It’s human psychology. It applies at all levels once you’re past an income bracket.

I can easily relate to the concept. I grew up poor and worked my tail off early 20s after college even when I had low salary and some college debt. I was working to become financially sound. Once I crossed a certain income threshold, I had to look for new reasons and motivation to continue working as hard.

12 years later Currently at my job I’m well paid, but the compounding gains I get from my stock portfolio makes me way more money than whatever meager raise (if we even get raises) I’ll get. So now I just hit a baseline of what my job requires, do it well, and don’t have that extra motivation to work harder and go beyond for the company.

MPJ already has enough money to live his comfortable lifestyle for the rest of his life. He could start scoring 5ppg tomorrow and his guaranteed contract will still pay thru every cent. He won’t get another big deal but he probably already has enough to not worry about that.

Things like recognition, respect from fans/peers, and good basketball are probably what gets him more motivated on a day to day basis. Because the check’s guaranteed to come. And his lifestyle is guaranteed.

Well, for me I try to find motivation at my job by trying to work for ‘the next job.’ I switched roles to an adjacent one to the role I was on for a few years before. When it was clear that promotion wasn’t on the table, I took the opportunity to build some skills and experience in the adjacent role.

My motivation still isn’t all there. But when I ‘work for the next role’ that at least gives me a spark to really dig into the workstream or deliverable im building so that I finish it a bit wiser.

And then I just lean in on my hobbies and shit more. Remind myself that this is what I grinded for and that sometimes some stagnation isn’t the worse

Guys are motivated in contract years because every extra bit of effort has huge payoffs. But if you are in the middle of your contract, your motivated in other ways. If your team is good, winning and getting to the playoffs. If not, your own personal accolades and recognition. Some guys obviously just have that high degree of internal motivation but everything is a factor.

Outside of the NBA it’s basically the same, having a promotion dangled in front of you or seeking out that recognition for solid work are motivating. Your current paycheck isn’t because it’s the same if you put in 100% effort or 75% effort.

In the full video, MPJ describes how he can’t really be he #1 option on a team due to his injuries and how he had to change his play style. In this part, he’s discussing why sometimes as the #1 guy, he wouldn’t be able to put his foot on the gas to deliver the win.
