Charles Barkley responds to Draymond’s comment on him: “Hey, man, I never punch down. Draymond’s a good player but we’re not on the same level…. He’s a really good player. He’s had a hell of a career, but we’re not on the same level.”
He ain’t wrong.
If Barkley had Draymond’s supporting cast, he would’ve won like 6 rings
Draymond was the supporting cast. If Barkley had Curry, Barkley would probably be the supporting cast too.
Barkley finished in top 10 for MVP votes 9 times. They would have been a pair of superstars. Barkley wouldn’t have been considered supporting cast.
Actually pretty similar accolades in general between Barkley and Curry outside rings.
Barkley was widely considered to be the best player not named Michael Jordan during his career. It’s only after the fact that Hakeem overtook him in Reddit’s all time rankings
Barkley would be more like KD on that team.
Was Kevin Durant the supporting cast for Steph? Barkley in his prime is at least comparable here.
KD played his best when he mainly took the open shots and played within the Warriors/Steph offense I would assume it would be the same with Barkley idk about supporting cast though
Oh please. Offense was never the issue. KD was playing near DPOY defense on the Warriors for a few years. They got that plus offense, which is different than a one dimensional player like Draymond.
Barkley jump shot isnt comparable to Durants.
He wouldn’t have to take jumpers, the Warriors offense created space all over the court. Chuck would either get 1 on 1 matchups inside the arc he could exploit, or someone would be open on the outside.
Absolutely he was the supporting cast for Steph. Steph wins rings without KD, not the other way around
You know, we never really know if curry/warriors wins two in a row without KD in those years so it’s hard to say
We know hr could win after with less talent so one can assume a toss up
The entire planet literally saw, heard, and thought about about the 2022 playoffs with our own eyes, ears, and brain and yet this stupid fuckin take still exists.
“I guess we’ll never know” duh we watched steph’s gravity, draymond’s defense, and Klay’s timely game sixes turn a ragtag bunch into a legitimate championship team while we saw Dickerson and chief hela get mugged by the same team that Steph torched to the title two months later.
he at least won two before and after Durant. That’s all that we need to know.
Barkley was better than Jordan on the Dream Team…
No, Barkley would’ve been like KD
You ranking Barkley and Durant higher than Curry
Barkley isnt as good as Durant on Offense. No where near the shooter. Barkley has the defensive edge
There’s a big difference between all time rankings based on accolades, and just who was better at basketball. Barkley is a better player than a lot of the guys around him in the all time list, because the lack of a title keeps him lower in those rankings. But just in terms of what they can do on the court, I think Barkley and Durant were as good as if not better than Curry.
Another example: Kawhi Leonard isn’t a top 10 NBA player of all time, but there’s less than ten guys who were better at basketball than Kawhi at their respective peaks
i would have to disagree, but like you say that’s arguable and i would take Curry over both Barkley and Durant. If i were to build a team.
Kawhi isnt top 10 player at his peak. IMO, that run with the Raptors has carrier his legacy. He’s great but not top 10 all time.
He was already in medical decline on the Raptors. At his best he was almost Jordan-esque with his ability to get to his spot, while being one of the greatest defensive non-bigs of all time. I would only put Jordan, Lebron, Magic, and Shaq ahead of him in terms of peak basketball dominance
That’s a HOT Take IMO. But you have your opinion.
So your idea of peak Kawhi was the year he wont final MVP?
To me, his peak was the end of 2015 up until the Zaza incident in the 2017 WCF
Barkley would simply be the other superstar alongside Curry. Fucking imbecile
These are the sort of takes that people point to when they say that this sub is filled with dummies.
Is Curry being the team focal point on offense over Barkley really a hot take?
No, but that doesn’t make the number two option “supporting cast”
You can tell the people who never actually watched Barkley play.
He was a top player in the league, an insane defender and better than any rebounder in the history of Golden States franchise during his prime.
He was a complete menace and they changed the game of basketball because of guys like Barkley and Shaq.
These rules changes impacted big men like removing the three point line would impact a player like Curry.
You had to play Man to man defense in the NBA exclusively until 2001. Big men could sit under the rim and were not forced to move. You can impede the movement of anyone attempting to dribble or drive physically. You could put your hands on offensive players and push them with your forearm.
They had to change this because guys like Barkley, Hakeem, Shaq, Ewing and other big men of that era just fucked 90 percent of players up. The NBA we have today literally wouldn’t have existed if those guys were not so damn good and made half the playters on a roster worthless.
Barkley was a great player. But Shaq was the most dominate big man in that era. Curry is the most dominate Outside player in this Era. The Impact of Curry on the game is a lot greater than Barkley. Curry showed the league that a small outside player can win championships.
