez math.
Quick maths
also need to be strong as ox to not get moved lol
Geometry with Steven Adams
My dumb ass just thought they ran in there everytime blind
Adams has a masters in physics.
Fucking brilliant man. The quieter players have so much knowledge.
Nothing to do with being one of the strongest players? Come on steven
That’s the other half of it. He described how he picks his spots. His strength is how he makes sure that no-one else gets those spots.
If anyone is wondering the podcast (because I like Steven Adams’ voice and listened to it in bed to fall asleep 😂) it’s called “between two beers podcast” on YouTube
Another day goes by where I have to use trigonometry. Thanks maths teacher for teaching me this skill.
some body send this to poetl
Screw the three point contest. Next year we need a Mitchell Robinson/Steven Adams rebound off.
Mfer absolutely punked the Warriors last year’s series. Legit was the most impactful player on the rockets
It took a super saiyan Curry lmao (also a bunch of role players in Warriors peaking) to take down a flawed and young 2024-2025 Houston rockets in playoffs.
It took a monumental effort from the zebras to drag it out to 7 games. Rockets had nearly double the amount of FTA.
It’s simple math mate.
i now understand why jokic is constantly flopping while going up for defensive rebounds
Breaking: boxing out increases your chance of grabbing boards lol.
This is moreso boxing in than fighting for inside position.
