I know most people are gonna go nuts for this and on one level they should because he will be for sure better than what they had, but he lowkey had some really bizarre years after that championship. There were stories where GMs literally couldn’t believe how over inflated his views of his own players were in terms of trade proposals. Like, people actually questioned whether he was screwing with them.

Been watching this team since I was a little kid, I don’t think how they mishandled Masai will ever heal. This franchise was a shitshow before he showed up and anyone who wants to pretend otherwise is out to lunch. You can say this or that about some mistakes that were made after the championship, but we went from the laughing stock of the league that nobody wanted to play for to a team with terrific player development and a continuous goal for winning. We had continuous success from 2013 until 2019 when the championship happened.

Firing Masai like that was and still is inexcusable. Fuck Ed Rogers.

It’s not ownership stake. Every team appoints someone to represent it at the league’s board of governors meetings. Masai being appointed as an alternate means he can go represent the Mavericks at those meetings in the event that Patrick Dumont does not go. It’s certainly a big honor and vote of confidence but it’s not ownership.

While many (most?) of the NBA’s alternate governors do have some sort of ownership stake in their respective teams, ownership isn’t necessary to be an alternate governor.

Assigning somebody as an alternate governor of your NBA team is a lot like hiring an attorney to make court filings on your behalf. When the Adelsons are unable/unwilling to attend NBA owners meetings, Masai will be doing it.

As far as I can tell, there is nothing to suggest that Masai has an ownership stake in the Mavs. The Adelsons are just delegating some tasks to Masai. Presumably, the Adelsons did this because they: 1) Realized that they don’t know shit about fuck about basketball; and/or 2) Don’t yet know how to navigate NBA politics.

Dude, I grew up watching the mavs especially the nash years. I have been feeling awful for Mavs fans ever since Doncic left. If I was a star player, especially from europe looking in at that mess, I would consider the Doncic move as losing their privileges to sign me. And I hate it. I don’t want it to be that way but If I was Giannis I would stay clear just based on the principle of ethics.

I think he lost a lot of shine after the chip. He unquestionably made a lot of great moves over his full tenure, but there never seemed to be any bigger strategy to his team-building. We were a real contender for like one year out of 12, all thanks to the Kawhi trade.

Big respect to him but curious to see if he can get the Mavs to contender status. Should be easier considering he’s starting with the most important piece, which was never the case here.

I thought the opinion was split when he left Toronto. Surprised to see such overwhelming adulation, but perhaps that’s because it’s a name. 

He was great until we won the championship then he refused to move on and squandered every top tier asset we had and made some extremely puzzling moves like the Poeltl trade and extension.

I think he’s an above average GM but he’s got his flaws, and his reputation as some kind of genius has meant he’s gotten a bit high on the smell of his farts over the past few years.
