Masai’s greatest gift is his humanity. The way he sees his players as more than assets is what makes the culture so good, but it can also go sideways when he’s too attached to them. All of the moves he made were to give the pascal, fvv, og, nurse core as many shots as possible before blowing it up.

I think the Demar trade impacted Masai a lot more than it seemed from the outside. A lot of people were praising the move as ruthless efficiency on the way to the title but in interviews long afterwards Masai was literally in tears about how it went down. It really seemed to shift how he and as a result the Raptors organization approached trades. Objectively we held onto FVV, OG and Pascal too long but I feel like Masai really cared about them enough to not have another repeat of what happened with Demar.

I understand there was some strategic misalignment with ownership, but even tactically, there were bad blunders:

traded a top 8 pick for Poeltl, lost the pick, then gave Poeltl a disgusting extension that’s immediately one of the worst contracts in the league
lost FVV for nothing
traded OG for Quickley and gave him another nasty contract

Ultimately being better than Nico is a low bar, but I was hoping for some fresh blood and a new perspective than someone whose best years are clearly behind him.

Not only was Masai a great GM, he was a great person. We have a lot of footage of him interacting with players, staff, the community, and he’s always been gracious and warm.