It’s not like im saying Barkley is a scrub. There are plenty of great players that played in the league. Barkley is one of the top ones, but he’s not Curry. Teams today are all trying to replicate GSW’s play. That’s his impact.
Depends what era this duo played in IMO
that’s true. I guess if you put Curry in Barkley’s era coaches might not let him play like how he plays today.
Yeah he’d get his ass chewed out for the first logo 3 and never shoot one again.
That era of players would also not have the stamina to chase Curry all game long.
Unfamiliar with Chuck, I see?
Barkley as a supporting cast? Omg
Let me rephrased so everyone can calm down.
Everyone else not the focal point on offense is the support. There can only be 1 focal point. IMO
Curry was the support to Durant and at times it was the other way around.
Barkley probably fits alongside Curry the same way Kevin Durant did. Complimentary superstars but one might not be winning rings without the other.
That team would slap.
It’s funny to me how people who never watched players in their primes form certain opinions. Prime Barkley and Prime Steph on a team would be like Shaq/Kobe. Two stars who could completely take over on their own, would be unstoppable when working together, and would have tension if one side had more than the other. Despite his 6-4, 6-5 height (I’m fairly certain that’s his real height) Barkley was somehow unstoppable with his quickness and strength. And he had the smarts to keep the offense moving. Curry and KT would’ve had endless open looks if Barkley was their PnR partner or the focal point in the post.
This man made the finals without greens supporting cast, your essay is not necessary
Idk if the tone is intentional but this is a weird comment to make on a site that’s predicated on conversation…
Agree with everything you said but it’s funny how everyone thinks he’s really only 6’4. I met him about 10 years ago so he was already well into middle age and I would say he was easily 6’5, probably closer to 6’6. Dude was massive
I think he’s measured at 6’5” without shoes.
Curry was the bus driver, Durant and Klay were passengers. Draymond was the crackhead yelling at himself in the back making everyone else uncomfortable
iggy was the stressed and overworked class teacher
Barkley on the Warriors means the offense goes through him instead of Steph, at least some of the time.
You also become a terrible defensive team. Barkley was exploited relentlessly in his era, playing on one above average defense in the first 10 years of his career and it would be even worse today.
I’d rather have Draymond if I already have Steph
He is very much wrong about never punching down. Sir Charles is kind of known for taking shots at players who were never on his level. Not nearly as much as Shaq does it, but he certainly does it often.
(“I never punch down” is him punching down)
I never criticize people who suck
Also the women of San Antonio
And he wasn’t wrong the first time which is why Draymond got in his feelings.
“If Golden State was relevant he wouldn’t be in the studio with me.”
Draymond acts like Rockets Barkley was completely washed even though he averaged 16 and 12 and they made the conference finals.
And those would be the best numbers of Draymond’s career lol
He did it in a much lower scoring league too with the Rockets
Draymond acts like Barkley wasn’t 33 in an era before load management and crazy health science
That sht was so awkward cus nobody laughed and he act like Barkley put up triple singles on the rockets
I know this sub is suspicious of advanced metrics, but Barkley’s WS / 48 for every one of his Rockets seasons was higher than Draymond’s career average. And for his first three seasons on the Rockets, his WS / 48 average was better than Draymond’s career high.
Maybe WS undervalues defensive stats, but Barkley’s DWS in his Rockets seasons was basically the same as Draymond’s was last season. Rockets Barkley was basically a moderately better player than most of what we got from peak Draymond.
Just like all the other nephews on this site. Shit is tiresome
Barkley averaged 23.5 during his last playoffs
The conference Finals?! Oh boy, how exciting! What could ever be a greater sign of success than the Conference Finals???
Oh so u a casual
Definitely not out in the play-in?
…yeah, after 4 chips in 11 years, with another 2 finals appearances in the same window for a total of 6 finals. The thought that that resume is somehow inferior or equal to a conference finals appearance is laughable.
He ever win MVP?
Can you name a single competitive professional NBA player who would prefer a single MVP to playing a pivotal role in earning four championships over the course of their career?
I mean it must be the nice being the #3/#4 player in all 6 of those appearances. Draymond has never been asked to take over a game or lead a franchise nor has he ever had the ability to do so.
Austin Rivers wasn’t wrong when he talked Draymond benefitting from the best possible system and getting to play alongside multiple Top 75 players (in their prime) his entire career
Draymond fighting a multi-front war with retired players
Could just practice shooting instead
Nah, best he can do is hit that Just for Men hard and have the blackest beard on the planet
Have a vanta black beard lol
Damn this would have been a crazy bar if any of the retired guys said this back to Draymond
dude spent a decade plus with direct access to Kerr AND the Splash Brothers and couldn’t be damned to improve his damn shot, then had the audacity to blame Kerr for “holding me back” me
He shit on Kerr the other day too, talkin about how he’s been held back and who knows what his true potential could’ve been under a different coach.
