The song is âNa Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbyeâ by a fake band called Steam (1969). The origin is genuinely wild:
Three guys from a failed doo-wop group had an unfinished song from the early â60s sitting in a drawer. In 1969, one of them (Gary DeCarlo) was trying to launch a solo career at Mercury Records and needed a throwaway B-side. They dusted off the old song, recorded it in one night without even a real band â just spliced-together drum tracks from other sessions.
The âna na na naâ chorus? The producer literally had no lyrics, so he just started humming filler at the piano. His words: âEverything was âna naâ when you didnât have a lyric.â His buddy added âhey hey.â That was it.
They were so embarrassed by it they released it under a fake band name â Steam â to hide their identities. Mercury then sent out a completely different group of random musicians to tour and lip-sync as âSteamâ on TV.
It accidentally hit #1, knocking the Beatles off the top spot.
Then it sat dormant for nearly a decade until a Chicago White Sox organist started playing it in 1977 whenever the opposing pitcher got pulled. Crowd sang along. Sports history was made.

This song was for side B. It was never meant to be a hit.
Not only that, the “nananana, hey, hey, goodbye” was a filler, as they got the music, but failed to find any fitting lyrics for this part of the song, so it wasn’t even planned to be there.
Another twist, the guy who sang the original song was working with another music label, so he couldn’t take credit for his own song (you couldn’t work for two labels at the same time).
Gary DeCarlo is the singer and co-writer of the 1969 hit “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”.
Despite the song selling nearly 8 million copies (a massive hit) and becoming a global stadium anthem, DeCarlo did not make significant money from it, as he was not properly credited initially and the record company used a fake band, Steam, to perform it.
