They need to go farther. There needs to be a special committee that reviews games after the fact. They are empowered to issue special flopping technical after the game, regardless of how it was called in-game.
First 3 of these = 1 game suspension. Next 3 = 2 game suspension. Next 3 = 3 game suspension.
This would not be hard to put in place. The precedent for reviewing calls after the game to make modifications (i.e. flagrant upgrades/downgrades) is already in place.
If they wanted to address the flopping plague, they would do this.

Calling the foul might be easier than increasing the penalty for the foul you think is not being called. Not apologizing for anything. It’s just a silly idea to think they are going to make something worse if they’re not calling it already.
(A) They do that already with flagrant fouls (i.e. changing the ruling after the fact).
(B) It can be very hard in the moment to determine what is or isn’t a flop. It would slow the game down too much to do huge reviews of 10 potential flopping plays a game.
It would be trivially easy to implement a “flop review committee” to assess this. Give it teeth, and it would have a meaningful impact.

lol Marcus smart absolutely did not usher in the age of flopping. There were certainly a myriad of players flopping over the course of the last 30 years, not just the 2010s.
It’s always been a thing and will continue to be. If anything Marcus has his reputation because he could be a bit conspicuous about it at times.
I feel like it was already a problem with guys like Vlade Divac, Derek Fisher, and Manu Ginobli in the 2000’s (among others).
Where it started getting REALLY annoying for me was when players started flopping badly on offense. Like purposely hooking the defenders arms while driving to the basket, and then immediately go for a shot attempt while throwing their head back at the point of contact.
It was Ginobili I think who really pushed forward the offensive flop game, that head snap move started with him.
