During yesterday’s Spurs-Wolves, the Jackals, the section of fans created by Wemby and modeled after ultras from European soccer, waved a giant tifo during tip-off
Between this and the Clippers’ wall, I think the NBA is headed in the right direction for fans really turning it up. And like other people have said, they take it down to watch the game.
I hope the other teams and sports catch on. It’s so cool!

It’s a little cringe, sure, but it has done a lot to build a culture as a Clipper fan. And it’s a cool thing that our fans are really excited about. Beats the hell out of a dead ass arena like when I was a kid

It’s up to the club to embrace it. Portland has one of the biggest groups in MLS with the Timbers Army, and it’s an amazing experience, but part of why they’re so successful is the team’s integration with the community (especially the grassroots passionate kind who like to demonstrate in Portland) and embracing of that culture. The NBA is way too corporate these days to have a legitimate Ultras movement.
“Ultras”, as they’re called, is a huge thing in European football.
It does feel a little corporate but it’s definitely miles better than what they had.

I did the wall pass route instead of season tickets last season and it’s $495 a year, and you get to go to every single game.
On the flip side the Rockets have one of the weakest lower bowl crowds in all of sports. It’s kind of embarrassing.
Judging how much crime and violence happening because of the “utras” in Italy I don’t think you want to open the same can of worms. Especially when any random dude can carry a gun.
I like that you think there’s no metal detectors or security to enter the stadium lol even without the “utras” there’s still violence and it gets handled quickly.

Ok but if it happens outside, it’s going to happen regardless if there’s a section where fans wave a banner around. There’s 30 teams x 82 games, and violence still happens regardless of having special sections. Plus, those tickets are expensive compared to the Italy games, the people there are more sophisticated and probably wouldn’t start shooting inside the arena to kill someone?
Edit: Plus YOU said crime and violence inside the arena, then implied people will have guns. So that’s why I mentioned you pass through a metal detector to get inside the arena.
U.S fans don’t travel the same way ultras do, distances between teams here are much larger and there’s no regional transit to facilitate drunken away days.

The Wall is all Clippers gear and they get really into games, Spurs got their own section going. I’m sorry, I personally don’t like the quiet arenas, it’s nice for fans to have their section to go crazy. But I get it, you probably just wanna sit and watch the game and not have someone screaming the entire time, which is why I think it’s good their in special sections.

Attending games is a huge priority for me, and my biggest hobby, Lakers are for a tax bracket I’m not a part of. Sad for Laker fans, and it’s a bummer to see a similar thing happening with the Dodgers as they keep winning

One of the worst parts of modern NBA is the arena experience becoming a mindless clown and circus show, with people getting more hyped for tshirt tosses, and free chicken sandwiches then the actual game. Add on top of that the horrible music and chants blasting non stop during the game.
It is refreshing to see some actual soul and life brought into the arena.
I mean during the regular season most of the teams are tanking so t shirt tosses are more entertaining

The Viking didn’t invent the clapping. They took it from European soccer where it was popularized by the Iceland national team and their fans at the 2016 Euro cup, who themselves had been inspired by fans of a Scottish soccer club during a game against an Icelandic team in 2014.
The French national basketball team has been doing the clapping for years, including the drum after victories (using the drum from the official fan club that they carry to every game), and Wemby just imported it to the Spurs as part of the European fan atmosphere he’s been implementing this season.
And if we actually want to go the genesis of it, the clapping was invented in the 2000s by soccer fans of the Greek club of PAOK Thessaloniki and the Turkish club of Besiktas. Video here from 21 years ago.
