He’s divisive. We had to trade basically everyone on the team because he didn’t want to wait until the offseason to sign as a FA. And, despite the scoring numbers, he really fell off a cliff in like year 4 after he hurt his knee and was never the same but he didn’t recognize that. But, he scored a lot of points and was the face of the franchise for the only success we had since 2001.

But it does, doesn’t it? Melo was loved because he was a hooper but the team certainly didn’t enjoy much success with him there and that was a huge narrative for him during his tenure with the team. Brunson went to a ECF in year two and now has a wide open East to lead into a finals appearance this year.

Melo was not nearly as widely loved. Every team loves their star to an extent but he was clearly never as good as Brunson and has a grating personality so you won’t find as many hard riders

Brunson is just more universally beloved, and has already done more for the franchise than Melo could in less time to boot

That team still holds the most special place in my heart (with room to be defeated) but Brunson is my #1 guy. I trust him far more than I did Patrick in the playoffs.

Brunson might be one of the most underrated players relative to his production
It feels like most of the time his name comes up here all everyone talks about is how he’s too small but at the same time there are probably like only 4 or 5 guys who produce better offensively than he does in the playoffs
Sometimes he gets to helio guard happy and spends to much time dribbling the ball on isos that stall the offense. But outside of a select few names like Shai or Luka, he always shows up in playoffs.
One of the few cases where a small guards offense in a playoff setting outweighs the mismatch hunting
Yeah, hero ball Brunson can become an issue, but hopefully he worked that out of his system in the Hawks series. Brown finally has run a lot of the offense through KAT in these most recent games, which makes things more balanced.

EDIT: Decided to rewatch all his FGA instead of just giving the above snarky reply. Brunson had 4-5 buckets with Dyson guarding him, as he did have NAW/Gabe on him for most of the game. Definitely cooked Dyson a couple of times though… one of the buckets was OO failing to switch, one was an offensive board put back, and 2-3 were him actually beating Dyson 1on1 and no one helped by design.
