Mavs head coach Jason Kidd tried to become Mavericks’ president but he has known for months that he wouldn’t get the job, according to Tim MacMahon.

Jason Kidd was not involved in the search process that resulted in the hiring of Masai Ujiri. Ujiri said on Tuesday that he will meet with Kidd soon to decide his future.

They said that because they are not on AD’s timeline, maybe it is worth considering keeping Kidd as a developmental coach. To develop their players who are younger, in need of development, and not AD.

Jason Kidd is not a bad NBA coach. In fact I’d consider him top 10 because he did quite a bit and overachieved with the garbage rosters that were around Luka when he was still there.

The only rationale to get rid of him is because Masai wants to clean house completely and install a younger coach to develop and grow with the team and Cooper.

Why though? They aren’t realistically going to compete for a championship and they have a future superstar to build around. Seems like the best move for the franchise is to blow it up and build for the future, in which case you want a coach that’s good at developing players more than one that’s tactically good at winning games.

I think Jkidd did well with Cooper and at least in the playoffs he is a really good coach. But he will for sure starting scheming after this. Maybe Masai should look for different coach despite Cooper and his family clearly respecting Kidd a lot.
