Just a couple things I noticed from briefly perfusing. They define a run as a change in points by nine within the preceding two minutes. This is an extremely arbitrary score and time frame. They say that they did not account for any substitutions made during timeouts. Their outcome is no significant gain in “short-term performance”, but they never define what “short-term” means from what I can see. What about “long-term” performance improvements?

Too much noise to actually mean anything. There are other things I don’t see how it’s possible to account for such as calming the crowd down or settling your team down.

I also think these mathematical papers just don’t translate very well. The “hot hand” is apparently not a thing, but anybody who’s played can tell you that it definitely is. Sometimes you just feel like you can’t hit the broadside of a barn, other times the basket feels like an ocean and you can’t miss. It’s hard to account for these more subjective experiences

This is dumb af. Statisticians seem to have a widespread problem with the Dunning Kruger effect. It’s like they think that just because you can measure something numerically, that means you can scientifically determine its natural probability, all real world variables and context be damned. I felt like I was arguing with a Trump supporter when I tried to explain to my stats professor during the “hot hand is a myth” lecture that shooting a basketball and rolling 7s aren’t the same thing. Well, turns out calling a timeout during a run in the NBA is actually very important, but the results may vary depending on the coach and players on either team, whether they’re home or away, whether the coach calling TO communicated a tactical adjustment to his players or was just hoping to cool down the home crowd, whether or not the other team had a tactical counter ready to go, whether the team on the run had players with a persistent hot hand vs. a brief hot hand, maybe a lineup mismatch? Nope.

The hot take would be lakers winning one game this series.

Think his very most recent timeout was exactly opposite of what you are calling it out for.
We had nice lead, opponents reclaimed some points while we messed up a 2-3 possessions with poor execution and turnovers, we still have decent lead, then JJ calls TO frustrated at our play.
