Tatum gets a million times more hate too and gets the burden of the criticism when the Celtics fall short. That’s not to say JB hasn’t been criticized heavily in the past (2023 especially) but Tatum absorbs the brunt of it even when he doesn’t deserve it.
Well, people got to see how much of a difference maker Tatum is when he is not there and Boston has no idea how to play proper coordinated offense beyond hoping that the 3-point shooting will be there.

That is not the attitude you should expect from a previous champion and someone who carries himself as “one of the best.” He was not the difference maker, and the 3s were not falling, and neither Mazzulla, White, nor JB did anything about it. They lived through a gambler mentality with that 3-point shooting, something that likely would not have happened that atrociously if Tatum had been there.
So yeah… Tatum’s ceiling and expectations were always higher, but I do not think many people have anything against him after the championship run, other than maybe him being a bit corny. Still, without him Boston is not even a contender. Either he comes back, or the coaching staff has to change…. and boy do Boston need a competent/healthy big man. Embiid was feasting….
Tatum is def THE difference maker on the Celtics team, but the live and die by 3 approach has been a constant since Mazzulla took over, even when Tatum was available.

The more charitable way would be that this the first season of his prime he got to play free of championship expectation, and quote unquote proved himself to the point where he felt vindicated in his work.
The title runs likely were stressful as hell. Even accounting for the push this year, it probably felt like playing with house money.
There’s no need to give him grace, but we don’t have to jump off the deep end. I think it’s perfectly understandable and human as to why he would have found joy in this season.

Last year was far worse, losing to the knicks and having tatum get injured was worse.
Going back to Brad Stevens, those playoffs with the Jays were horrendous. We constantly were a talented team that did nothing.

Fans want to think that all players are 100% focused on winning titles because that matches the fan’s goals but that’s not true. It’s more common for players to want to be focal point of a good team (like Brown without Tatum) than a piece of a title winner (even though Brown won finals mvp it’s reasonable to consider Tatum as the best player on that team). Like being the main reason the team is good is what many players want to be.
