Nah, play every team four times, twice at home and twice on the road. That’s 108 games, so you could have the season run from Labor Day to Memorial Day (about 260 days between) with teams playing every other day (with some additional rest/travel days in there).

3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an OT win, 1 point for an OT loss, and 0 points for a regulation loss. Point differential is the tie breaker in case of point ties.

Sounds like a great idea, surely no one would say we have too many basketball games, right? Certainly people aren’t going to ask for less basketball because they prefer to look at stat sheets and argue on the internet with strangers, right?

People in this sub hate watching games before the finals. Every suggestion is to cut games.

To be honest I would, but not specifically in this way. I think for sure get rid of the stupid play in, but honestly then I think my ideal would be six teams per conference making playoffs. I know this would never actually happen though, so would be happy with the current playoffs but no play in.

If you did cut it to twelve total teams though, of course there are less playoff games, but the regular season would actually matter. The top teams would all be fighting for byes and the top ~10 per conference fighting for playoffs. (Tanking below that would become way worse though admittedly). Right now no one really watches the regular season because a team can be like ten games under 500 and make the play in. But I think it’d be nice to sacrifice some playoff games but make the 82 games in the regular season matter more. 

And one year where there are good game sevens where even a seven seed wins one, I don’t think makes up for statistically the winning team basically always being a top seed. It’s recency bias to point out a few good games like that makes all the downsides worth it. 

Edit: I guess my overall point is I absolutely don’t think you should cut down games because the same team will win anyways every time. But I think you should cut them down to make the remaining games matter a lot more (plus like 90% of the time you’d probably still get the same eventual Champion).

I’ve come to like it. The league has enough parity nowadays that the 5-8 seeds aren’t complete pushovers.

I think there’s been more upsets in the first round in the last 5 years than when there were a 5 game series.

maybe? WNBA currently does best of 5. It works for their league, especially given the different conditioning considerations, but I still prefer getting to see more ball and the additional effort required.

& actually, there are some WNBA fans that talk about wanting to see extended series. I wouldn’t necessarily expect it to happen (at leaast anytime soon), but it does speak to fans desire to see top teams match up for an extra game or two.

Depends on the NBAs profit from a playoff game vs regular season. Do they lose less money cutting multiple regular season games or cutting playoff games that could or could not exist depending on the length of the series

It has significantly less variance than baseball and hockey lol Those are not even in the same stratosphere. In basketball, the biggest swing that can happen in one play is like…one team misses a three and another team hits it. That’s a 6 point swing out of 230+ points on average. A goal in hockey is worth 1 “point” out of an average of around 7 per game, and a run in baseball is worth 1 “point” out of an average of around 8 per game. A hockey team can get completely outplayed and get outshot like 40-15 and win if their goalie plays like jesus christ. In baseball, if there’s bases loaded 2 outs for example (something that happens pretty frequently), you can score anywhere between 0-4 runs based on one swing and a variety of other factors such as temperature, wind, fielding errors, pitch location, bad bounces, fan interference, stadium dimensions etc. To put it in context, it has been estimated that you would need to play a bo75 in the MLB in order to match the amount of variance in a bo7 NBA series.

NFL is also less variance because of the amount of points scored, but it also has a lot less of it than MLB / NHL.

I’m saying the playoffs is when you’d like to see the best players play every game. And making it a best of 5 makes it more suspenseful and prevents guys from getting injured before the next round.

Is it great this season we got lots of game 7s? Absolutely. But it’s also an outlier and mainly due to the East being mid af this season.

Making the first round a best of 5 discourages tanking as well. A team is more likely to believe they can make a deep run if they only need to win 3 games instead of 4 and will try to make the play-in instead of tanking.

NBA doesn’t let people go past another round after “one game” lol. Say what you want, but actual champions are crowned in the NBA,not no mf’ing blue October bs like KS royals or like I said Super Bowl champs 15% being wild card, like wtf?

Barring injury, basketball is by far the most predictable sport. The reason people aren’t millionaires from betting is because favorites don’t win money like upsets do.

It’s perfectly fine to have different opinions.

Parity comes from less game in each series not more games.

More games just mean a team that can survive all the injuries or lack of injuries will win more often.

Look at all the injuries we have seen over the years, and how it cheapens the playoffs entirely. Look at what happened to the Rockets, Celtics, Magic, and now the Raptors tonight as they lose key players in major part because of the workload. More isn’t always better, look at the drop of quality in the NFL ever since they went to 17 games and expanded Thursday Night Football.

I strongly disagree, I want quality basketball, not quantity basketball.