This man, I swear to god. Mentally fragile and no accountability whatsoever.
He’s been practicing
this is his way to stay relevant and unfortunately I think we’re gonna be seeing this guy on the off-court news a lot in the future.
The way Draymond talks you would think he was the #1 player on the Warriors when they won all their rings. Guy thinks he’s Shaq lmao
I also noticed that people with shit takes tend to hide profiles.
Charles usually say some wild stuff but this is 1000% true. He won MVP while MJ was playing
Barkley was touted as the best player on the Dream Team. Draymond isn’t even the 2nd best player on his own team lol
Edit : this is magic johnson saying that Barkley was the best player in the Hall of Fame induction speech for the Dream Team
https://youtu.be/2qWv8f4Pijs?t=177&si=CuJW38cf_nsOXOgX
You can tell everyone’s age by the reaction to your comment. Barkley went off during the Olympics run. He was the best during that Olympics for sure. Magic knew it.
Jordan was the best player at the time for sure but Charles had a hell of an Olympic run.
“I don’t know anything about Angola but Angola is in trouble”
Completely unrelated, but do you still eat at Katz?
He was the best player on team USA and league MVP in the same season (‘92-93).
So what youre saying is…Jordan was the best player. Got it.
This is no disrespect to Charles. But they beat everybody by like 40 points. It was a slaughter. Not a great “who was really the best Dream Team player environment”
When was Draymond considered the best player on the Olympic team?
I have literally no idea what you’re trying to say
So many people telling on themselves replying to you. Of course jordan was considered the best player in the world but Barkley was considered the vocal leader of the team and played out of his mind in the Olympics.
Not even controversial tbh and I bet Draymond knows this. Hell, his response to folks who say their kids in high school play like him was pretty telling lmao
He was that guy when he was younger. He is not and has never been that guy on the Warriors. So he sold his soul to become DPOY Idi Amin and it paid ludicrous dividends. Everybody got what they wanted except for Jordan Poole and whoever Steve Kerr’s cardiologist is
Hey Draymond was on an Olympic team too. He posted his dick on Snapchat right before it started and then coach K had him ride the pine the entire tournament
Eh. Steph is clearly the best but Dray and Klay were about equal
yeah i think you can easily argue he was the second best before 2017
Yup. But you can’t talk about actually ball with Redditors
[deleted]
They didn’t word it well, but during the Olympics he was probably their best player
I was talking about Draymond
damn my bad
This is a man that’s secure within himself. You can absolutely tell that Dray riding Curry’s coattails has made him extremely insecure about his own greatness.
He’s gonna learn the hard way that they don’t love you like that
The crazy thing is that anyone who actually watched the Warriors play understands how good Draymond was and how important he was to their system. He doesn’t need to do this stuff. His legacy is secured.
There’s nothing wrong with being worse than one of the best players ever. Most players in the NBA are.
Agreed. Like Draymond your set man, you don’t have to do so much. It seems like he just can’t stop yapping for some reason
This
Yea but you’re thinking with rationale and not letting your fragile ego dominate your response and thought process.
and this is a man who ran two people outta town that ego is fragile
What have those two players done since they left Golden State?
Unfortunately this genuinely just isn’t the case. His impacts don’t show up on the box score, so a ton of people don’t respect his game at all, and people are very happy to let personal bias sway their opinions. He should be known as an all-time great defender and connecting piece on offense, easy first ballot HoF, but people diminish those contributions all the time. I don’t think getting in these feuds is helping him at all, and I get why people don’t like him, but I also get why he feels the need to defend his legacy.
Wut
“You know what Chuck, we’re NOT on the same level if I’m being completely honest. You’re right. As a 4x NBA Champion and former DPOY, I would have to agree with you, that’s my bad. I’ve been with the same team my whole career and managed to win. Unfortunately I don’t know what it feels like to be traded. So..you’re right. We’re NOT on the same level.”
-Draymond tonight prolly
Lol I thought this was a real response, nice job
Draymond gonna talk himself right out of prob the best NBA commentator job ever.
Please!! I can’t believe we might have to see this dude after he retires.
Only if we’re lucky
Thank fuck
Can even read it to his voice
“Chuck, you and I averaged the same amount of rebounds in high school and I say high school cause that’s when you were at your best.”
