It’s easy to dunk on the Sixers for this, but no other team in a different city has to deal with having a massive metropolitan center less than 2 hours away.

A lot of people seem to either ignore or don’t realize that Philly is one of the poorest major cities. The 76ers had to price them higher because ppl would buy them up if they were cheaper just to resell especially in this economy.

I’d much rather the 76ers eat the cost and donate tickets to locals who will actually go.

I’d honestly be interested in seeing a study on why the Sixers get so much less attention & love than all other Philly sports teams. I know rabid Philly fans who go nuts for the Eagles, Flyers, & Phillies… but never want to talk basketball. And it doesn’t just feel like a winning bias.

Maybe I’m wrong, but a part of it feels like a race thing. The most racist Mfers I’ve ever met in my life were Philly suburb guys. I had a grown ass wealthy man from the Philly burbs ask me unprompted straight faced if I voted for “that N****r” after Obama won in 2008. New York is 8 times the size of Philly,
It’s not about the money. It’s that there’s so many of em and it’s a 90 min drive

It’s a few factors at play here & I don’t think “New Yorkers are rich” is the biggest factor.

- Philly is the closest city to NYC (you can even get there on public transit).

- Knicks tickets at MSG are simply preposterous & always have been.

- NYC is huge population wise compared to Philly so there’s so many more people.

- NJ is even closer to Philly and splits its fan bases between NY and Philly teams. NJ Knicks fans probably feel like an MSG game is as difficult to go to as a Sixers game & the Sixers games are cheaper.

- NYC (despite its depressing lack of rings) feels like more of a basketball town than Philly fan base wise.

I happen to agree. I’m a Knicks fan. Don’t get me wrong, i May go to Philly for the game but if I was a Philly fan I’d be annoyed.

I saw in another thread that if Philly was a borough it would be the 4th largest in New York. They are both “large markets” but people forget just how big NYC is. By metro pop its 4x the size of Philly. Its not that every New Yorker is rich its that there are more rich New Yorkers than rich Philadelphians, because there are just so many more New Yorkers to begin with.

Making prices affordable to your fans only works if you find a way to prevent scalpers from buying the tickets. That’s something the NBA and major sports leagues have not done. So affordable tickets only leads to bigger profits for scalpers.

This PR stunt at least means the tickets get into the hands of locals who likely wouldn’t be able to afford to go.

Yeah, same shit happens with our fanbase whenever the Raptors play the Pistons, at least historically. Hell, it was even reasonably common for Raps fans to turn out in Portland whenever they played the Blazers for a while, and it’ll probably happen with the New Sonics too. When you’ve got a big fanbase largely centered in one or maybe a few rich metro areas, this shit happens regardless.
