I imagine a lot of ball handlers vote based on who they view as the best 1:1 defenders at the point of attack. I think in isolation it’s not unreasonable to view those guys as among the best defenders, but in the current NBA those guys will never be as impactful as rim defenders because teams just force switches to preferred matchups.

Gobert is an incredible overall defensive player, but 1:1 I imagine a lot of ball handlers would prefer having him than those other names.

Where in reality the numbers always show that being a giant human being is by far the most important part of defense, stopping shots at the rim or keeping offense away from the rim so that your wing defenders can commit to hard perimeter defense. Rudy, chet, wemby just by being enormous do that on top of being very good at what they do and are more important defenders than like most of these wings put together

People have short memories and they both had pretty tough seasons. Unfortunately, I think AD’s window has passed. I’m obviously biased but I think he should have won it in 2020.

i think this just shows that players value perimeter defense more considering that there’s only 2 centers on this entire list.

More like Wemby got all the votes from those who consider rim protection important but there is no clear best perimeter defender.

I am not a player but my take is that other than maybe Caruso, none of their individual guys would be my pick for best at their role, but basically all of their players are like top 3 in their role.

It does make some sense. Dort, Caruso, and Cason are all great POA defenders, but the Thunders main strength is in how well the whole team communicates and works together. I think a lot of guys after games think “man every guy on the Thunder made my life difficult” which is less memorable than “Wemby blocked a lot of my shots“ or “every time Kris Dunn was on me he made me work”.

Two things can be true at once

Have to put Rudy over Chet based on strength alone. He’s amazing in help, but will often get bumped out of position on ball.

I don’t know how many more times he’ll have to do that, though. In addition to his regular season accolades, he did this in the Lakers series (those folks went from saying that Luka would play Rudy off the court to saying that the Lakers lost because they didn’t have a center REAL fast), he did it again in the closing game against the Warriors, he did it to Jokic last round, and he’s doing it to Wemby now. 

I know you don’t mean any harm, it’s just become evident that there’s no body of work Rudy can produce that will make him not a punchline.

One of them is probably Donovan Mitchell. Dort absolutely locks Mitchell down every single time they play, I don’t think he’s ever once looked like a good player when Dort is guarding him.