These are so good
Well done.
i was about to respond super spicy… lmao
and its not remotely close
Braymond for sure will take this well…
This is s one of those rare situations where you could say “and it’s not even close” and be 100% correct
Draymond’s gonna pull a Klay and hold up the 4
Houston Barkley > Best Season Career of Draymond
Everything that has been said about Draymond recently is true.
Good response
I mean did draymond even say he was better
He implied he was currently better than Barkley on the Rockets
I felt like he was just being snarky shaq has said much worse honestly feel it’s overblown
Shaq and Barkley have a relationship that allows that kinda trash talk… Also Shaq and Barkley are both all time greats, Draymond isn’t.
Yeah but Dray was filling in for shaq on the show where they both go at each other all the timee probably felt like he had to reciprocate some of that energy lol
That’s not really how that works… The new guy doesn’t just get the same level of familiarity.
Drays been on the show multiple times him and chuck always go at it
Honestly this whole thing would be a nothingburger if it weren’t Draymond. All of this buzz is just going to make ESPN want him more to replace Chuck when he retires
Shaq has earned the right to say the things he says, and he also makes fun of himself occasionally.
Draymond has done nothing to be able to talk the way he does.
I don’t think that’s at all what he was saying.
He was just saying he doesn’t want the fans to watch a once great player deteriorate to father time.
He’s not saying he’s better than Barkley. Just that if he was Barkley he would have preferred to retire before his final Rockets seasons when his age and injuries got the best of him.
Draymond talks like he was the first option on his team and it’s wild.
I feel like people think of Chuck as the funny fat guy on TV, instead of a former MVP
Well, those under 25 maybe.
Is that supposed to a controversial statement?
Draymond is becoming overrated. His season where Steph and Klay got hurt and he led them to the worst record in the nba while having one of the worst stat lines I’ve ever seen was disgraceful.
This implies that he views “big ol women in San Antonio” as more worthy adversaries than Draymond Green.
NBA loving this engagement
Draymond should’ve taken this lesson when he was going back and forth with Rivers.
I don’t really like either of these guys but Charles is 100% correct
We probably would never have had to deal with donkey Draymond if he had been drafted by the Charlotte hornets. He is so fucking lucky that he ended up where he was and that Steve Kerr became the coach of that team
Great career - good role player
Barkley is a top 25 player ALL TIME
Not. Close.
So is everyone on that team. Curry was a disappointing injury risk before the team popped off. Put him in Charlotte and he’s probably like his father. There was debate if his first extension was an overpay. Folks were thinking GS messed up keeping him over Monta Ellis.
Dray runs his mouth and he’s not as good as Barkley was at his peak obviously, but it’s ridiculous how some folks try to downplay his career.
Oh I’m with you there buddy. I think everybody on the Golden State teams is a little overrated. The team was great. The individual pieces are somewhere between great to good
Steph is the greatest shooter ever - He is not in the top five discussion and never will be - without question HoFer unanimous first time
Klay - really good Hall of Fame two-way player but again because of the team’s success his individual stats aren’t that impressive
Draymond - Right place right time
KD - without him they have two rings and Steph has one finals MVP and his other title Is due to massive injuries on the cavs because he basically played the goat and the super scrubs
I actually want to give Steve Kerr a lot more credit than he probably gets. Mark Jackson had that team playing well. Steve Kerr is what took them over the top, well that and assembling a team in 2017 That never should have lost a game
Shoot what did dray say this time?
we all know draymond going to piggy back curry’s retirement tour
Draymond is definitely a great defensive player but he’s always had glaring faults as a player, never did improve the shot, matter of fact he has gotten worse over the years in that regard, trash around the basket, literally can’t fucking put the ball through the hoop to save his life at this point.
And is toxic as fuck. I can’t imagine Steph actually likes being around Draymond. Lmfao I can’t imagine anybody likes being around Draymond. Dude got clowned harder than any NBA player I’ve ever seen when Steph missed that year. Dude was pathetic out there trying to do anything without the real all-timer out there doing championship things for him.
Harden/Barkley these types of non-championship players are so much higher up in levels compared to fucking Draymond. Come on now.
We’re all with Chuck.
I hate both of these assholes but Barkley always punches down, thats like his entire gimmick
Draymond will not be happy that’s for sure
Fk Draymond for making me agree with Charles Barkley
When Barkley trash talks someone’s career, everybody thinks it’s funny. When Draymond talks trash back, I guess it’s disrespectful and insecure.
Funny how just being more charismatic makes people turn a blind eye to what you say.
Why is this such a big deal? Watching this live, I didn’t think much of it much other than light banter/trash talk with a guy like Green who’s obviously gonna be confident in himself as a player and his legacy. He’s obviously in over head but it’s not that deep lmao
Chuck: “If he (Draymond) was an active player he wouldn’t be here.”
It’s a shame we’re gonna have to listen to Draymond yap for the next 30 years on TV after he retires from playing. Morons get ratings from other morons unfortunately.
He wasn’t even good on air. He just brings drama and has no chemistry. He is used to rambling on his podcast and it leads to awkward moments where everyone is just sitting and waiting on him to complete his thought.
I wonder where draymond sees himself ass a player
There’s levels even when talking about being washed.
charles is a bus driver.
draymond is the gum that kids stick on the back of the seats
Does this mean KD is on a level above him?
Say it again, Chuck
Well we know that Draymond knows how to punch down that’s for sure
draymond on form this week, first rivers, now Barkley who next?
Wait what happened? Weren’t they just on ESPN together?
real ones know
Draymond’s time in media will be short lived I hope, he’s so unlikable and literally riding the coattails of multiple hall of famers.
Not even on the same planet. There is no team that Draymond leads to the finals, at any point of his career.
Bus driver, bus rider.
What did draymond say before this response?
Saying you don’t need to respond to somebody’s criticism because you “never punch down” is honestly a really sick burn
My brother in Christ draymond how can you peak at a debatable third option of a playoff team, assuredly fourth of fifth option for many of those years, and still deadass look in the camera and say with conviction that you are a Charles Barkley.
All Barkley and all Bite
Edit: to those down voting me, im agreeing with Barkley lmao
Save it for the off-season
GUARANTEE if Draymond wasn’t already in the TNT pipeline to (inexplicably) be a future analyst and/or Chuck replacement (laughable) that Chuck would have given him the Kendrick Perkins “get off me roach!!!” kinda treatment. he pulled his punches that night, and he’s pulling them today
as a Warriors fan, this is the Draymond Green “experience”… our team has already been eliminated about 2 weeks now and in that time he’s dumped on his HOF coach (who went out of his way to heap praise on him, mind you), gotten in a stupid beef with a former player who (in his role as an analyst) correctly and soberly told him he was bugging on his “Kerr held me back” nonsense, and now he’s hijacked another newscycle with this mess involving a guy who went toe to toe with PRIME JORDAN(!!!!)
the 2nd best player in the entire Warriors run (obviously KD trumps him during his brief stay) and i’d still happily ship him off to the Bumfuck Tigers TODAY cuz he’s more trouble than he’s worth. i’m lowkey happy he went at Chuck like that cuz the backlash he set off should finally convince the TNT/ESPN brass that he is NOT a beloved figure on or off the court, so this “the next Chuck” lane they’re trying to make happen for him, it ain’t happening
Hey, man, I never punch down.
Are you punching up?
You get older and hopefully, you gain some perspective in life.
For Barkley and MJ, I hope that egos truly get put aside bc it really seems like they had a genuine friendship and bond that few can understand given their backgrounds at the time.
At the end of the day, Father Time beats all regardless of rings and accolades and accomplishments.
Get over yourself and enjoy what you can while you can with those that matter the most.
The fact that people agree with Barkley’s statement just shows that the average NBA does not even remotely appreciate the importance of defense enough.
Draymond is great but he was never on barkelys level. Chuck is an all time great
> I never punch down
Bullshit. You just don’t want Draymond going in on you
draymond was more conducive to winning than barkley was
Rings, Chuck
Chuck is better than Draymond ever could imagine to be.
He’s also better than Shaq. But part of the fun of this show is seeing these old players take shots at each other. It’s not nearly as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. Chuck didn’t even seem to care in the moment and this video is pretty much him saying I don’t care now. Chuck is comfortable with his career and may even agree with Dray that he might have prefered to retire sooner.
cool, draymond was the defensive anchor of one of the most dominant dynasties ever
And yet he’d get absolutely embarrassed by prime Charles Barkley.
i never knew it was a 1on1 sport
Never said it was.
There’s bus drivers and bus riders.
Draymond is one of the best bus riders of all time.
He’s not the bus driver that Chuck was.
chucks bus never won, buddy
He literally won the MVP, made the finals.
Lots of players lost to Chicago in the early 90s
If Portland traded for him instead of Phoenix he probably does “win.”
The rings or lack there of is such a tired and lame take.
Chuck bus went to cancun each and every year of his career. Fuck that bus.
And he still can’t hold a candle to Barkley lol
4 rings are 4 rings
Do you think having more rings than someone makes them better?
no but i think it implies one player is more conducive to winning than the other
which is the case with draymond and barkley
Good to know that Micheal Cooper is more conducive to winning than both of these guys then 🤦🏿
